Valve is a money printer, not a game dev. HL3 will -never- live up to the hype and expectation people have piled up for it, so why would they risk it when they don't need to?

The consensus among the valve dicksucking community is that it's a prequel featuring Alex.
If she does not speak I'm fine with it, although playing as a girl would feel strange while doing kickass half life things.

There is one solution but it's not pretty.
It's called VorpX and it's expensive, but pretty good.

If it was half price I'd recommend it even.

HL3/Valve is powerful enough to do that sort of shit.

This is why they're going to make a VR Console that comes with the headset and the hardware to run it.
They've cornered the PC gaming enthusiast market completely from casual to hardcore and they started by going after the hardcore.
They will corner the future of VR the exact same way. HTC was a mere sacrificial pawn. Wouldn't even be surprised if Valve is the one that buys out their Vive VR division if it does get spun off.
The future of gaming is VR. Valve will do whatever it can to keep it's dominance of whatever the future holds for gaming.
I'm going to get shitted on for saying this and called delusional but I wouldn't even be surprised if Valve goes public in order to achieve it.

Announcement for Rift price drop to tree fiddy ($350) maybe happening soon.

The $350 is stated as a price drop on Best Buy
>https://www.bestbuy.com/site/oculus-rift-touch-virtual-reality-headset-bundle-for-compatible-windows-pcs-black/5989502.p?skuId=5989502&intl=nosplash
whereas there are other on-sale items that don't have that wording.

A self-proclaimed Best Buy employee confirms that this means it is a price drop which is permanent:
>https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/comments/accdyi/vr_headset_oculus_rift_350_50/ed6v73l/

And finally, Amazon just simply lists the Rift at $350, without any amount cut or crossed off:

if you're not going to decimate at least atlas and use very few or no dynamic bones
you get a good boy rating for your avatar with less than 32k tris

This.

But man, can you imagine how darn good VR will get once we have legit eye tracking capable of foveated rendering? It'll allow:
>revolutionary, paradigm shifting UI and interaction systems for both work and entertainment
>varifocal
>foveated rendering up to 95% reduction of pixels
>cheaper and lower PC requirements
>higher possible graphics, possibly with photorealistic fully ray traced scenes instead of hybrid rendering becoming possible or near possible depending on the graphics cards by that time
>higher resolution, possibly to 20/20 vision with Varjo-like techniques of which they as well as Oculus both have a patent on
>higher FOV
>less lens distortion
>actually cheap wireless adapter capability with foveated transport

So literally, if it's a true high end headset at like 800 bucks, then we might be able to get, from some company, a >120 degree FOV, human eye resolution, varifocal, wireless, PC VR headset. And that's not to mention all the other developments happening unrelated to eye tracking, which are, needless to say, a lot.

970fag here, seeing how nothing is worth buying currently unless you want to shell out a lot of money, it's still a really viable card for gamedev.
If you're going to use Unity to dev, please use 2018.3.
I have not had issues with VR games using a 970 besides from being crippled by my 4th gen i5.
A lot of people in /vrg/ who bought VR in 2016 still use a 970, remember that, and if you're going to dev for VR, the 970/1060 should still be your minimum target, so definitely don't ditch the card.

The actual real life performance difference between the 1060 and 970 is negligible.

It's not always good, though:
If you're fairly well known and show up in other media, that causes people to google those logos and can invite both newfriends and asshats.
So yeah, sometimes it's nice to do, other times not so much. If you never hang out in pubs, nbd.

usually where other people are, but I have a soft spot for mmd stage 1, it's a really old map that has been around since at least the steam release (maybe earlier) and was one of the first well performing and properly lit "night" maps. It's cozy and has ambient sound and a smart locking system to prevent people spamming the dancers.
Also it's a lot more than dancing mmd avatars, there's fully scripted stage effects with meshes that the developer tossed in that goes along with each song.

Hi anon.
The best way to do the basics is probuilder, and you can use unity itself!
Probuilder allows you to create volumes like a big square, and then you just "flip normals" to make a box. There's your walls and such.
floors are just a material, so find yourself a carpet texture and slap that bitch on.

Don't wait for that, just make sure your project is ready to work with VR controls and make it work with the Rift, then make sure it's optimized (build your game on Unity's Entity Component System and use GPU instancing).
If you're an Unreal dev, I can't suggest you anything, if you're one of those people who likes to make their own engines then I don't have to tell you anything since I assume you know everything already.

If you're going to be using Unity and the Oculus SDK, all of that should be covered, all you're going to have to meet is a performance target for Oculus Quest since it's a mobile system on a chip system (Snapdragon 835 iirc), so look up on how to dev for that and what your limits are.

My hope is the following:
Knucks revealed as both a seperate lighthouse compatable product AND as the default controller for the valve in house HMD
HMD comes for sale with a VR version of the Orange box, which includes a bunch of special titles that steamdb revealed last year in a bundle that includes the "who's who" of good vr games.
Fade to black, Half Life VR: which is basically half life 1.5 where you play the role of alex vance during or around the 6 hour war.
2 other exclusive for vr titles are announced as well, made in vr by valve and bundled with the headset.

