What are optimal positioning for your sensors if you're a Rift user and in a confined play space, I've been experimenting with them but can't seem any 'sweet' spots I dig or ones where (at in least in VR Chat) don't shit themselves if I'm standing/sitting in a funky spot relative to where they're positioned. Or is the problem just inherent because said confined play space? Is USB factored into it, I only have so many 3.0 slots right now for my current build and I'm forced to use 2.0 for some of the cables.

The vive does have 110 degree fov while the rift only has 100. Also by easier fbt expansion they mean if you get the rift you are paying 100 dollars msrp more as well as setting up a grand total of 4-5 units to track everything rather than just 2 with the vive. I need some help with vive + rift fbt setup. I can't get my new trackers to show up in steamVR no matter what. I have my basestations set to B and C all green lights, I can turn on trackers and they have the blue light for about 10s before turning off. The device/pair controller can't find anything to pair, rebooting in developer settings doesn't help. I did the config changes. My USB dongle is plugged into the dongle cradle and that's plugged into USB 3.0.
The tracker manual says I need to do devices/pair tracker in steamVR but that doesn't even exist.
Anyone able to help me?

Head height or above, angled down at least 15 degrees below the horizontal. Don't look at the position of the kinect arrow, just adjust the rotation/position in k2v until the emulated trackers are right while you walk around the room, use the rift controllers to see if the trackers are steady. If you've got it at the wrong angle they will tend to rise or fall as you walk forward/backward in your playspace.

Standing dancing etc should be 100% fine, although check to see if the headset cable is hanging near your foot when you tpose because my cable has a habit of spinning the rotation of the foot tracker next to it. Squatting and kneeing are janky because they tend to occlude your feet/legs. Sitting is best done feet in front, either on chair or on floor, in that pose it should be 90% reliable. Crossed legs depends on where your foot trackers are on the avatar.. Lying down is a lottery not worth the trouble but if you get it working please share.

Tracking is best in a lit room, because while the kinect has a strong IR light source it mixes data from the second RGB camera for better tracking. I guess if you have high contrast clothing like stripped socks you should wear those to help it out.

I got the black friday thing that they were doing where you get the Deluxe Audio Strap for free but it didn't ship out with my headset.

I had to plug in those long ass cables to sync the lighthouses then switch one from a to b and then disable my phones Bluetooth and then enable vive bluetooth and oddly enough, realistic proportions helped so now it tracks almost all the time

I went for Vive so I can get cheaper and easier full body tracking (which I have now), I owned both Oculus and Vive (borrowed an oculus for a month) and I find the vive way more comfortable, even the sponge around it is higher quality than what oculus has on it. Of course I bought a deluxe audio strap which makes it really easy to put on and adjust.

If you want better build quality I'd go for the Vive. To me everything seems more premium about it, only thing that's missing is for Valve to release the Knuckles, but until that I'm ok with the vive controllers.

Did you change the settings json file in the steamVR dir to "requireHmd": false and "multipleDrivers": true? The guide in the OP has the exact settings for that. The trackers wont show up it all without that.

Also, sometimes just at random during updates it seems, you have to go edit the file again. it gets overwritten and and you have to change the same two settings.

Put an audio source in a game object
Create a new animation.
Drag the animation onto the audio souce or game object that its in.
Set the animation so the volume is at 1, the minimum distance is at like 5 and max distance is like 10. Or use whatever numbers you were trying to use.
Now for every audio source you create you can drag the same animation onto it and it will fix the nerfed audio.

From my experience with vive pucks + rift hmd and controllers, the tracking is about the same. It's not a huge gap, like the controllers. They both get super quick rotation updates from the IMU, and global registration from basestations/cameras works fine. lighthouse is a technically more elegant solution I think, but cameras tracking infrared LEDs is proven technology, and it makes the controllers themselves a lot more robust. Instead of infrared sensors and an expensive sensor-fusion ASIC, the rift controller is just an IMU + infrared LEDs. harder to break.

