The index finger tracking is nowhere near good enough to add to the immersion (or gameplay for that matter) in anything. The index is fairly comfortable, but it's also pretty heavy at least compared to the original rift cv1. I have heard that the Rift S has shit audio, so you'll want to factor in having to wear headphones/earbuds.

If you need it soon, the index is sold out for at least another few months so Rift S is still the most immediate option.

Dwarf fortress in VR.

Yes it's as janky as it looks. It's this project https://github.com/JapaMala/armok-vision which scrapes the memory of the original game and renders it in 3d with unity. You have to run the exe with `-vrmode openvr` for it to work, then it's just keyboard controls, no VR.

As awful as it looks, with some polish like two-handed controls for grabbing and scaling the world, I bed it could actually be pretty comfy. Have the original game window up in an overlay for manipulation, otherwise just watching your dwarf dollhouse/anthill in VR.

Maximum best immersion so far I've had for VRChat has been Oculus Quest with ALVR wireless pcvr, 4 Index base stations and 3 Vive trackers all in a big room. I've had Vive Pro wireless and Index to compare to.

In comparison Vive Pro wireless is very bulky to wear while having comparable visuals, audio and mic to Quest but with less latency. Index on the other hand has mostly superior visuals with a bit washed out colors and gray blacks but in much higher resolution and field of view. The audio and microphone on the Index are much superior too. However the Index is wired and that really gets in the way if you're actually active in your big room walking, dancing and rolling about on the floor. The Index Controllers are kind of mediocre too, while it is nice to wave your fingers you are only like 90% sure which expression you're making while with Touch I feel a comfy 99% confidence level. A lot of avatars also have their hands break when using Index and doing basic stuff like victory gesture gets a bit janky.

The downsides of Quest are mediocre graphics, microphone and headphones quality, the 60-70ms input lag you get from the wireless ALVR setup and having to calibrate your shit every time you get online. Calibration is lost if all of your trackers leave the play area so that's a bit annoying but manageable. Quest allows 3rd party headphones to be plugged into the headset and you could get a 3rd party mic too so those issues could be remedied by more effort in your setup. Battery is about 2 hours for the headset but you can use a power bank just like Vive Pro wireless does.

Wireless is really a 2nd gen feature and the future. People who swear by roof cabling are delusional or have small rooms, I've tried that and it's a band aid at best and doesn't really work in a big room.

For absolute best experience get 2 sets of everything so you don't have to lug around extra power banks.

It's cool that they got it working on a standalone headset and all, but it's not like this is anything new. You could do stuff like that with a Leap Motion back in the DK2 days, and HTC had it working with the Vive's built-in camera last year.
Playing an actual game with no sticks or buttons and no feedback isn't really a good experience though, so just having finger tracking and nothing else is kind of a dead end for now.

I think nobody talks about it because we've accepted that it won't be changing for a while. Some headsets have a slight increase in FOV but lens design is still more or less the same for the current VR gen. I found it quite annoying in the recent The Walking Dead game where the certain text popups aren't easy to read because they appear outside or on the edge of the sweet spot no matter how you turn your head.

But I really enjoy Boneworks and by extension TWD (which I need to get and play) due to the added immersion of VR.
Things like having to physically bend down to pick up objects, being able to lean and move on my own terms as opposed to the usual FPS motion. Instead of having the game define what is cover and how I can blind fire, I can do all of that myself without having any popups or tutorials.

I do agree that VR development is very much in its infancy. It's bobbling around on tiny little toddler legs. But considering it's going from VR ports of flat games to actual first attempts at top to bottom VR driven games, I think it's a fine slow step forward. Stuff like H3 and BnS can be fantastic little test beds to find out what works and what doesn't, but we're going to need more actual "games", i.e. constructed experiences with a concrete goal, before the understanding of VR development can grow.

The core gameplay loop of both of these games is shallow and just leaves me wanting when the novelty wears off. That can probably apply to most VR games at the moment, they're either mechanically shallow or devoid of content for their mechanics to be used in.

I went back to CS:GO and while I really appreciated how consistent everything is compared to Pavlov, it's just so formulaic. We will assume our opponent went first with a set monster and a spell / trap card
In your hand: (WallRig), (NullP), (Tenpai), (Bulk), (Devil)
1) Activate Wall Rigging to place 3 cards on top of deck: wicked, dave or sunset (2000+ beaters) , devil (to pop monsters), cosmic(to pop back row)
2) Summon Null to draw cosmic and summon cosmic by tribute null to draw another majong monster and destroy the set spell/trap.

This is where we start establishing 1000+1000+2000+ ATK monsters for lethal. To do this we special summon Bulk and tribute it off for a 2000+ beater. Our board is now 3000+ Damage, in order to get the final 1000 Damage we use Tenpai to add a "Mahjong" from the grave and special a monster from our hand. For this you want to choose a "Mahjong" that will give you 4000 total ATK.
You now have 4000 Damage established vs an empty board so now just attack for lethal and O-T-K.

The Forest was tested a little bit yesterday to help establish some pregame building, but we ended up with things bugging out, only got the Katana and some basic junk. It doesn't seem possible to actually close the skill gap enough for it to ever make any difference. Avatar-thumbnail wizards, what's the aspect ratio I need to use to fill up the whole thumbnail for an avatar?

I feel like the preview camera in the SDK is lying to me. Whenever I actually upload an avatar, the thumbnail looks different from how it looked with the preview camera. As in, shifted to the left or right.

There are no servers, instead each world can have multiple instances with player caps defined by the worlds. /vrg/ meets tend to be in friends+ instances meaning you can join so long as you have at least one person on your friends list who is there. Post your username and someone will add you. Then you just add basically everyone there and meet people from whatever timezone suits you, etc etc. People jump worlds all the time but it's as easy as joining off someone on your friends list or walking into a portal they've dropped. There are public worlds too so just go through the worlds list and find something you like.