So, this is my hope, but not only that, it's INCREDIBLY LIKELY. The leaks and steamdb have all but confirmed that's what's going to happen.
Plus, the chief writer of half life 2 just started working at valve again Q4 2018, and is credited in the artifact game credits as well.
Valve has been busier this and last year than any other year since dota2 came out. There's some major shakeup going on there, and HLVR has been in the game code leaks for source 2 engine for some time now.
Erik Wolpaw just returned to valve as well.
Big things are happening and CES is where HARDWARE, not software, is typically announced.

that might be hlVR.

Sorry if I misunderstood your question though, you can't seem to connect the Quest to PC and use it (I may be wrong), so until someone hacks that together, the Rift is meant for desktop use, Quest is for wireless lightweight mobile VR, and to dev for that Unity 2018.3's LWRP is perfect.

Ofc it works, cloning is especially good for color gradient textures because you can simply copy the gradient from a similar spot instead of recreating it by pen. You just need to chose a smaller area and work a little longer on it until it's perfect. In my webm, the texture also had a small gradient I guess you can't see it because of the video quality.

you know one of the interesting reasons why the japanese tend to have strange fetishes like this?
They GENETICALLY don't really have body odor unless they're significantly jomon admixture. I know it sounds crazy, but it's true. (south koreans even more so) Not only is it difficult to find deodorant there, their earwax is DRY.
I often wonder what the heck in prehistory caused this adaptation, and what benefit it would infer, but it explains the look of mmd and vr 3d models and some of the fetishes found within their artwork generally.
They don't smell, and even though they don't smell and many of them are so clean on a daily basis that they get allergies from lack of exposure, they still bathe daily. One thing I really miss is the deep soaking tubs they all have, and I've been meaning to convert my bathroom to have one.
Many of them think/say westerners have an odor, too, you have to be really careful on public transit or they get pissed off.
It's surprisingly easy to pass as halfu though with a little bit of makeup and a haircut.

depends on how laggy their servers are at the time and how close you are to the facebook node it's delivering the software to you on.
Sometimes it takes 10 minutes, other times an hour or two, but rest assured you just need to wait. There really should be some kind of indication as to what the fuck it's doing, but they designed it to be done by the time you were done doing calibration and setup, though it doesn't always work out that way.

second life has over a decade to attract people who can actually model or have learned to model.
Shonzo literally just started making from scratch avatars and a bunch of actually talented modellers are finally starting to port stuff into vrchat. Sadly, many of them were lured by sansar.
It's only been a year since vrchat has become a nearly known name among socal virtual world applications and there's quite a few players in this space.
VRChat has had the worst marketing of them all, but due to the scrappy nature of the devs and actual usability of the platform it has the best word of mouth.

Have you seen the INSANE marketing behind high fidelity, sansar, and other virtual worlds? If you were a normie, and comparing all the different apps out there, wouldn't it look like High Fidelity for example has their shit together compared to what they find on vrchat??
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=4&v=eAtCCNkcPN0
we live in a bubble, but vrchat has the benefit of viral marketing to hardcore gamers, which is the core demographic of vr headset owners right now. It's winning because they've embraced that (finally). It's very likely ron and pill wanted to be more like sansar and second life to capture that demographic instead of the anime and meme fans, but what they got instead was a massive japanese fanbase along with worldwide weebs, which I think they're finally realizing is far, far better for growth.

Nothing is as confusing and archaic as literally having to use blender and unity to set up your avatar lmao. You've got the option to make everything in SL from within the game itself, OR upload it yourself the same way VRChat offers. There's simply more options. And over a decade for a virtual market to grow and offer products.

>>239913294
No, I'm making my own observations from having been on both for years, dumbass. The points I'm making are incredibly obvious if you've ever tried SL. It has its own marketplace, it has a community that's been around making custom creations since the day it existed. It has an actual avatar system with sliders, and rigged meshes and clothes that you can fit to avatars, you know, like a proper social game should allow.

These two statements sound highly conflicting to me.

When I think of sliders, I think of Bethesda character creators, and nothing sounds more restrictive and counter to creativity to me than being limited to sliders and a bunch of prefabs.

Being able to make stuff directly in Blender and Unity is not "archaic", it is liberating and leads to more diverse characters.

But hey, maybe whatever that "avatar system" entails is great, but you aren't making a good job of marketing for it.

I joined SL three years ago, and it's still kicking strong. If I can get in everywhere, so can you. Learn to talk to people, same as getting in the right places irl, same as vrchat. If you can't find the community of people you're looking for, you're not looking hard enough.

