Is VR actually a meme? It's impossible to get most of /vrg/ to play anything but VRchat. Some will reluctantly play other games occasionally, if it doesn't interrupt something else. The excuse with Pavlov is that it is low quality and they'll only play when the official CS comes out, or there's Quake or Battlefield or whatever, but will they actually?

Beat Saber is probably the best possible execution of a rhythm game in gen 1 VR, but the rhythm game players in /vrg/ won't touch it. "it's not a rhythm game" because it doesn't have a specific score for timing, despite having a three dimensional scoring system of length/angle/precision, with length essentially being a function of time. Are they seriously going to pick it up if the scoring system was changed in such a way that it would essentially affect nothing at all? I doubt it.

Flat games have cancelled even VRchat meetups for weeks at times, but in the past two years, the only VR game that has come close to doing the same is the shoddy No Man's Sky port. Everything else is forgotten almost immediately. Half Life Alyx will go the same way, I imagine. Is there really a problem with ~400 people not having the specific game they want to play in VR, or is there actually a fundamental issue with the effort it requires to play in VR? I'm starting to suspect it's just going to gradually be forgotten and in ten years a dedicated few will still be playing the same games.

/vg/ generals just don't work for short single player games. There's nothing there to discuss. That leaves multiplayer games with lots of replayability, which means shooters and MMORPGs. There are other multiplayer games that we don't talk about much or play very often, because they have a player cap of 4 people. It's incredibly difficult to get a single game of Bridge Crew or Iron Wolf going here, not because no one cares, but because not enough people can play at one time to be worth it. You can be 6 billion tonnes of lard and still play CS at a competitive level but if you can't swing your arms for 20 minutes or even fucking stand up for an hour then you're fucked for vr. Both. VR games just requires more effort to play than flat ones. It gets hot and sweaty and it's not as easy to shitpost or watch youtube videos while occasionally playing them.
Pavlov may be trash in many ways but there's a good reason it's still the most played multiplayer game here besides VRChat; It supports high playercounts in multiplayer so anyone can join, has a decent competitive gamemode that's easy to understand and for a long time was fairly cheap. Most multiplayer VR games don't have the same accessibility and low barrier to entry. As more games come out that actually manage to match these factors we'll probably see them get played too.

Alright anons, it is time for some of that good old fashioned I slept until about 3:30pm because my body and mind demand rest from the painful existence! Third: The Odyssey plus IPD slider does not go narrow enough for my eyes, at least thats how it felt just having it on. I heard about digital IPD adjustment, how much could that actually help? I tried looking around online but it seems like all headsets are the around the same minimum IPD so I dont believe I got much of a hope until someone gets one out in the low 50mm range.

Nothing officially supports anything but 10 anymore, and Microsoft is dropping support soon too. As far as I know, everything but WMR still works on 7 though, but I wouldn't buy a new headset just for that since you have no guarantee things will keep working.
You might be able to get your headset working on LTSC if you want as little botnet as possible, and any other headset would definitely work there.
Vive and Index also technically have Linux support, but most games don't work with it, so it's not really worth trying.

I don't think you can truly solve the way a VR headset isolates you from the real world and that will limit when it becomes desirable to use. That can be an appealing niche at times but not in others. Hopefully the software improves enough that casually playing a game while shitposting and watching youtube videos can be done nearly as fluidly as on a desktop. The hardest part is just the Hair and the Clothes, but there are tutorials on that, plus probably find presets you can download.
Fruitpex has a youtube channel that shows the basic stuff, and also how to convert it to VRChat.
Took me around 2 days, but that was just me messing around making it better and what not.
In reality I got it in VRChat the same day I started messing with VRoid and it worked fine.

Why the fuck do I feel like shit playing Boneworks?!

This is so frustrating. I've been anticipating the game for years. It was an easy selling point for me to get the Valve Index, which I did. Prior to Boneworks coming out I was playing multiple games with no side effects at all. Pavlov, Blade and Sorcery, Onward VR, Compound, Hotdogs Horseshoes and Handgrenades + countless other games and software for over 1 + hours at a time with the headset on. Boneworks however, I start feeling whoozy within minutes of playing and the feeling of vomiting persists after I quit out of the game. What the fuck. This is some bullshit. Literally the only game and my most hyped game in all of VR does that to me.

