Hey guys, I've got something I've been meaning to ask for a while now. I'm considering overtaking the huge project of re-building the missing skin mesh and texturing it so that I have a base to extrude any new clothes out of... Or just frankensteining parts from other models to build what's missing (e.g. legs).
Also there's a problem that the model is no longer symmetric (left and right side has different vertices), so I'd like to fix that and redo the entire topology.
Looking at several days' work here since I've done none of that before.

What's visible in the pic is 21k tris. The hidden parts are counted into the previous picture's total triangle count at the top.
Every time I select a material while manual atlasing it opens its texture in the UV/image editor as well as selecting the vertices. This didn't happen when tupper did the exact same thing.

Sorry to disappoint, but it didn't work. I noticed the right leg is part of the left leg vertex group by default, I knew it wasn't weighted so I just left it in the past but thought it might somehow be the cause any way with trackers because the legs are always twisted the same way. Oh right, I forgot to post my own finding.
I fixed that just today, myself. It's actually very simple, and I'm surprised it went this long without someone figuring and it becoming common knowledge.
In the end all I did was a quick thing in Blender. Enter edit mode on the armature. On each of the lower legs and feet bones, checkmark "Connected" in the bone properties tab, then select the knee joint, and drag it slightly forward so the whole leg's bones aren't perfectly vertical. Keep it still inside the mesh, but around so that it touches the front of it.
That's it, no more twisty tie legs. And the connected checkbox part might not even be necessary. Tried on two models and both worked, even in populated worlds through lag spikes, loading screens and many avatar swaps.

this sounds like fixing by bending the knees in unity slightly out of tpose might fix it. Working in finalIK taught me that some IK systems get really confused if it cannot sense where a joint's bend angle is if the bones are super strait, just like the spin fix trick.

the DB script will sort compute order at startup, and then every update frame will LINEARLY do math on all the bones so operation is roughly O(n) at average case. Ways to stop some bones from being computed is maximizing rigidness and zero force for a bone (i think, been a while) as it it will escape solving that bone.
Performance is worse when each collider for a bone set will need to be linearly tested, so now its O(nm). There is more CPU time spent solving a set n*m of bones than a set of draw calls in a order of magnitude, pending draws are not multiplied by shadows and dynamic lights and such. Thus many bones and colliders are cancer to vrchat.

I've seen this happen with Unity devs before. They pin all their optimization hopes on the new version of Unity and let their game choke on a single core in 32-bit mode in the meantime. Then when they finally get updated to the new version, performance is worse, CPU utilization is still single-core, and there are about three times as many bugs.
The game is as optimized as it's going to be for at least a year, and we need to work within that to not destroy each others' experience.

Multicore support does not automatically make the game utilize all cores. Even a multithreaded program will be bottlenecked by the most demanding part of the program that must run sequentially, thus on a single core.
The game won't be optimized for multicore with a simple Unity upgrade. It needs further optimization within that upgrade, and Dynamic Bones needs a rewrite to at least split each script or avatar into multiple threads.

I suspect doing server-side limits like that means running some kind of rudimentary 3D renderer on the server, rather than just hosting some files. It's probably a huge deal to code up from scratch considering how most of the game is just glued-together Unity prefabs.

unity alone cant fix the issue. Because a large part of the problem isnt just unity but the game itself just not being optimized very well, because it's still built for the lower playercount it had before it became popular
people really underestimate just how big this game blew up thanks to that knuckles meme, and the streamers and youtubers that then followed, and how that snowballed into world creation, avatar creation, AND the playercount.

Honestly, making their own engine with a custom SDK would probably be the best option, but definitely the hardest. They probably need to hire some additional programmers, and not copy-paste guys, actual programmers.Forgot to hit post

Once the game goes to its peak then I can see what to do. Tbh I have a model with over 180 mats, about 8 meshes and over 20 dynamic bones (its the result of a project beween several people. It's currently being optimized) and the ammont of lag it causes is a lot lower (minimal 2 fps drop in a mirror. None in game) than a model I have with 34 mats, 1 mesh (34k poly) and 20 bones (over 15 fps drop with a mirror. 5fps in game). Its not their shadders either. Then there are those nobbies that atlas everything and forget to combine the meshes in their game, im more concerned about thise people).
There is also this guy that puts dynamic bone script values on every single bone on his hair and 5 to 10 colliders on his avatars Zero lag or frame drop with his avatars.
Like people complaining about the vrg desktop crashers. One of those famous tried to do it to me and the more they could do is give me a 45 sec loading time while most people died. Game was 100 percent normal after that. Still dont do that, crashing peoples pc is not fun. Won't commit to optimize 100% over a messy set of rules.
Also no point having a full set of fully optimized vrg members on a map that is laggy af. Some meeting places/maps are laggy and poorly optimized.
Im not encouraging people to don't put attention to optimization (Im just pushing the game limits to see how hard I can go on looks before performance is truly hit). Optimization is fully important, but currently the game as it is, is behaving differently on each of peoples PCs. I also respect the time and effort you guys put into optimizing avatars, but you are not the only ones that spend over 14 hours of work per avatar fixing broken stuff and adding cool shadders (or just trting to Atlas)