>>239914334
You're overlooking an enormous point being a learning curve and effort required. The amount of work one has to do to even upload anything at all to VRChat is a steeper learning curve than almost anyone will ever care to do, and learning to "customize" a VR avatar is teaching yourself 3D modeling, essentially. Almost no one will bother, and so most will look like shit. Restrictions exist because of convenience, not to limit options. SL allows you to upload in almost the exact same way as VR, but how many actually do? Very few. It's effort, and there's a convenient market for most items/avatars that anyone could want already.

Does this sound like uniqueness and creativity to you?
No, the creator didn't sculpt, rig or texture anything either.

It's frankensteined together like a generic TDA edit, except that it was done within the narrow restrictions of SL, rather than allowing the choice you get in Blender and Unity.

I agree that it is easier for people to frankenstein something together within SL than to frankenstein it in Blender or Unity, or actually really create something on their own in Blender and Unity, though.
At least if you only want exactly what is offered there. I'll give you that.

>there's a convenient market for most items/avatars that anyone could want already.
there's literally dozens to hundreds of avatar worlds that provide a "market" like experience with variant avatars based on a base mesh or several base meshes for people who don't want to roll their own in vrchat. I know you like SL but it sounds like you should be playing sansar or high fidelity if that's what you want.

MMD models thrived on the fact that pmedit and MMM/MMD is literally like playing with paper dolls for the ease of modifying and attaching various body parts and accessories, but without any body size restrictions.
literal 13yo's popularized mmd in the west, so your argument is invalid.
Since mmd basically imports directly into unity and vrchat perfectly and it's become the common aesthetic of the game NATURALLY rather then forced, with no restriction on a new aesthetic becoming the norm if the users decide that's what they want, it's automatically ahead of the game.
There was a time when vrchat was going to adopt avatars from morph3d or ready player one avatar creator. I'm sure as fuck glad that didn't happen or was enforced.

>The amount of work one has to do to even upload anything at all to VRChat is a steeper learning curve than almost anyone will ever care to do
I don't have any stats on that, but I have the impression that far more than "almost anyone" cares enough to upload "anything at all", which could as well be a readymade Unity asset file.
"Almost anyone" of whom are you talking about anywas? All of humanity, or the current hardcore population of VR enthusiasts? Or of the VRC players?

I knew literally nothing about Blender and Unity when I first uploaded my avatar. Took me 2 minutes to upload the avatar someone had set up for me. Would've taken me two clicks more to add simple prefabs like glasses, like we did on New Year's. I met dozens of people that wore the glasses posted here, and many of those had no technical expertise either, so I am again wondering how you can say something like almost no one bothering to upload anything at all.

At this point I don't know if you're just deluding yourself to try and win this argument. After all I've said, do you still really think that VRChat has overall better customization and avatars, than the literal millions of variety that SL has? Because I sure don't, and I've been on both for a long time. I still prefer VRChat, but for other reasons.

>>239916475
First of all, you're comparing adding a single item onto an avatar to creating a whole avatar, and secondly, you've got a strong bias as /vrg/ is already way more technically competent than the average vrchat user. Since they've all uploaded avatars before, of course they're gonna know how to add an item to one by now. I was referring to the full VRC userbase.

is there any setting i'm missing or something? i figured that since the lenses are practically on your eyes, it wouldn't matter that my far away vision isn't great, am I wrong here?

adjust your ipd and the rift on your face so your eyeballs are in the sweetspot. Learn to move your head rather than your eyes most of the time to look around so what you're looking at stays in the sweet spot.
No, it's not normal for text to be extremely blurry unless you need glasses for things beyond 3 to 6 feet away, I suspect you have a combonation of those two issues.
Oh also there's the issue of focal planes. Anything closer than arms length will actually not do correct stereopsis so your eyes will attempt to converge (go crossed) but the image doesn't change in current hardware to accommodate, so it'll be harder to read. Text at arms length is generally perfect.
This may sound like a big deal but it really isn't. Do the "green cross" calibration thing carefully.

Also when a scene is first loading sometimes the supersample and graphics settings are turned way the fuck down, make sure you opt into the beta and your gpu drivers are up to date, that you're using (if nvidia) "prefer performance" in the power settings in the control panel and that "vr pre-calculated frames" is set to auto instead of 1 which is the default (stupidly)

as I suspected. You actually want the strap of the rift or vive to be basically lower than you would expect, and your nose should be practically against the nose hole.
If you look closely at the lenses you'll see that the absolute center of them is perfectly clear.

If you have astigmatism or separate prescriptions for each eye (or both like me!) there's actually a method to get it perfect. first, use the green cross to adjust the position of the hmd so that it's as sharp as possible, with one eye covered. Adjust the IPD knob until you start to see the screendoor effect when you're looking for it, that's how you know it's absolutely sharp. Then, cover that eye and do the same for the other. You'll find something that works equally good for both eyes without glasses if you don't want to wear them .

