So my fucking cat chewed through the cables on my Samsung Odyssey. I'm thinking of replacing it with an Odyssey+ but I've also been looking at the Rift-S. I've heard controller tracking on the Rift-S is better than most WMR headsets which is tempting, but it'd cost me an extra $100 and I don't have any experience using the Rift-S. I've only got about a $500 budget. What would you recommend, /vrg/?

i'd check out possible USB issues, those devices are magical when it comes to usb stuff. i remember there were some usb host modules that had issues with oculus, and you had to install a different driver for the usb host device thingy. make sure your usb has enough bandwidth (no three different high bandwidth devices in other ports), and also make sure it's up to whatever standard rift s demands it to be (3.0, 3.1, whatnot. obvious stuff, but i guess it's smart to double check)

I dunno man, I've tried just about everything at this point. Reinstalled all the drivers, put Oculus on a second hard drive, tried all sorts of orders and configurations of USB devices. Windows can see the Rift USB as 'USB audio device' but Oculus still doesn't see it at all, let alone the display port.

It sounds like they're just ignoring any part of your animations that change the transforms of your hands/fingers, but the rest of the animation will play if your actual hand pose is close enough to the predefined pose (victory, rock n roll, thumbs up, fingergun, point, fist). Or if you just turn off their gesture toggle system then your animations won't play, but your fingers will still just match what the knuckles say.

Back before VRChat got the "safety" system that regulated particles and content, I created a particle system that used "is trigger" collision logic and sub-emitters, along with state machines like the "prop-toggle" inventory system to interact with a sprite sheet of words instead of writing things with a trail renderer because I didn't know how to make a marker shader. As far as i know, the oculus quest does not have usb tethering .
I just used a wired connection from my Router to PC , but pc to quest is still wireless, but there is so little compression and latency that it's good enough for non competitive games. If you can get a hotspot between a wired pc and a quest, no doubt it'll be better

I'm in Love with the Oculus Rift S.

I'm coming from an HP windows Mixed Reality Headset, so keep in mind I'm very used to inside-out tracking.
This thing is AWESOME! I can put my hands down at my sides without losing tracking! I can fire guns in Pavlov and Rec Room without jitter making my aim look like a 75-year-old suffering from the early stages of parkinson's! I can even play Beat Saber now! I thought I sucked at it, but it was really just my old headset's crappy tracking. I'm actually kinda decent at it. It's crazy fun.
And don't even get me started on how great things look with this headset. There's almost no screen door effect. I could read the text in Elite Dangerous perfectly. It was pretty much perfect. I have zero complaints. I can't wait to load down Skyrim VR with crap tons of 4k texture mods and model improvements. Not to mention I haven't even tried some of my favorite VR games yet. (Mostly Poker Stars and Catch & Release.)
I'm pretty sure I'm going to regret my 13+ hour session since I have to work 7am to 4pm today (It's 5am for me right now, so that means no sleep for me until I get home,) but I honestly don't care. I feel fantastic. I haven't had this much fun since my honeymoon!
Rec Room paintball seems to be my favorite so far, but I have a feeling I'll enjoy the hell out of Onward once I buy it. Pavlov is awesome, but I like slower FPS games than what Pavlov offers.
I know a lot of people are having trouble with their Rift S, but I guess I'll throw my pebble into the pond and say everything's working perfectly for me. I'd honestly say more than perfect at this point.

Basically, I could play on Normal, but if the headset needed to see a wide swing that came outside of its normal range, it would freak out a bit and jitter more than usual sometimes. Maybe like every fifth swing?

It didn't ruin the game for me, but I really didn't think I'd be able to pull off hard or expert songs.

I enjoyed my time with my HP headset. It was fun, and I'm happy that it was my first headset, but the Rift S blows it so far out of the water it might as well be considered pic related.

FBT stuff: as far as i see it, i can use any steamvr-compatible motion controller as my legs as long as i can map it as vive devices of higher id (unity plugin had 16 of the max). You will need bluetooth adapter for your PC, turn on your toy and it will be added automatically in connected toys list.
Launch SteamVR, in "Controller setup" tab choose actions for specific controller buttons. Different toys have different actions avaible, you can control them separately. Some buttons have analogue value (not just on/off), you can control power level precisely with these. Controls disabled when steam dashboard is open.
There four modes of control avaible:
- Local: control your own toys
- Remote: control remote user(s) toys
- Two-way: you controls remote toys and remote user controls yours
- Synchronize: control remote and your own toys at same time

Well shit, I might end up getting a Quest after all whenever they have a sale. I got two ethernet ports on my PC, so I could just use the spare to wire the headset directly to it. Only issue is I'd still limited by the battery life of the device unless it can handle charging + the wired connection off the single USB-C port via splitter.

Don't get into VR unless you've got the cash to blow. I have money to burn so I just bought an HTC Vive a couple weeks ago (the Vive Pro is actually for commercial purposes, there is zero (0) reason to get a Vive Pro if it's for your own home use exclusively).
