MMD releases have facial expressions already (called Shape Keys in Blender), the same expressions they use in the music videos naturally so it could be limited but they definitely have the most common ones. The Megatutorial is the best one so far, it tells you all you need to know, I had started editing the model on my own and took me a week to do what I did even better in just 40 minutes following Tupper's advice.

You can add poses to MMD files, before importing to Blender, it should be much faster. Otherwise, in Blender you've to use Shape Keys and Vertex Groups, it's not hard but just really, really time consuming.

Select/download a better shader or experiment with the settings of the ones that are already there.
If you want to use a different shader than the rest of the body you will need to have the top use its own texture. Most of the time these textures are already seperated, unless you use CATS for texture atlasing for example.

That's definitely because of the wrong encoding, though it usually disappears after changing the language like you did. What windows version are you running? I'm on windows 7 64-bit even if it looks like 8 (just a custom theme) and it worked fine, all characters are in japanese. I used "Extract Here" of WinRAR 5.40 (64-bit) for extracting the archive, then just imported with CATS the PMX file with the shorter name (the second one is for testing it seems), also Blender's settings under System have "International Fonts" enabled (japanese chars appear as squares in Blender otherwise).

By the way, I use Blender v2.79 Portable, it shouldn't make any difference but make sure your version is updated, because older versions may not work well with MMD Tools/CATS and also I personally found some annoying bugs that were fixed when I updated to v.2.79 (mostly related to Modifiers). What's the best way to do dynamic bone collision on long skirts like this? I put small colliders on the knee bones to see if it would work, but it still clips through her legs when I move the model in Unity.

I think the servers + the fact that the hub is the room everyone loads into when they log in by default with their custom avatars
those two things combined probably fuck it up a lot, I think it might be trying to connect you to a "full" hub and there's no way for it to connect you to another room on it's own so it just loadscreen loops until someone leaves

Your CPU is the problem. VRChat is CPU-throttled by all the morons with 50 draw calls and 500 dynamic bones on their avatars.

How demanding are the dynamic bone colliders? I just added 4 in total, one for each hand so I can play with the hair and one on both legs to avoid skirt clipping.

A unit in unity is 1 meter. You can usually find the official height of an character with fan wikias. If you cant find it, look up something like "Average Height of Japanese Girls" or something

Add an avatar descriptor to your character. Convert the official height in meters if necessary, then set that value to be the Y coordinate of the little ball thing in the avatar descriptor.

Scale your character down until the ball lines up with the top of the head. Make sure you scale the X,Y, and Z with the same value. Then move the ball down to reach your character's eye level, and move in the Z axis to bring the ball closer to the face