I'm considering laser eye surgery as soon as it's confirmed that the current methods no longer fuck with eye tracking tech

It would take a bit of slider work but you could probably replicate it pretty closely. The real question is how well will room-temp IQ mapmaker's lighting work with it. Some maps fucking HATE toonramps, to the point of my default Unity scene looking ideal with Xiexie's, but some maps making it look almost as aggressive as Standard with the shadows.
You can do it, you'd just have to do a lot of testing, either uploading every attempt and checking various maps with different lighting styles (simple baked Unity light, probes, point lights, ect) or setting up a sample scene.
Adjusting the limits of the toonramps on hair and skin would allow you to get the bright pink/deep grey shadows, as the rimlights counter the ramp and give you the brightness around the edges of the hair and face.
Shouldn't be too hard really, it'd just be a pain in the ass to get it working consistently.

this is true.
keep in mind that most shaders with toon ramps actually react to BAKED lighting illumination values to make you look more toon then flat and realtime lights rarely change most shaders, it's one of the appeals to noe's and mtoon since you can have both.
If you increase the gi ramp and they're using post processing though it can be bad.

I didn't say there weren't any games, I said there weren't any decent ones. Over half are "experiences" that have no value. Another chunk are fun for 5-10 hours tops despite costing $30.

There are a few that are decent, like I enjoy Pavlov for what it is, but its still niche and full of 12 year olds. There's no major games on VR that I could sink dozens and dozens of hours into and that just sours shelling out hundreds of dollars for a headset.

I got into the exact same funk you described in the huge gap in software between the dk2 and the vive, and the vive and the oculus rift, and last gen vs what we're waiting for now.
"Good" games take around 3 years to make and we'll be seeing tons after ces for sure.
But instead of waiting for the future:

Arizona Sunshine,
SuperHot VR,
Budget Cuts,
I expect you to die,
Accounting +,
Virtual Virtual Reality,
Sairento VR,
Raw Data,
the Campaigns in Star Trek bridge crew,
Both of "The Gallery" games

and many others are all worth a playthrough if you can obtain them. None of those feel like a "tech demo".

as for multiplayer,
Creed: Rise to Glory is a crazy top tier game with multiplayer competitive online that is still being worked on by the devs despite being "finished".
Sprint vector, despite is lower player base is similarly top tier and competitive.

there's several games that I would say were released too early and failed to catch on, or were released far too early access (like QuiVr) and seem "old" by today's standards now.

Racket: NX being one. It's one of the best multiplayer sports games I've ever played and it's netcode and sound puts literally everything else to shame. Nobody plays it. It's so sad, honestly, even the devs were posting on reddit asking what the fuck happened, the game was developed by a team spun off of WAVES, the single largest VST and game audio production company on earth, and the people behind the audio in rocksmith and rockband and other games.

You shouldn't have to apply manually, you likely just need to switch to legacy texture import on the mesh objects if you're using unity 2017. Select every single one of the meshes then go to that tab and select "legacy" for the texutre import and I bet it's all good.

I think the biggest tell for me was that the /vrg/ discord has its porn-posting channel move faster than its two general channels combined most of the time.

VRChat is seemingly carrying the entire platform for a lot of people right now, and I have zero interest in it. I'll probably just return my headset, because none of those look like something worth it.

I played this about a month ago, recorded a streamable
https://streamable.com/uqrgi

The music and graphical aesthetic is funky, but the gameplay didn't hold my attention that well. It's basically breakout with a racket. Multiplayer is co-op breakout where you take turns smacking it, there's no real player interaction besides competing on score. Worth playing sometime for $5 on sale? sure. Worth $20 and hours of queueing up with randoms to smack their shit in? nah.

vrchat has been out since late 2014 early 2015 and it only caught on in late 2017. That's such a silly assumption to make.
"early access" IS a plague on gaming though, and it's what causes this sentiment. You might have noticed that devs have gone back to for the most part limited time betas or demos and just doing a full release out of nowhere instead.

because the more options a shader has the less efficient it is in game to the point of creating multiple draw calls, and cs shader helper scripts are automatically culled by vrchatsdk, making them harder to use.
The thing you're asking for ironically exists though, and it's the best looking shader for anime style models there is, and it's part of mmd4mechanim.
Unfortunately it uses closed source DLLs and cs scripts up the wazoo as basically a wrapper for the model to accomplish this and is completely erased and blocked by vrchat, and erases and blocks vrchat's sdk generally.
yes, there are ways around this, I've uploaded an example in a world for fun before, but until someone rips Nora's scripts and re-writes the methods used in mmd4mech's shader who is less lazy than me you'll need to deal with purpose built shaders if you want to stay efficient.

Unity shaders have preprocessing directives for certain codepaths that you can turn on and off in material inspector though, and custom material GUI scripts work fine with the SDK. Runtime scripts, sure, but you could still do a pretty comprehensive shader, see xiexe, arktoon, mtoon, UTCv2 for examples.

At some point though, you might as well say "just install amplify and make your own shader lol" or "learn HLSL lol", instead of trying to break out every single little option into another slider.

