alright so i have a question
i recently got a vive pro and while the general upgrades are hella nice ive started to run into some problems
first is that i get way more tracking hiccups than i did with the vive which i guess is cause of 1.0 lighthouses
second is big framerate issues - with the vive i got constant 90fps no problem at 2.0 supersampling but with the pro im getting huge frame drops and a lower stable fps in general
is it just a matter of it being too new? or is it more a computer problem (1080ti, 32gb ram, i7-6700k for reference)

You don't even need to split the texture to do that. Take your existing texture, floodfill solid black everything except the pupils, save it, and then go into the material in unity and set that second texture as the emission map. Chuuni eyes in less than a minute.

Because the dev team are retarded. The one number that matters is 65,535 because that's the largest number of polygons a single mesh can hold in unity. If you exceed that by even one, you'll create a whole new draw call which will actually affect performance.

Why don't fully body avatars blink using the vrc shape keys generated in blender? I presume eye tracking doesn't work because the IK doesn't include functional eye bones, but that shouldn't affect it. Do blinking animations added in unity work? I would just test it, but mirrors show blinking anyway.

The textures that GPUs use are uncompressed and must be in specific formats. When you import a texture to unity, Unity tells you the amount of VRAM that that texture will use in the GPU.

If you've never done one before, I recommend watching a "blender basics" tutorial that covers the regular UV unwrapping process, where they'll show you all the keyboard shortcuts and help you understand why things work the way they do.

That creates a mesh, not material.
To create a new material you go to the materials list on your mesh, press the + button to the right of the list, then in edit mode select the parts you want to go into it and click Assign. Then scroll down and select the texture on the MMD tools parts.

What's everyone's avatar specs looking like? I used to super optimize mats, but also had like 50 dynamic bones because I was a retard. Currently at 9 materials and ~25 dynamic bones on my main avatar. Cubed MMD shaders are a godsend

No, but the reason for that is probably because they don't want to plague PC VR with a headset that doesn't have positional tracking. Much of their software on PC wasn't designed for a 3 DOF headset. Mobile VR on the other hand has 3 DOF as the standard. They also don't want to overshadow the Rift in any way, which has a lower resolution and worse lenses. They could update the Rift maybe, but then that raises the price and also means their early customers are kind of getting betrayed because they said they wouldn't have mid-gen upgrade. Plus if they put PC compatibility in, the headset would probably need yet more internal components, it'd weigh more, and it'd be more expensive to make. They cut a lot of corners to make it both $200 and be a somewhat good mobile experience.
