If all goes well, an IMU-based setup will be a lot cheaper than pucks, around $120 BOM for 2 feet and waist IMUs + esp8266 for transmission. in theory it'll also work without facing a camera, unlike the kinect.

There are also some cheaper IMUs out there than this $35 one, but the BNO080 has a bunch of sensor fusion running chipside that--after reviewing material on how IMUs work--does sound like it's worth the extra $20 bux. While I appreciate what this varifocal shit can do, I don't like the idea of moving parts in expensive consumer electronics. You run into reliability issues with them; just look at the failure rate of first gen vive lighthouses. There's also the latency introduced by such a technology; can the lenses refocus faster than it takes my brain to register that what I'm looking at is out of focus? If not then every time you move your eyes, you're going to have a period of a few milliseconds where the display is not yet in focus relative to your new eye position. I'd much rather have a base model without this shit but with all the other features and leave this varifocal crap for a premium model.

I'm playing in near dark here.

When I play with Rift, the trackers just get offset immediately. So I'll be trying to t-pose into an avatar and my feet and hip are off to the right by about 10cm.

I also had trouble before launching VRChat where the 'universal' offset was wrong, meaning I had to set a new offset (translating the trackers in 3D space, didn't need to touch yaw) before I could jump in.

I don't understand either problem. I have the sync cable in and USB bandwidth shouldn't be a probem, as I have 3 Rift Sensors + Rift usually, working fine. There's nothing to reflect, so the trackers shouldn't be drifting at all, which they are doing even when I use Vive. On Rift, it's much worse, because they get offset for no reason and desync more easily.

None of this explains why my trackers get offset when playing with Rift, though. On Vive, they'll always return to their correct position in the end. The lighthouses can wash out the rift sensors (which would lose tracking for the rift HMD and touch controllers), but the trackers should still work in that situation. Strange that there's a difference between all vive and vive+rift, but such is the nature of computers.

Interestingly enough, after you've been in VR for a while, your brain gives up on trying to accommodate and foveate like in reality and just focuses on the (virtually) 2 meters away screen. That's one reason why it's probably bad for kids to use VR, since that accommodation-vergence might not be learned yet, screwing up their IRL vision for life.

If you've ever tried looking with one eye closed in a VR headset, especially at an object close to your face, the scale will feel off. In fact it may feel like you're looking at a huge giant object. With a varifocal display, this wouldn't be a problem anymore. Subtly, it may mean anywhere from a small increase to a huge increase in presence. We'll see.

"presence" has a lot of factors to it, and certainly varifocal displays will help. Eye tracking for foeveation should be good too, since that also subtly throws off the focus.

Besides varifocal, the "light field" displays are pretty interesting, e.g. apparently what magic leap is doing (if that doesn't end up being total vaporware) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwCwtBxZM7g Rather than using a single virtual screen that mechanically or optically moves around, you get a hologram-like simulated light field, so your eyes can just accommodate naturally. Presence is way deeper and more complex than most of us realize, and included in the complexity is the differences between individuals in which aspects of the experience matter or "weigh" more. Beyond the tech we have right now with most VR systems, personally I've found that accurate, although not necessarily precise tracking/reconstruction of the body including the clothing you're wearing, matters a lot, and without that full 3D body presence, there is a huge disparity between how real everything else in the experience felt. Lightfield displays are super interesting. I've actually tried the prototype in the second video you linked. It kind of worked. I'll say there are challenges to getting both a working and practical technology to display lightfields, but it is definitely very cool. It may not be needed if these varifocal displays get developed well enough, however. Again, we'll see. The difference between individuals is pretty vast, yeah. I've thankfully had zero issues with motion sickness, even moving around in vrchat with the thumbsticks, but some of my friends got immediate motion sickness just from zooming around in Google Earth VR.

Anxiety, depression, hyper focus and ADHD here. This is an amazing "game" but a double edged sword. It can give you amzing experiences, let you meet amazing people and make a lot of good memories. However this game has caused me 4 severe panic atacks in 5 months. When you feel happy its all good but when you get depressed and get ignored in game or something makes you sad you will feel way worse in VrChat than irl. I can keep my cool a lot better irl, but in vr if I colapse I crumble real hard.
Also sleeping in vr fixed my sleep. I went from sleeping 30 min to 2 hours a day until I would collapse randomly to 5 to 8 hours a day.
This game has good tools for you to overcome your anxiety, but it will never solve it for you as only you can bring yourself out of your personal problems. Good luck, Anon.

Even if the motherboard itself only has 6 usb ports on the back, you can usually get 2 more usb 3.0 ports and usb 2.0 ports from the 20 pin headers. Usually for the front ports in your case, but you can buy a generic 20 pin to usb a female adapter too.

It's probably best just to buy a pci-e expansion card though, since you'll also get more bandwidth to the processor than the on-board usb controller can provide.

Not necessarily. It's possible that other cues that induce presence will be or are enough, with future or current systems, to give that sense of presence, depending on the person. Of course there are also many things that actively decrease or destroy presence. I just found that at this stage of the technology, that accurate representation of my body helped me personally to feel like everything in VR was so much more solid and physical.
Besides, we can still display our own body in the first person view, while other people see our avatar.

Yes, I did attend SIGGRAPH. It's really quite fun to go to all these events, and I know I'm very lucky to have gotten the chance. It can definitely be a sink of money though, traveling around. Thankfully the entrance fees for me was null because I hooked myself up with a media outlet. Connections are important.