Beat Saber? 2-3k
Pavlov? 600-800
Blade and Sorcery? 200-300

keep in mind that the metrics for VR games are fucked in steam by the fact that they stop being tracked if you run any secondary overlay software, if you're from china, if you run them through viveport, if you're offline, if you have oculus, etc etc etc.
Same thing goes for the hardware survey, it only counts if the hmd is plugged in.
One other thing with VR is that people have the physical ability of a sloth these days. MOST GAMERS get 1 to 5 hours at the very maximum a day to game, and in VR is even less due to physical movement needed. VRChat is low impact. "simultaneous" players is a poor metric to judge how much people are actually in game, it's always going to be less than other types of games due to the average of 1.5 hours people can handle standing in vr at first. Many people pop onto beat saber for 30 minutes until they're pooped and then take the headset off. If you think about it that way, 4000 SIMULTANEOUS beat saber players is absolutely INSANE.
there's a fuckton more people using vr than you think, even if you only count wired vr headsets on pc and ps4.
the growth mimics the early iphone days still very closely actually, but exceeds it in many ways.
Vr headset purchases DOUBLED this year over last year - that's a fact, and Oculus doesn't release it's playtime numbers, and the oculus ecosystem avoids steam.
Anonymous No.239930564 Replies: >>239931232
>>239929602
Unless you can track how much of those are desktoppers and VR users, it's hard to get a gauge if VRChat is carrying the VR section on steam's stats. Then there's PSVR and Oculus store to take into account.
Please return your headset.

>>239930318
to further expand on my point: I would bet the average beat saber session is 30 minutes to an hour, pic related.
You can prove that by looking at the average and median playtime in the last two weeks. I bet most people boot the game up twice on weekends for a half hour to an hour or so with some outlier exceptions.
I know some vr arcades are going to inflate those numbers a bit.
there's anywhere from 200k to 500k owners according to steamspy which has been proven to be grossly underestimating on occasion not to mention the game is available on three massively huge platforms that are NOT steam.

Okay, so with that out of the way, think about it.

There's 2420 different pcs on STEAM ALONE playing beatsaber right now in the middle of the fuckin' day for north america with a THIRTY MINUTE average player turnover. That means probably TWENTY THOUSAND PEOPLE booted up and played beat saber and closed it over the span of the last 2 hours.

just on steam. The game is available on oculus, windows mixed reality, and psvr without loading steam at all.

oh, and I should mention there's a proximity sensor that launches vr the minute you put it on on windows mixed reality and oculus.
There's also a proximity sensor on vive but the valve devs quickly realized people didn't like or use, since there's a button anyway, so it doesn't do anything unless you program your app to use it.
Openvr advanced settings can expose it to mute and unmute the mic and I think some viveport apps will pause when the headset when it's detected as off.

I can't speak for retopology as I have never done it but decimation is stupidly easy, unless the model is 1 million tris in which case you do retopology
I'm convinced those who fear weight painting are those who look at the whole model at once and try to paint and get very confused, like you are trying to eat a whole elephant at once
you can select verticies and press p then hit by selection to make it it's own mesh and you can do it a little at a time
when I rig entire models I usually have about 60ish different meshes

most of the tools use some combination of this, http://openaccess.thecvf.com/content_cvpr_2017/papers/Tran_Regressing_Robust_and_CVPR_2017_paper.pdf

https://arxiv.org/pdf/1812.02246.pdf here's the paper on that instant 2d mesh thing, the key takeaway is:

To construct a 3D mesh with skeletal rigging, we first fit
a SMPL model to the 2D input pose using the method proposed by [6], which additionally recovers camera parameters. We then project this mesh into the camera view to form
a silhouette mask SSMPL. The projection additionally gives
us a depth map ZSMPL(x), a normal map NSMPL(x) and a
skinning map WSMPL(x) for pixels x ∈ SSMPL. The skinning map is derived from the per-vertex skinning weights
in the SMPL model and is thus vector-valued at each pixel
(one skinning weight per bone)

You can literally get a mannequin or someone to pose for you in the outfit you wanna wear and then use the resulting mesh as clothing, throw the mesh into mixamo after decimation, and use a toon shader or whatever you want or just clean up the textures yourself by isolating a 2048x2048 square of the material pattern and using that.

In my experience, whether shadows look good heavily depends on your model. On most MMD models, it happens that heavy use of shadows looks worse, while a very subtle addition of shadows can in fact make it look better. If you want truly anime-tier shadows, you need to basically paint them on, or if you want dynamic shadows, somehow come up with a way to tell the game engine to use a set of baked shadows mapped around in 360 degrees for every angle that a light source can be placed (not sure if such a thing exists or not).

Oops kind of confusing there. To be more clear, I mean doing it kind of like Live2D Euclid, where the artist provides a drawing for a set number of angles and the engine kind of just interpolates between them.

