This has always amused me, because HTC also has a oculus go competitor, the vive focus, and a oculus quest competitor, the shadow VR (pic related), also standalone with inside-out tracking. HTC didn't even have a black friday sale on the vive, yet oculus is the one that's "casualizing".

My prediction is that standalone VR sets will take a majority of industry attention for a while, from all manufacturers, until we get actual gen 2 PC VR hardware in 2020. The PCVR focus for the next year or so will be software and games.

1. Its a limitation of the Snapdragon 835. You want actual inputs on the SoC, which it doesnt have.
2. Working around that fact simply results in a first party ALVR/Riftcat, which I already have and plan to use with my Quest. Based on all the time I spent using my Gear VR as my primary PCVR set, and upcoming Riftcat updates, I think this will be quite viable. If the Quest gets a Moonlight/GameStream fork, then a first-party solution isnt needed because you cant really get any better than driver-level streaming and Carmack wont be able to improve on it much.

Oculus only selected moving the screens in Half Dome because there wasn't already a solution out there already that met their needs at their price point. I hope the actual eye-tracking tech is good enough when the varifocal tech is production-ready. AFAIK it's an IR camera pointed at your pupils, which may have training problems/robustness across the population. It's important to get right too though, for foveated rendering.

Oh, yeah that's a big difference then. At that scale, we have a lot more options open for actuators that will be both cheaper, more efficient, and robust. But I still question whether their lenses perform too well in cost and visual quality. The easy way is to change the fbx import settings to generic, which will freeze your avatar in place (no IK at all), then translate the model upwards above the ground in unity and adjust the viewball to match. For floating up and down, override the idle animation with one that moves the mesh up and down slightly. Or maybe add a second animator to the gameobject directly, I'm not sure

If you still want a humanoid rig for arm movements or being able to do gesture overrides, then you'll have to adjust the armature in blender so the leg bones extend below the model itself (floating). The IK will fix the leg bones to the floor.

Actually only the "Caspar" program was cancelled. We don't actually know how many "Rift 2" programs they have/had. Hell, the Valve leak was weeks ago and the images are from -June-, only serving to demonstrate how utterly in the dark we are as a whole. The Kinect gets a lot of hate but desu I think it is worth the money. You get some of FBT's features for 50 bucks vs 500 (That is if you buy Driver4VR). I use mine nearly nightly at this point and I have to say it is very much worth the money. Personally I can't justify the full FBT since it is spending 500 bucks, on 1st gen VR tech that I would ONLY use for 1 game. I already spent 350 for my headset and 400 if you count the kinect setup I feel that is a reasonable amount to invest for a first Generation VR setup I don't want to end up like the guys that invested all that cash into their AthlonFX rigs just for the Athlon 64 X2 to drop and make mine grossly obsolete. We have seen in the news that a whole new generation of headsets are coming out from Oculus, HTC, Valve, etc so it is clear Generation 2 is on it's way don't invest in Gen 1 Full body for 1 game when Gen 2 everything is on it's way. Vive lighthouses have a pretty decent FOV - 120 degrees in either axis. You should be able to cover your entire very small space with them, though obviously you need line of sight between your trackers and at least one lighthouse at all times, so you might have to be clever about how you mount them around something like a bunk bed.
WMR struggles sometimes with tracking when your face is close to a surface (ie: less than a foot), especially if it's a flat color with no detail, which may or may not be an issue for you. You also need at least a bit of light for it to track, so you might be better off with pure Vive.

If I'm fully honest I'm not entirely sure if every finger gets a grip button or if they've just got capacitance sensors under them. I'm fairly certain it has a trigger per finger which is the point of the palm strap. I really really wanna try throwing grenades with it.

The movement mechanics are very different. The way weapons and gear is handled is different. The game modes are different.