Overpriced yeah. The problem with developing stuff for vr is that there are essentially 4 sets of controllers - vive, rift, wmr, and index. WMR has the lowest market share, vive and rift have the biggest, and index seems to be the enthusiast market with extra bells and whistles like finger tracking. Although they are the best priced headsets, WMR notoriously has poor controls support for vr games and basically everything you have to use custom workshop control schemes. You'll have to bite the bullet and get either rift of vive if you're going to be a dev just for ease of making control schemes for the mass market.

Quest is capable of being a PC VR headset with a single USB cable (the official one they sell is expensive but also longer and more flexible than what you can usually get). It depends on what you want to do with VR. Since you say you want to be a dev, Quest is probably the more flexible device, as you can do both mobile, wireless experiences, with leap motion style finger tracking, and you can do wired PC experiences. The tracking and controller inputs on Quest is also better than all current WMR, so you'll be less limited in the type of interactions you can program.

I decided to try out sleeping in a public world on VRChat for the first time last night but was disappointed that I didn't wake up to the site of a random user molesting or raping me. That was the first impression I had when switching to Index. I looked at the desk in the gun range in H3VR and it looked like it did in a dev video, instead of like a different VR version. Same with seeing my avatar in VRC, it looked like the Unity version. It's not as high resolution as a monitor, but the distinct gap between the pixels isn't there.

FOV is 'wider I guess' but it's not enough to ever be noticeable.

I also switched back to rift CV1 after finally rma'ing the shitty controllers. I definitely miss the resolution of the index. Playing stuff like beat saber, the rift is still fine, but squinting at text in oculus dash, you can see the SDE pretty clearly. Also dropping to 90hz from 144hz is noticable though obviously not as critical as the resolution. Things just feel less smooth.

However, I was still impressed by the colors and contrast of the rift. OLED really shines here. Also, I honestly can't tell the difference in fov. the index is theoretically bigger and I do have the lens relief cranked down to minimum. I think the index just isn't a big enough difference for my brain to treat it any different than binoculars still. Never tried a larger fov headset like the pimax.

God rays are about the same, probably feels brighter in the rift because of OLED contrast. The headset is way lighter like >>277217149 says, and so are the controllers. it's a comfy headset.

here's going to be my aimless ramble comparing them

getting back into occulus home to compare the rift fov to the index's fov (It's adjustable but I cant imagine a normal shaped person having the lenses any closer)

If you stand in the back left corner of the room (if you are looking at it from the balcony) then turn to face the room in the rift you can look in such a way as not to see either of the walls to your left or right

On index you do see the walls, genuinely it feels very minor

Rift's face foam in comparison now kind of feels like cheap walmart trash, as well as the headphone foam, the index as far as what you feel on your skin is immensely more comfortable, but as mentioned because of the weight and bulk of the index it kind of comes to a draw comfort wise, aside from a pressure on my face I really don't feel the display of the rift

I don't like the index controllers at all and would use my rift controllers instead if I could, the straps, bulkiness of the controllers combined with the bulky headset make removing or putting them on a bit of a hassle if you ever have an itch to scratch or something

The rift in comparison just feels very light, and i don't mean just the weight, it feels casual, I can pop it on pop it off in a second, effortlessly, and it's not that the index is "hard" it's just "more" it feels very heavy and involved in the same sense

Oleds vs lcd honestly I don't mind the look of the lcd greys over oled blacks but that may just be a personal preference thing, I find the SDE much more distracting

Refresh rate never noticed much of a difference

Index controllers are chargeable batteries which is good because they don't seem to last long at all

Build quality in general feels much better on the index, the cable is fuckin ridiculous compared to the rifts

Steam VR feels leagues behind occulus software, kind of shockingly so in fact, I think there is a big steam vr update bringing it more in line with occulus? Not sure but-

The ability for occulus to have multiple desktop screens of whatever size at whatever angle and any distance as well as a decent VR keyboard is very handy and something I sorely miss, especially playing VR chat.

I don't like that I have to spend 11 dollars on third party software to get even similar functionality so i can watch stuff while laying down.

Mic and audio are of course much better on index, the index in general as a headset is an across the board upgrade specification wise, but man that bulky weight, you feel it.

The first week or so I had it I was scared because I genuinely could not get it to be comfortable, though I'm slowly getting accustom to it.

That's all I can really think of right now, if you are sitting here with an og rift and thinking "should I spend 1k on an index" I would say only if you really want that extra clarity, and the ability to buy vive/valve hardware like leg trackers without janky work arounds.

Little sidenote, I've noticed I have "moments of clarity" with my index, where Ill see a scene and realize "This looks very clear" and it's pleasant