>>239934061
no! you just need to use them right.
Noe's shader has Lit and Unlit versions.
Lit is the "main" version, it receives light from dynamic sources and light probes.
PS: using light probes allows you to have baked lights that still affect dynamic non-static meshes (like your avatar) if your shader supports it... like noe's and mtoon does.
You're probably not choosing the correct settings.
Unlit in noe's always appears at full brightness regardless of how the world is lit, don't use that.
"Lit transparent" is the most "pure" and complaint of noe's shader and makes it very close to mtoon, IF your materials and textures are correctly set up.
Here's what you need to pay attention to.
Dynamic Toon Lighting - will use any dynamic lights in the current world for shadowing, but worlds with only baked lighting will cause these shadows to disappear. To elaborate: This uses the TOON RAMP you provide to OVERRIDE the normal soft shadow that the in game REAL TIME or light probe dynamic lights provide, and instead place a directionally correct TOON shadow.
Static Toon Light is an alternative and works everywhere without light probes or realtime lights but it's a FAKE shadow, using the toon ramp and you'll be lit the same way no matter what room you're in, and that can suck on dark maps.

If you're using cutout transparency with an Opaque shader, change the render queue to 2450 if you have layered materials that need sorting.
Anonymous No.239935174 Replies: >>239935502

>come up with a way to tell the game engine to use a set of baked shadows mapped around in 360 degrees for every angle that a light source can be placed (not sure if such a thing exists or not).
that's literally what mtoon and noe's shader attempt to do in various ways by taking the lighting data and instead applying a toon ramp to that directional information.
see: >>239935009
>>239935174
unlit means the shader doesn't react to dynamic lighting, everything reacts to ambient directional lighting unless you have Toon Contrast and you set it to 0. Anything other than 0 BLENDS the realtime and directional dynamic lighting with fake lighting.
Anonymous No.239935693 Replies: >>239937542

it performs just fine compared to most. noe's is just VERY well performing because it's chopped into several versions that serve a purpose, but they opted to allow users to provide their own ramps instead of baking it in like mtoon does.
VRM makes a lot of things way easier for avatar bone and gesture remapping, and springbone performs a bit better than dynamicbone, thats all.
plus JP people love it and NND and crypton adopted it which means we would get better avatar tools if we had it natively, that's all.
it would also cement the anime look into vrchat.
Anonymous No.239936128 Replies: >>239936462

Noe with Lit just makes your whole model go darker but it doesn't actually 'make' shadows on your mesh
Anonymous No.239936338
>>239935381
also from what I understand dynamicbone's dev supports vrchat since they're making some money from the huge number of people who bought it for vrchat.
Did you know it's currently one of the most purchased asset packages on the entire unity market?
VRM is a completely open source format and avatar wrapper that uses GLTF, an arguably better performing mesh format.
But the main takeaway is that the springbone element, while not just being at least moderately (debatible) better performing on cpu calls than dynamicbone is, is COMPLETELY FREE. They would potentially sour their relationship with the dynamicbone people which I imagine they don't want to do, so instead, there's a push to have the dynamicbone code re-factored to cause less of a hit in vrchat.

That's all I know about it.

Hmm, not sure if I wasn't clear enough or you're saying they literally tried to do what I meant. Because that doesn't really get to the core idea of what makes 2D anime look like 2D anime and 3D look like 3D. And what I mean is that in the end there is no way to do true anime shading because anime shading doesn't use physics nor does it use any calculations that can be done by a computer (yet), so to emulate the same artstyle, we have to do the same thing as we do on a 2D plane, by literally drawing out each stroke of a brush by hand how the character should appear at different angles.

The bad thing is that stereoscopic vision artifacts and blending of a 2D element like a character's face with a 3D environment doesn't look great, at least how Live2D Euclid does it. I believe that perhaps we'll never get a true 2D anime look in VR, but perhaps a hybrid style that looks better than any MMD shader is still possible. To that end, I think the most significant limitation is how we do shadows currently, and I believe making hand drawn shadows in the way I described would probably work.

Then, in the future, we'll get to perfect AI rendering techniques and then we can just have magically anime looking vision.

ahh, I wonder if that map has no lighting probes or realtime.
You could try using something south or north of 0 for Shade LightColor Attenuation, and maybe give yourself a smidge of emission so you're more consistently lit in environments without a full stack lightmap.
Lots of people don't use lightprobes and reflection probes and just use reflection probes.

What people don't realize when making maps is that light probes allow for dynamic lighting in baked lighting environments without the huge cpu cost of realtime lights.
You just gotta pre-calculate them. Think of them as reflection probes for lightbeams.
Anonymous No.239938224
>>239937978
that's more the maps fault, and if they were using my settings there's zero emission. might need to blend the settings a bit to suit. >>239937981
what you want to do is make a cube in unity and stick your avatar in it and make a map similar to how maps in vrchat are made, then adjust the shader until it looks great with a variety of lighting settings.
or upload 2: one for properly lit maps like any of xiexe's or the pug, and 1 for everywhere else that isn't.

