VGL11 is right around the corner and it's time to start getting the gears in motion again. The google doc that helped form the original /vrg/ soccer team is now back up and running and taking suggestions. We're retiring 5 players so there's 5 open spots for new suggestions. We're also allowed to have up to 6 referees host the VGL11 tournament in every game. It'd be nice to have a stadium too, especially since the first game of the tournament would be played on our stadium, so there's a page for suggestions for stadiums too.

You can mess around with some of the settings to force stick turning in some games that don't normally support it, but most games let you turn with the stick.

Yeah, you have absolutely no peripheral vision, and things aren't as clear unless your heard is pointing directly at them. You have to turn your head more than you would in real life.

I will also say, most pistol grips in the real world are a little meaningless in VR, because a lot of the real world stuff was made to account for dealing with physical recoil, which doesn't really exist for us in VR tech yet. I care only because it's better to make habits out of good practices rather than what would normally be bad in the real world or if we had better VR tech or a VR peripheral that could produce realistic recoil forces.

As far as Metaverses go Janus is perhaps the most unique in it's approach and has little in common with other social VR programs. It is at it's core a literal 3d web browser. Everything you see is built in a modified HTML script and webpanels are everywhere. You can actually browse many of the hosted worlds from your web browser if it supports HTML5

I'm still working out the best way to join but I think we can just all meetup in the main Vesta page in the back of the room. If I found out it's not possible to get multiplayer working we'll push this off for some other time.
Be warned this program suffers from frequent crashes and has been buggy from the moment it was born 4 years ago. Despite the crashes though it does at least run at a consistent FPS. If it crashes you may need to close it out through task manager to get it to run again. Additionally it seems that the VR menu in game was broken in the recent release so to change your username you need to go to setting from the burger icon on the desktop app. There's also a social panel in there where you can see other users. I believe I should be visible, look for Gizmo, but I cannot confirm on my own.

In the last world I visited I found a graveyard of every developer and content creator to have set foot in Janus. Perhaps one of the saddest things I've seen in my time in VR.

JanusVR is a completely abandoned project at this point and unfortunately has been left in a nearly unplayable state. There's a multitude of worlds in it if you can make it to them but there's even more broken links.
If you want to see what's there I'd reccomend checking the other link I posted to Vesta as you can explore the world on your web browser in a much more stable environment.

So that concludes our exploration of JanusVR. Streamable anon might have gotten one video out of that.
As far as further Metaverse exploration the only ones that are currently remaining on my list are High Fidelity, and Altspace. I know an anon already posted streamables on High Fidelity so I'll likely skip that one.

The portal system is the most interesting thing this has going for it. You open doorways to new worlds and they stay persistent so you can always trace your way back to where you started. More analogous to an endlessly expanding labyrinth rather than series of discrete experiences.
I also think in a way it incentivizes including links to other similar worlds given that they are nearly impossible to find with the inbuilt tools. This lends to an overall experience reminiscent of webrings back in the days before good search engines.
That's something I'd really like to see more of in VR. It's fun exploring when you can just keep diving down the rabbit hole not knowing where it might lead you.

I think a decent compromise is to do what Neos, or Valve's lab does where it renders a panosphere of where you're going instead of a 2d plane. To me it also makes generally more sense to download the instance when you activate the portal instead of hopping you over to a loading screen. You could still do stuff in the current world while the portal fully loaded.

What is the trick to using the sawn-off? It never kills without a reload when I use it, but other players seem to be able to consistently oneshot with it, even at longer ranges.

So how many of you guys actually play VR Chat to find a relationship/'vrfu' or whatever it is, I'm curious. Before I even hopped on to some of the meet-ups for the general I had 'intimate' encounters with people prior and nothing really became of them. The only ones that lasted in and out of the game were people just wanting to have fun, not love/gf/bf/whatever the fuck. I've been playing mmo's for a long time because muh social anxiety/depression/autism etc as a replacement for some form of a social life, and vrchat just happens to be the hot new thing which i'll probably stick with for a long time, short of a better vr platform to move to. Admittedly when I was young I played mmo's with also the hope that I might also meet that special someone but over time I've realized that's probably never going to happen. That was over 15 years ago, so I've pretty much given up on that. I just don't keep any expectations on that front what so ever and just enjoy the time I have with the friends I've met in vrchat.

Just bought a third Rift Sensor. Will I be able to have normal tracking while facing backwards from my normal position? My big roadblock for VR so far has been that I have to face toward my computer so that fatass Rift cable is in the way of my left arm.

Yes. Just place 2 sensors on your table and the 3rd one behind you. I have 3, each on each corner of the room. 2 on the roof and another one at waist level. Honestly with 3 sensors you can pretty much put them wherever the fuck you want basically. You can even get 360 with 2 sensors if you put them on opposite corners. It's all about placement
