The lighthouse system is openly specified, https://hivetracker.github.io/ is one effort to make a custom tracker. For room mapping, you can get the video stream from the two cameras, but it's up to you to do whatever computer vision algorithm for photogrammetry and match that with the poses of the headset from lighthouse. The only true con we are certain of right now is the Quest can be an uncomfortable piece of shit to wear for long periods; I always come away with 'tired' eyes and a sore brow no matter how I adjust the straps. As to the actual visuals of the games coming down the cable; people are rightly skeptical, but they are claiming some technical voodoo where the difference might not even be noticable to the untrained eye. Time will tell; but a lot of this sounds like them just trying to outright tank their Rift S sales going forwards and to avoid people trying on lawsuits or mass refunds. From everything we are hearing it sounds like they have legitimately invented software and techniques to get around the issues people are bringing up with their methods. They wouldn't have let it dominate most of their show and news if they weren't sure it would stick the landing.

It's put me in an awkward place. My rig can be ready by early next month. But, with this cable not coming out til November, with potential to immedietly sell out and be weeks of backorders, I'm going to have to hold off on my PCVR until we know for sure. The comfort of the Rift S and lesser screen door sounds fucking appealing. Just not an extra 400 buckaroos of appealing when I already own a Quest and there is a cable due out that can allegedly turn it into an S-Lite with bonus features and continued support. Because one thing is for sure, this has basically shouted from the rooftop that 98% of their focus is on the Quest, and Rift S just exists.

I don't think anyone knows specifics about the encoding beyond what was shown. It gave me the impression that it was GPU accelerated as it's more than just changing the form of the video output. There's some distortion and other similar effects around the edge of each image to simplify some of the data being sent. Similar methods are used to reduce GPU load in VR so that might mean it's GPU based.

And really the point here isn't that all these features exist yet or not, but that they will exist. The ideal is the Oasis, everyone knows that. It's not just a hub unto itself, but also a container for a lot of other hubs and, really, everything you can experience, including games both within its engine, or games outside, as they are already including that "deep linking" functionality. So it doesn't really matter what form it's in now, not really. Before Horizon, they were experimenting with Rooms, Spaces, Home, etc, and now they're all scrapped and centralizing into Horizon, which may or may not eventually be replaced with another better thing, or may or may not be updated to include all functions needed. But, in the state it's expected to launch in, it could already be a Rec Room killer, assuming that the games in there by default are good enough or people come on quickly and create funner things like an actual FPS in it, which should be possible.

So it sounds to me like you're implying here that all Horizon does or is meant to do is "let people interact with each other", which, considering the features, are hardly scratching the surface of what it could let people do. So that's partly why I'm skeptical of your assertions.

As for VRChat being a 4chan equivalent, sure, it was great random meme fun that was able to be successful especially with Twitch. Horizon is targeting a different audience and ultimately should grow into or be replaced by an application that's more like Internet Explorer where it's the container and tool used to access the entire metaverse that no one actually controls. Facebook's world might be the default home page like Google is for Chrome, but they don't get the say on what users want to do after that, because otherwise, they simply would use other apps by that time that do allow the essential functionality of a generic metaverse "browser" that we expect to be there. Facebook is not and will not be the only competitor.

So we have to look at this whole thing in the long term, not just the short term which won't be as exciting but could still be valuable for some people in a different way than other apps like VRChat have been so far.

Anywhere you go in game and anything you'll see including props have been all created and modeled in the in game editor. It offers a fair amount of creative freedom allowing you to do pretty much anything you can think of with geometric primitives, and if you wanted more control anyways it even has a basic mesh editor. In any case it's been about a year since the last Anyland meetup so I'm looking forward to seeing if anymore worlds or features have been added since then. Looks like it might have even gotten a full IK system. So it's a leg ahead of this FB Horizon thing.

One of my main hobbies is ron hacking. A lot of of the tools used in some games are pretty old and dont work on 10. I also know 7 like the back of my hand and would rather not have to relearn a desktop enviroment.
Theres also the privacy issue, and 10 is pretty damn bloated.

I use a tight velcro strap mid center of the back of my headset and pull out enough cable to have a small loop hang in the air by me. Quest vs S at the moment kinda feels like the S owners got boned but a lot of features being promo'd on the quest will eventually come to the S, likely in a more refined form. You absolutely will see finger tracking etc on S.
Then don't forget it is more comfortable to wear for longer periods of time, has better tracking, a slightly better screen and other slight QoL improvements over the Quest.
Even if the S stays where it is right now I don't think you've been screwed, it's the better PCVR device than the quest.

I myself do not own an S but you shouldn't be getting too down over it.

I don't know of any arcade driving games that would benefit from a wheel. Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator should be comfier though if you don't want to race. Slower cars on modded tracks for real roads in Assetto might help you get used to it. PCars doesn't have real roads as far as I know, but starting with slower cars should help there too. Either way, if your only problem with racing sims is that being bad at them, I wouldn't worry about it. You'll get better with some practice.
