I'm finally cutting up some recordings I took from rec room meetup last friday. It's a pretty underrated game around /vrg/, I'd say. No, you can't be anime, but most of the things you can do are quite fun. First off is the quests, which play a bit like this at first

Nice big chunky swords, and bow and arrows, waves of dorks to kill, pots to smash. Looks easy at first, but it actually gets pretty hectic, as it's 1 hit KO from enemies.

You revive teammates by high-fiving them, but it costs points when you die. We still have yet to actually beat a quest because we're bad, but the scoring gets you some costumes or something if you do well, plus just bragging rights.

After we got 2 more people, we did some 3v3 paintball. It's pretty good too. You get some basic maps, an infinite ammo peashooter, 1 hit kill with ~3 second respawns.

I think it'd be even more fun with 4v4 which is the max. One thing I was a little disappointed was with the selection of weapons, which seemed limited to the pistol, a shotgun, grenades, and a sniper rifle. They're all pretty satisfying for a free game, but I know there are more weapons implemented, since you can spawn them in the "creative" mode. There's a grenade launcher, a machine gun, etc.

Worth noting you can make custom maps and even custom game modes in their scripting system. I didn't check if it already exists, but I imagine with a sufficient amount of autism, we could be doing search and destroy on dust, in rec room.

Picked this up, but I'm not liking it as much as Assetto Corsa so far. The VR support is great, but the FFB seems pretty bad. I was able to get the violent shaking to stop, but it still doesn't feel right.

I was thinking tonight actually, if there's enough interest. Maybe 2130 Eastern time. If we get 3-4 people, we do quests, 6-8 we can do paintball/laser tag. If somehow we get more, we could do the battle royale thing I guess, I've never tried it.

After paintball we did try laser tag 3v3, which was actually super fun. Instead of CTF it uses a points system, decrease/increase based on kills. There's also a spartan laser superweapon that spawns every few minutes in the center of a map. Sadly I forgot to record any of it, but I'd definitely play that again. Unlike the painball modes, it's not 1 hit kill, and you can revive allies with a high five, so it's a little more forgiving. Also laser, so straight fire instead of lobbing paint.

After that we were back down to 4 people so we tried another quest. This one had potions that gave you double damage, and a few more weapons. We still couldn't defeat the boss though, that 1 hit ko with projectiles really gets ya. Hopefully we can clear one tonight. Really satisfying for such a simple dungeon crawl. Feels like playing the old gauntlet games in a way.

hifi is pretty interesting actually. It's a "social VR metaverse" thing like vrchat, but despite the normie-friendly outward appearance on their website, there's actually a fair amount of weebshit in there. Kind of like vrchat.net's homepage vs the actual game.

Here we are in the canonical "body mart" which had few anime and a few non-anime avatars you could choose. There is also a weird IK effect on the finger rigs when you get close to collidable meshes, hence the groping. For science.

And, surprisingly, FBT works! Same sort of calibration and config as vrchat is supported. Anon reported that the viewball position is a lot less fucky than vrchat too, e.g. when laying down. They also apparently support 4 or 5 tracker setups (chest tracker and shoulder trackers), and perception neuron, if you have lots of spare cash to throw around.

I couldn't test it myself though, since I'm on the rift hybrid setup. hifi uses the oculus api directly. I bet you can still force it to use steamVR and thus do the same hybrid setup, especially since the client is open source, but I didn't look into it.

Social systems are pretty much the same as vrchat. There's a friends list and stuff, with the added perk that you get to shake hands to become "connected", with a cheesy particle effect. Apparently you can also script the position somewhere else, e.g. for headpat connections or something. There are also "wearables" as seen by the mask at the end of the webm, which get bound to parts of your armature.

One thing we did note is there's no global text search for friends, so you physically have to find a person first in order to friend them. Also there's no invite system, though you can still join somebody if they're in a public world. Didn't look too deeply though.

I think the problem in VRC is that the fixed point for the FBT IK isn't the headset, it's the hip bone, hence your whole body goes flying off hip first when you lose tracking. It seems to make a lot more sense to keep your head -> headset in place, but I guess the viewball is bound to your root gameobject anyway, not your actual armature. Maybe someday tupper will fix it.

After bullshitting about VRChat and tupper and stuff for a while, we tried hopping to a few more worlds. I dunno if it was because of the self-hosting thing or what, but I did have trouble loading some worlds, just stuck in a loading screen for ages. I didn't have any real performance problems once in-game though, though one of the other anons I was with said he had some. Worked on my machine.

We ended the night at an anime avatar world. Just a bunch of mostly TDA animes, lined up on the edge of a plane. Very aesthetic.

Overall, I liked hifi. It's the most equivalent to vrchat out of all the stuff we tried so far, and it has muh open source self-hosted moral high ground. It's definitely lacking in adoption though, and is still a bit clunky in places. I'd keep an eye out for it though, and give it a try if you want. We might have to do more exploring there, since we mostly sat in snail's world for the night. Up there with NeosVR and anyland as "worth trying again".

No software is perfect. The mastery of multiple of them will make you more capable. They're just tools. I have friends in 3d industry who use Maya and some how use Blender professionally, but ideally you want to have a complete bag of tricks which usually means 2 software for modeling and 2 for texturing/UVmapping. It's a problem with all current VR headsets. The screen is optically projected about 2 meters away from your eyes by the lenses, so when your eyes try to focus on anything that's virtually closer than that, they focus wrong and shit looks blurry. Future headsets are trying to solve this with multi or varifocal optics.

After a couple of hours in VR (depending on the person) your brain actually gives up trying to focus based on distance, so it gets a little less blurry. Then it takes some time back IRL to relearn the focusing mechanism. It's called the accommodation-vergence conflict, pretty interesting stuff.