Works with the Player prefab in the Interactions_Example scene. All it does is translate/rotate a transform though, so should work with whatever. You have to set up "Move" and "Rotate" vector2 actions in the steamvr input window and bind them to joysticks or touchpads or whatever in the input mapping panels first, but otherwise it should work out of the box.

It's not exactly normals that are the problem per se, it's a problem of texel density consistency, or rather perceptual detail density. If the model itself already has inconsistency in density, then there might be no helping you unless you're comfortable doing texturing work, but if there is consistency then you should try to match that with whatever parts you're mixing together.

I like the way a nice finely tiled normal map looks on top clothes, especially with strong directional lighting. Same argument with flat lit vs shadows on anime models at all though. Some people think it looks too uncanny, I like the blend of realistic clothes, semirealistic skin, and very stylized face personally.

You're welcome. I'm not /agdg/, though I've lurked before. I just decided to branch out from doing purely vrchat stuff in unity today. Downloaded 2018.3, steamVR SDK, wanted something other than non-teleport movement.

My next goal is to try to glue an anime avatar onto the steamvr Player rig, basically a single-player vrchat recreation. I've slowly been trying to translate https://qiita.com/sh_akira/items/81fca69d6f34a42d261c , ran into the "not paying $90 for finalIK 1.8" issue. Currently I'm looking at https://github.com/dabeschte/VRArmIK as an alternative, and trying to understand how it works. It's got some very bizarre scripts in it, with no documentation.

As long as the entire model is using the same flat lighting, that's an ok beginner avatar, though not ideal.
>using a sharp toon ramp with a dark shadow
That can be pretty bad but it might be OK on some models.
>using a toon ramp on skin that's gray instead of a darker shade of flesh tone
It can look fine in some cases. Some models actually do look pretty good that way. Most don't though so yeah, please use a subtle and colored ramp instead of grey tones.

Because I can use poiyomi's ridiculous amount of shader variables to randomly black-screen people on world load.
Real answer is I don't spend too much time worry about the perfect shader and lighting settings for every map.
But again, we do need to stop using poiyomi's shader because it is apparently coded like hot-garbage and is at fault for one of the annoying issues we've noticed over the past couple months.

The main issue is that most modellers don't know to make normals for anime models correctly. You need to know how to do it the way the Guilty Gear developers do it for it to look okay with a sharp ramp. I don't know how to do it either, I'd love to know how their method works.

Here's a screenshot from a while back, trying out reflex shader. The UVs aren't great on the blazer, and it's not even the right normal map for the fabric, but if you look closely, it the slight texture really helps break the "plastic" smooth look that the shader has otherwise.

This only really works in the editor view though. I found it's almost impossible to see in VR unless you crank up the scale a lot, and even then the lighting on most vrchat maps is too uniform to show it off. I'll keep tweaking it.

Only a few shaders have a slot for a "detail normal map" though, which is necessary for this effect. standard does, reflex does, silent's cubed edit does (pic related), I think xiexe does too.

How does normal mapping require an extra pass? It's just a few texture samples in the fragment shader.

Here's a real new meme though, a reflection probe sample on the eye material. Looks pretty cool in game, kyoani-tier shiny eyes. Here it's using arktoon with smoothness cranked up, standard is probably fine too. The eye mesh is actually concave from the original model (for optical illusion eye tracking reasons), but once I fix that, I think I could even replace those fake static eye highlights with the right fallback HDR cubemap, which arktoon supports if there's no reflection probe in the scene.

You're right, they're actually going in and changing the mesh significantly, to make some of the mesh react to lighting and other mesh groups not to. Essentially there's bundles of doubled (and not) double sided normals as mesh groups that have varied material properties like receive shadows or not, specular or not. It's just meshgroups and layered materials in the end. Z transparency and multiple material layers allows for a lot of this.
Like how for example there's two uv groups for the same mesh group here with various transparency levels that differ to do subsurface scattering, a sense of depth, and semi transparency in some places on this one.

oh, you can also use stencil mask shaders to prevent light from hitting certain areas if you don't want it to, for example.
There's a few ways to slice that pie. Even with Noe's you can configure the ramp so that even when you're Lit and receiving light, you can prevent being lit from the front and back for example and only cast shadows on the sides.

install shaderforge and play around. Frag, vertex, normals, camera depth, all of these things can be used to change the way things are presented or to draw new graphics on top of existing ones.
Where it gets special is when you have subshaders, instancing, and then the surf function.
here's a starting point, for example With the visual tools you don't need to see these variables as much, but usually it starts something like this:

Properties {
_Color ("Color", Color) = (1,1,1,1)
_MainTex ("Albedo (RGB)", 2D) = "white" {}
_Glossiness ("Smoothness", Range(0,1)) = 0.5
_Metallic ("Metallic", Range(0,1)) = 0.0
_MainNormal ("MainNormal", 2D) = "bump" {}

