So Onward actually has flashlights and laser sights that turn on with your off-hand trigger. Something that makes them actually useful because they're easy to turn on and off.
It also has C4 with the cool remotes (which I think are fucked if you choose to operate items with the trigger), it also has canted sights now, and a few custom close quarters maps.
Objectives are still fucked, because it's like a retarded de_/S&D mode, but I think this game deserves a second chance, it reminds me of Hostile Intent in a way.

Onward's fault is that because you can't sim felt recoil, they translated all of it to muzzle flip
you get solid 15-30 degree rise with some of the guns and it looks and feels retarded, just because you can't really properly sim good recoil without the kinetic factor being introduced as well
Recoil patterns are dumb but they take that lack of felt recoil and translate it into it's own little minigame, although even if that were removed and Pavlov's recoil were simplified, the actual visual aspect of Pavlov's recoil dabs on Onward by a lot

My main problem with Onward is how they design it to be as unfun as possible. Contractors too, but in a different way.
In Onward, the main game mode is fundamentally fucking broken from fun perspective, it's like taking S&D, slapping a 6 minute timer on it, removing one bombsite and giving the bomb 0 second timer after you punch in the code that's twice as long and you need to memorize the code beforehand or have someone read it to you (good luck with that).
I see what they were going in for, but it's absolutely impossible to have fun on public servers without coordination.
One team camp and holds angles (which isn't all that hard when there's only one small place to protect), the other inches for 5 minutes and tries to pick off any bored enemies that started to roam and flank.

Or is 2D spacemens as a concept too hard to translate into VR? I guess in terms of design it'd be best to start from the ground up and see how far you can push the complexity from there, something all the "dude SS13 remake" people don't seem to get. Guns, basic health system, some kind of engineering autism, work from there.

Come to think of it, there's a lot of individual bits of spacemens that'd be really cool to do in VR.
