The only real issue is that you have to reatlas the entire model every time you change anything this way. Also, select the new object first when joining meshes, and do not use the 'join meshes' button in CATS or the armature will no longer be linked to the vertices of anything.

The devs definitely turn a blind eye to the poly limit, and the actual performance impact of >20k trisis essentially zero. However, importing anything above 65534 tris will split the mesh in unity and generally make your life more difficult, so that's the practical limit.

I made 2 versions of this dummy model to try blender's default armature. Apparently if you don't map some fingers your head is just locked in the Z axis and you can't crouch at all. Aside from that it seems to work pretty damn well I can touch my chin and belly, positions are the same irl and in VR. Now when I map the fingers it just freaking shits the bed as you can see the elbows just go to jupiter and the shoulders/legs become scuffed
