VR is a really interesting additional nail in an ever growing coffin in my former field.

you can still gesture even without a model for hands, it's no problem. all a gesture is is a no time limit animation .anim file tied to a specific part of the touchpad or oculus touch controller.
keep in mind that if you change some parts of your face that do blink/mouth you might get some weird shapekey things happening but since you don't have hands I bet that's not your goal.

I posted a series of screencaps from a thread on facebook where a fucking shitton of a small subsection of vrchat players ended up hooking up for real, WAY more than any other mmo I've ever seen, even accounting for ventrilo/mumble/discord/voicechat enabled games.

It's MASSIVELY statistically anomalous if you extrapolate the data to the entire player base.
If I had to guess it's because VRChat is the closest thing to meeting at a bar in the real world that exists in this world, right now.
It's weird to consider the fact that VR IS the most immersive medium that exists and the closest thing we have to real life that isn't actually real life.
It's way above video chat even without the RL appearance aspect, it's surprising.
I would even venture to say that meeting a real sex partner, even a heterosexual one, is easier in vrchat than anywhere else you can do that on the internet if you don't live in a major city center and use something like tinder.
And the relationships formed in the protective bubble of vrchat will likely be more meaningful.

it's not hard to add bones to an armature that do nothing in blender. Here's a mostly automated way literally off the top of my head.
You will need cat's blender plugin.
The easiest way to do it is to import two models in cat's blender plugin, yours and a humanoid. (I recommend using xbot from adobe mixamo for maximum compatibility). and run "fix model" on both.
next, you select the mesh (not the armature) for the humanoid avatar on the right, press tab for edit mode, then press A to select all.
then press delete to delete all the -verts- (you'll get a popup.)
next, got to custom model creation and merge the two models, do material combiner and atlas so your model is low load, and export the model.
then set it up in vrchat sdk.

this is also, incidentally, how you frankenstein things. It's pretty easy.

If that's so, why isn't there a way to basically do the same thing but map the position of a particle to an entire bone instead of a vertex? I mostly agree with that, but also think another reason as to why this 3rd type easily grows is because of how much easier it is for many men to get along with other men, initially having no sexual urges messing their intentions and making them act different as well. However because these guys use female avatars which are usually attractive in one way or another the person eventually no longer explicitly sees them as male, then combined with the positive friendly relationship they already have with them their mind begins to warp what they feel. Kind of like two really close pre-pubescent male and female friends that grow up together who after puberty don't necessarily have conscious romantic feelings to one another and see them as a good friend still, but those thoughts and feelings are there and just need to be pushed out into the open in some way, which happens easily in already adult communities.

Cloth can be AS efficient if done right, and look WAY better than dynamicbone.
downside is you need a seperate mesh (which could be worse. Dynamicbones is worse.) and ideally a VERY low poly mesh. You could make a very accurate skirt by literally using 4 different single sided 1 face meshes for the front back and sides, and it would look so much better and clothlike.

Cloth physics uses physx to do the simulation, which occurs on the GPU or at least off-thread on the CPU, instead of C# code in an Update() method like dynamic bones. Thus, you can simulate more unique vertices and colliders for less per-frame overhead.

However, cloth is still limited to simulating... cloth, i.e. thin, separate meshes, not parts of a traditional weighted armature. It's not a theoretical limitation, it's just what the unity cloth component does currently. I'm sure you could also use physx to simulate bone chains to be better than the current dynamic bones script, but you'll need to implement that yourself, then convince vrchat devs to whitelist your "dynamic bones but better™" script. Until then, saying "cloth physics is better than dynamic bones" is like saying "oranges are better than apples". You can't just swap one for the other wholesale and expect the same effect but faster.

you might want to look into drawing a very simple mesh for it and using the same texture the original dress had.
I suggest looking into how simple retopology works with "attach to mesh geometry" or what is referred to as "shrink wrapping" here.
if you can approximate the shape of the dress in a simple with with as few poly as possible, cloth will take care of the rest, hyper efficiently, more so than dynamicbone because of the way dynamicbone is built.
FWIW, vrchat team is working with dynamicbone to optimize a codepass.
springbone can be both ever so slightly more efficient or WAY more efficient than dynamicbone depending on how you set it up, but it runs in a single simulation too, since it's more modern. lots of collision can make it slightly inefficient but changing the simulation sample rate to be a bit more sane for realtime stuff fixes that. (same goes with cloth, btw. Try to use as few virtual particles as possible and it'll blow dynamic bone out of the water.)