[Header(Moss info)]
_MossTexture("Moss texture", 2D) = "white" {}
_MossNormal("Moss normal", 2D) = "bump" {}
_MossColor("Moss color", color) = (1,1,1,1)
_MossDirection ("Moss direction", Vector) = (0, 1, 0)
_MossLevel ("Moss level", Range(-1, 1)) = 0
_MossGlossiness("Moss glossiness", Range(0, 1)) = 0.5
_MossMetallic ("Moss Metallic", Range(0,1)) = 0.0
}

You're setting variables and ranges (these are the sliders). These variables allow you to screw with things, and then you use some effects to "grab" what's there and modify it's appearance visually, like:

void surf (Input IN, inout SurfaceOutputStandard o) {
//Color and normals of the main textures
fixed4 c = tex2D (_MainTex, IN.uv_MainTex) * _Color;
float3 normals = UnpackNormal (tex2D(_MainNormal, IN.uv_MainNormal));
//Color and normals of the moss textures
fixed4 mossColor = tex2D(_MossTexture, IN.uv_MossTexture) * _MossColor;
float3 MossNormals = UnpackNormal(tex2D(_MossNormal, IN.uv_MossNormal));
//Moss direction calculation
half MossDot = step(_MossLevel, dot(WorldNormalVector(IN, normals), normalize(_MossDirection)));

now keep in mind most of this is lifted from a different snow shader. What you would do instead is switch moss color to something green, the direction to be (1, 0, 0) instead (on the right, or use a variable for north).

then finally
o.Normal = lerp(normals, mossNormals, mossDot);
o.Albedo = lerp(c.rgb, mossColor.rgb, mossDot);
o.Metallic = lerp(_Metallic, _mossMetallic, mossDot);
o.Smoothness = lerp(_Glossiness, _mossGlossiness, mossDot);
o.Alpha = c.a;

https://github.com/supyrb/ConfigurableShaders is useful for messing with stencil and ztest stuff. You can copy and paste the blocks into properties/pass into any existing shader and it'll let you twiddle them in the inspector.

Anonymous No.239958517
>>239957956

A simple way to figure out if a shader is optimized is if it's generating additional draw calls on the mesh.
Making single sided normals doubled? Extra draw call.
Shader has multiple starting properties that converge into a final output? possible draw call for each.
Shader loops back on itself for a second grab pass of it's first or parallel effect? Many more draw calls.
Also some other things increase the work the gpu/cpu has to do, like tessellation, or computation, etc.

All that being said compared to all the other things shaders are decent performers.
One thing I haven't seen yet is a cuda gpu shader on someone's AVATAR instead of a particle effect, but that has the downside of possibly being desynced between players.
Compute shaders work a bit like tiny programs and can do things that you only dreamed of being able to do with proper scripting support in some ways.

try this. I know you can't upload the .cs utility, but the .compute and .shader will probably work once you've configured them, I would imagine.
If not, I know it's entirely possible using a vertex gpu compute shader. Just like with the magic wand map, instead of having the "particles" be detached, have them attached.
It's how unity's cloth physics system works as well, it just creates psudo vertexes along a plane and computes them.
Speaking of unity cloth, it should actually be pretty fucking performance light compared to dynamic bone if the hair or cloth you wanna animate is under 200 verts or so, and requires no actual bones on the mesh to work.. plus it looks like actual cloth instead of a rubber band.

this one does indeed. I've played with it before but you could get a similar effect with a motion ramp on a dissolve vertex and frag:

Shader "Custom/Dissolve" {
Properties {
_Color ("Color", Color) = (1,1,1,1)
_MainTex ("Albedo (RGB)", 2D) = "white" {}
_SliceGuide("Slice Guide (RGB)", 2D) = "white" {}
_SliceAmount("Slice Amount", Range(0.0, 1.0)) = 0

_BurnSize("Burn Size", Range(0.0, 1.0)) = 0.15
_BurnRamp("Burn Ramp (RGB)", 2D) = "white" {}
_BurnColor("Burn Color", Color) = (1,1,1,1)

_EmissionAmount("Emission amount", float) = 2.0
}
SubShader {
Tags { "RenderType"="Opaque" }
LOD 200
Cull Off
CGPROGRAM
#pragma surface surf Lambert addshadow
#pragma target 3.0

fixed4 _Color;
sampler2D _MainTex;
sampler2D _SliceGuide;
sampler2D _BumpMap;
sampler2D _BurnRamp;
fixed4 _BurnColor;
float _BurnSize;
float _SliceAmount;
float _EmissionAmount;

struct Input {
float2 uv_MainTex;
};

void surf (Input IN, inout SurfaceOutput o) {
fixed4 c = tex2D (_MainTex, IN.uv_MainTex) * _Color;
half test = tex2D(_SliceGuide, IN.uv_MainTex).rgb - _SliceAmount;
clip(test);

if (test < _BurnSize && _SliceAmount > 0) {
o.Emission = tex2D(_BurnRamp, float2(test * (1 / _BurnSize), 0)) * _BurnColor * _EmissionAmount;
}

o.Albedo = c.rgb;
o.Alpha = c.a;
}
ENDCG
}