I thought this was fine on the rift. It's a knob that moves the lenses physically, so there's no software weirdness. you just adjust it until the calibration screen is as sharp as possible, that's it

And IMO it's an acceptable price to pay for the better headset at the moment. I mean, you already have to bend over to microsoft just to play VR games, so one more botnet is tolerable.

3D-printed plastic brackets + command strip is the optimal way to wall mount your Rift cameras, I am sure of it.
The brackets were cheap and are re-usable, the command strips are reliable and don't mark the walls. The ones I am using are double-sided velcro strips so that I can pull the brackets off and move them to other, pre-stuck, velcro strips if I need to but you absolutely could just use the regular strips to make it cheaper, they'd look better too as they'll be more flush to the wall.
I think this is ideal personally.

That being said you can buy aftermarker covers, like VRCover that do a better job.

I also kind of prefer this for the same reason. Oculus does sell IEMs that plug into the same headset audio, but for actual noise canceling you'll want to unscrew the built-in earphones and just use your own. I like my hd280s.

There is or was supposed to be licensing. Valve said so, but with that said, we don't know in reality how easy it is to license from them. They have said however that the Vive was created with a lot of work from HTC, so perhaps the WMR license includes less the manufacturer has to do themselves and that's why most chose that instead of SteamVR.

The LG headset was supposed to be an official licensed SteamVR headset, but who knows what happened to that project. It may still be in the plans.

In concept, yes, but to actually design, engineer, and manufacture a consumer headset that just werks is a much taller order. The displays need to come from somewhere, for example. It may not be that easy to find good displays that work well for VR, and it may not be that easy or cheap to "just" order a bunch from Samsung either. Then there is everything else including the optics, chips, audio, ergonomics, etc which are all things that aren't so easy to do no matter how easy you think it looks.

Turns out animations do work if the shapekey isn't used in any override. I guess having it an override forces it to keep the same value at all times while the override isn't active, but if you don't use it in anything, the animation is free to change it. Overrides also disrupt visemes in the same way.

Needless to say, VR requires proper electrical and internet service for a good experience, so you'll need utility companies for that.

This is the wrong use for cloth components or dynamic bones. Even if it looks right locally, dynamic bones/cloth on other people's clients can bug out, and leave your skirt flipped. Weight paint your skirt to your hips bones instead. It looks great, it looks the same for everyone globally, and most importantly it doesn't kill everyone's framerate.

Dynamic bones and cloth burns CPU cycles in this hopelessly CPU-bound game. Bones are still nice for hair and other wiggly bits, but it's not great for skirt clipping. The cheapest route to decent fullbody tracking is the Vive. $500 for the headset, $300 for a set of 3 trackers.
Rift gets you VR for $400, and for tracking you can use a Kinect (~$50 but it's really all over the place) or buy Vive lighthouses and trackers for another $600. Kinect tracking is pretty jank though.
The total poorfag option is a WMR headset, which can go for as low as $166 on sale, but they have issues with controller tracking and IPD, and there is no path to FBT from there.

Well, the cheapest way to get into VR is Windows Mixed Reality.
That being said, if you want to get full body eventually 100% go for the Vive, because if you get Rift (not sure if you can even get full body with Mixed Reality) then you'll end up shelling out 600$-800$ MORE just to get full body because you'd have to get the Vive lighthouses which are around 80$ x2 and the Vive pucks which are about 99$ x3.
So in the long run if you plan on getting full body Vive is cheaper.

WMR has fixed IPD and a head strap that only secures the headset from the top, so it's incredibly difficult to keep the sweet spot in view. This means the higher resolution of WMR sets is wasted as things look blurry most of the time anyway. On top of that, tracking is done by two front-facing visible light cameras. It seems to work well enough for the headset tracking as long as your framerate stays high, but as soon as your controllers move out of the camera field of view they lose tracking. This limits the games that are viable with it - a lot of fast action games and even something like Beat Saber require occasional overhead or behind the back movements to be accurate, which aren't doable with WMR.

If you're not sure about it you can get a Rift as an entry level, and then either go for the FBT upgrade with Vive lighthouses or sell it and go full Vive. You may end up wanting to keep the Rift for its superior controllers, though.
