Reposting because people still don't seem to know about the camera thing - added a link to the object dropper to freeze the camera in place.
I sent this to a friend as a not-a-guide-but-slightly-helps? for the depth of field camera (virtuallens/vlens) that people have been using recently. Hopefully it makes things a little simpler. The Google translate does a good enough job combined with the images to set this thing up.

http://static.logicmachine.jp/vlens/setup.html Follow this first to put the camera on the avatar with the default lenses (which don't have depth of field). Make sure the camera isn't fully in the hand or your hand or fingers will accidentally touch the touch screen and mess up your focus point.

http://static.logicmachine.jp/vlens/details.html Create your own custom lenses using this but instead of creating simple lens, create KinoBokehAFLens.
Then you can change the focal length and fstop numbers. I recommend making use of the multiple diaphragm so you can have multiple fstops per lens. Max blurriness to 7 is best but costs more performance.
Once you've made your lenses (you can have 7 max which is plenty with the multiple fstops values) you put them in the lenses slots here and click apply again http://static.logicmachine.jp/vlens/images/details-settings.png

I don't know if it's bad quality control or they're old ones they've sent. The manufacture date on the firmware is January, so I guess they're not brand new. Out of six controllers (three pairs) so far, I've only had one that has no problems.

Headset is quite good, yes. Microphone and speakers high quality, screen is best in class. Main downside is that it's extremely heavy, like 3x the weight of the rift cv1. It's pretty well balanced, but still just bulky. As far as problems, the cables have a small failure rate, but less than the controllers. I had to get a advanced replacement of the whole headset because the right audio kept cutting out.

I had a major problem for months with the firmware, or driver, where I'd get terrible visual noise, disconnects, and the headset failing to initialize, but I managed to fix it by disconnecting the power with SteamVR running, restarting SteamVR, then plugging the headset back in after it had loaded. I have no idea how that worked. The audio driver is also retarded and you have to manually find the microphone and speakers every time for it to work, but I use my own headphones anyway.
Build quality seems robust at least.

Good. Because of having processors on a headset as well as wifi, we have the option to wirelessly stream from our PCs, and the techniques are getting so good that they already are low latency and high enough visual quality that some people have given up using a wire. In addition, we can offload processing for stuff like tracking, timewarp, etc. The only downside is the weight, but that will eventually get moved to the back of the headset and actually act as a counterweight that a lot of people put on their headsets anyway.
Tracking will keep getting better and eventually catch up and even exceed LH.
The future of VR absolutely is in hybrid/standalone capable hardware and the advantages of PC-only headsets will only keep disappearing.

I don't think it makes sense to combine them at this point. Quest 2 should be a lower cost alternative primarily made for standalone use and an actual CV2 should be a higher end PC headset. I could see them including some of the Quest stuff in the CV2 if it lets them do a built-in wireless mode though.

Different anon here, just wanted to say, if you've already done uni level stuff and played with source, then you're already well above the skill level of most people that you see wearing custom avatars they assembled and uploaded. Paper-doll crafting avatars is really simple, it's just stitching together assets in blender and then configuring them in unity. You can learn how to do this in a few days, maybe even overnight if you follow along with any of the dozens of youtube tutorials for vrchat model creation.
I recommend a youtube channel by a user named Kareeda, he has some very good outlines of the whole process and how to do more advanced stuff when you're ready to go beyond the basics.

For the feet, i took some old socks and cut 3 loops of fabric on the top, which you can slip around the three knobs on the top of the tracker, then put on the sock and it holds the tracker on top of your foot. I'd like to think they'll do an affordable Quest 2 that can do everything and a high end Rift 2 for PCVR. If they can get the costs down enough for the tech that would've been in a Rift 2 or they decide they don't want to make an expensive headset again, they might just do one.
Either way, I don't see them updating the Go though. I think it's more likely that they'd do a slight refresh of the 1st gen Quest and sell that as their cheap headset instead.

I think it's a bit nonsensical for them to do that, since it'd bump the price up even more. The only way they would is if the headset they're currently working on is in fact Rift 2, and they want to give it quest features. The difference in semantics is that they would keep the existing quest as an entry point to VR, and the Rift 2/ quest hybrid would be the enthusiast kit

From the SteamVR status, pair new controllers. It can be kinda janky and you will need to plug in all three dongles to make it work depending on your setup. You need to pair each tracker to a specific dongle as well, which you can do by plugging them in and out one at a time. Once you set up all three, it won't give any errors about no room for more controllers, you just press the button on the centre of the vive trackers and they'll automatically connect to their assigned dongle and work as your hips or feet.
Also google is being a turbonigger, these new captchas are serious garbage and I hate being the one half blind dude trying to find chickens in bigfoot sighting tier images. What the fuck.

What I'd like to see is for Oculus is to follow up what we have right now with a premium Quest/Rift hybrid in 2020-2021. We're getting to the point where it's very much possible that a headset with phone parts on it can actually provide a superior experience to a headset without them, since it could allow wireless, off-loaded processing of various functions, and act as a counter weight for balancing the headset. We would probably need a wireless dongle adapter for our PCs though, which would definitely add to the cost, but I think it'd be worth it. I would imagine it could have 5-6 camera sensors providing better tracking than Rift S, a more knuckles-like touch controllers, a better audio solution than the headstrap piping on Quest, higher resolution screens than in Rift S, and same lenses since they're class leading there already and probably same FOV. And you can play with it fully standalone or link it with your PC with a wire or with a wireless dongle. I think that could be possible in a $600-800 price range.

I don't think you should be looking forward to that anytime soon. Those were $1000+ lab prototypes that no one knows how hard it would be to optimize into a consumer product. They were cool for showing off the progress of research and a look into the future of VR, but that's all the understanding we can gleam from those presentations. In addition, I don't think Oculus will make generational leaps with software breaking functionality until they can get it in a $400 headset (they won't make a standalone/hybrid Rift 2 with eye tracking until they know that they can do a Quest 2 with it so that all the software made for one can be fully enjoyed by the other). I think what will likely happen, if Oculus' next device is a premium Quest/Rift hybrid, is that the headsets they do after that will be a generational leap consisting of two products, one in the $400 range and one in the $600-800 range, where the $400 headset would be a little less premium, but still have all the essential stuff that makes it compatible with new software. For instance, it could be lower resolution, have less/worse tracking sensors, have worse audio, etc. I think we're getting to the point where we won't have won't have separate product releases but a single release date for a line of products much like graphics card and other product generations that mostly all release at the same time but with different tiers of quality. Then there could be mid-gen updates like the +/pro/S derivatives.
