Tell me if I'm missing some major feature in poiyomi, but I made a shading setup in UTS2 and made a similar shade ramp in poiyomi. UTS2 responds much better to point lights while keeping the shading configuration in tact, which looks great for a cell shaded style. Yeah I often like playing a few different characters. In the end it'd still be the most fun to switch around from time to time, so it's not such a big problem if you don't have one you consistently use yet. But for me, it wasn't so hard to find one I liked. It doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be nice to use and something you can have fun in. It's just a vehicle for what you want to do.

Only 3d modeling experience I had before VRchat was CAD and Google Sketchup. Things that control quite differently to character modeling and focuses on blocky things.

Going into VRchat modeling was totally fresh and new. My idea of shaders also learned in VRchat rather mostly rather than the other programs.
Normal maps, speculars, etc...

Character/prop modeling in Blender has been a great boon for me. It's really fun and my 2D drawing expertise and experience carries over nicely. Specially for shapes and texturing.

Finished Boneworks the other day. First time I played it I thought it was the most dumb motion sickness inducing trash with broken physics ever.
