Has anyone with a vive experienced an issue recently where your controllers work just fine but they no longer appear in-game when you're setting up full body tracking in T-pose? I can't see them at all, but I can still get them to lock in on my model and pick things up etc... Not finding much online about an issue like this.

I just built a new PC so I'm trying to soak up all the VR content I can now, but after having installed Oculus Home and ReVive I can't get any Oculus games to start, AND Oculus starts itself anytime I start a game on Steam that is also on Oculus. Do I need to switch to the SteamVR beta branch? Or is it just janky because VR?

Generally speaking, programming isnt as hard or as easy as people think. It's a moderately difficult task with a high skill ceiling. Making a game is also heavily dependent on a game engine someone else created already, like unity or unreal engine, so you dont actually have to create physics and such from scratch hugely decreasing your workload.

However, even with these prebuilt engines, creating fluid animations and nice looking models takes a full time artist alone, the scripts and events to run everything takes moderate skill, and you need to learn the game engine at a fairly high level.

A good game is not easy. But anyone can make a trash pixel rpg.

The new Acer looks poised to compete with the Samsung Odyssey as a 1st rate headset - if they're using LCD panels, they might end up with the lowest screen door of any headset now, though with worse contrast than Samsung and Vive's OLEDs.

Personally, I've been using the Samsung and I am an absolute fan. The controller tracking is better than /vrg/ would lead you to think, and otherwise the headset its self is an even match for the Vive Pro.

There's a lot out there in VR, AR, XR or what have you. It's an industry projected to be up to $100billion in another few years. People here keep telling me there isn't anything to discuss but that just isn't true. The fact that there is news everyday should make everyone think otherwise. Truly niche things don't have that and things feel way different in this space now than they did even two years ago. A lot more practical effort is being made now that the initial hype factor has died down and things are continuing to grow at a stable pace. Another generation or two and I think we'll start to see VR everywhere.

You mention some of the applications but there's so many more that I know haven't even been touched yet. No one has been developing many of the tools that I see as potentially be ubiquitous in certain sectors. Like you can't possibly tell me that we are all that far off from every R&D department worth a damn having a VR/AR hmd and software for product visualizations? Seeing products in design in a real human scale vs. in traditional CAD is such a game changer. The hacked together solution I use to do that has completely changed how I go about design work. It's just such a richer environment.

I don't know if there is a fair comparison for VR. the landscape is so different from what it was when PCs or cellphones were first being developed. I think that's one reason people are a bit apprehensive about it.

That's another good example. People tend to think about it as just for games or porn and while that's what most people will use it for personally it's interesting for how it will be used for more important things. I don't usually get too excited about following new tech developments because they don't often affect me, I can't afford them, or I don't see much application. VR has been super interesting to follow though because of all the creativity on display.

Funny, because it's one of the way more optimized worlds. The lights are emission or point and all medium quality and fully baked, plus, there's reflection probes and light probes. The lag was from the avatars there, not the world itself. Try going there with 16 friends with well optimized avatars and you'll see. There's only one realtime light and it's set to low quality, and you can turn it off . It's above the pool. That being said, I was there at peak people, and if you turn off the light above the pool the difference is negligible at best. The main issue was snail markers rendering in the sky visible all at the same time due to the way they work. The occlusion culling that normally happens for those was not (but you should use a particle renderer marker instead, anon, they're just better.)