On topic though chronic loneliness is a huge problem in modern society and vr is one of those things that has more effects on the brain other than what is presented. It's illusory qualities are something to behold and go a lot further than the already strange phantom senses. At the end of the day we are still apes with ape brains and have not significantly altered since the dawn of our races. We have so many hard wired thought patterns that are so innate to us that we don't even think about them. One in particular I've noticed is the assumption of sex based on appearance. There are lots of people in /vrg/ that I call she despite knowing they're not. That fact that it is automatic means there is something in my brain that says feminine = female that 3d traps don't trigger but /vrg/'s more proteus'd do. Then you get all those other things like desire to reproduce and cognitive dissonance and suddenly you want a vrfu. Linking this back to the problem of loneliness, vr is being used as a method of connecting people vividly to each other while not actually meeting anyone. The loneliness is treated but not cured. I'm sure there are plenty of people (like me) that have no friends outside of vr or acquaintances from work. What kind of effects is this having on us? We don't even really understand how loneliness even works to begin with, let alone cognition. Yet we have this tool and we are using it, unintentionally, to cure a problem. Maybe in the future we'll look back on vr like we do desanguination, trepanning, and leeches.

Why explore outer space when you can simulate it exactly? If it's fundamentally the same, there's no reason to actually go there. I'd believe it though each particle has a limit to how much information it possess or can store so in order to simulate the universe 1:1 you'd need to have a computer at least the size of the universe so I'd immediately disregard that possibility. one thing I've noticed, starting at the beginning on 2018 and staying on vrchat pretty consistently is that a lot of vrchat is the people that society outcasts or lays outside - who come on here seeking out a cure for the lonliness and who lack social skills. you need to seperate the model by materials first.
Simply select your dress mesh you wanna keep. The only downside to cloth is that you need to have two skinned mesh renderers but that's generally ok.
Delete the meshes you don't want or need after. You can keep the vertex groups and bones if you want but they just won't do anything. It's better to delete them and rely on ONE or two capsule colliders on your hips rather than two or three for cloth physics opposed to what the video I posted earlier suggests (his method works good for boy avatars.)
if you hold ctrl and select just the bottom half of the dress you can duplicate the mesh parts you want to move and make that a separate skinned mesh and avoid needing a capsule for the hips entirely to "freeze" the top half. Experiment!

incorrect. Solver frequency is per second. Reduce that and you can get it WAY beyond the performance of dynamicbone. Plus it's threaded, dynamicbone uses a Update() method and unity cloth does not.
All we need to do is bring up the profiler and figure out the most efficient settings and we can kill dynamicbone at least until they refactor it to play nice in vrchat.

Does anyone know roughly how much data is sent per second for each tracked object in VRchat? I'm assuming it's tiny but my internet is so shit I wanna make sure getting full body wont just be a waste of cash by constantly getting me disconnected.
Also is it worth it to just get feet tracking or does shit get real weird without hip tracking? I have to save a while if thats the case.

I play the role of both a therapist and life coach to a lot of my irl friends who keep coming back to me because I somehow can dissect personalities pretty easily(Pretty sure I got gud by studying propaganda). The thing I am actually mostly worried about when it comes to this stuff is how it affects the individuals, straight up everyone here has some form of mental problem, VR can help quite a bit with some of them, mostly for those with social issues. At the same it can actually reinforce their issues and make it more difficult to move on from them, VR is an escape from physical reality, but that is the only true reality and true escape is impossible but people try anyway, this can make them more happy now but it's very possible and quite likely to cause serious shit in the future if they become too deluded as to what is real by being stuck in a happy world where they can do and be whatever they want. I love VR and spend most of my free time in it, but people putting tying too much of their personality, emotions and even base human impulses like sex to a world that could literally dissapear in an instant is not safe, I really just want people to have fun and be happy but not get too involved. Maybe one day if the VR population increases massiveley, their is a much more supportive infrastructure + overall economy and stuff becomes Oasis tier it might be more acceptable, but in its early stages totally subverting a real life for a virtual on is dangerous.
