Vive is a perfectly usable headset, it also has a nice upside of being in lighthouse system which allows you to upgrade part by part later (for example, swapping horrible vive wands for knuckles), but at the same time, vive is the worst first gen bundle you can have. It's not *bad*, it'll let you enjoy games, but you have to acknowledge that you're going for a sub-optimal option. I think even CV1 would be a better choice, unless you're getting this vive just to see what VR is about and upgrade real soon.

Also, $250 might be a pretty high price for used vive depends on where you live. Then again, VR prices skyrocketed ever since corona, so i might be wrong on this one.

Index because you get the higher refresh rate. Quest can do things like 90 lane maps that you need a field in real life to play, but otherwise the tracking isn't great. Rift S and WMR headsets also have inside-out camera based tracking. The original Rift is no longer sold and it's a dice roll whether you get acceptable tracking or not.

The actual fbt binding will already account for really long (anime) legs, and you can mess with the height setting in game to make sure you can stretch your arms fully. Bringing the controllers to eye level doesn't take long and it's a good habit. If you're REALLY concerned about your aim, try playing with V.Stock, but be aware it ruins the ability to blindfire and shoot from the hip.

I originally wanted to make a game all about object interactions in VR since I find that to be the most compelling aspect of VR. I want to do VR. I tried out a Samsung Odyssey+ for a while, and while I mostly enjoyed the experience, the way the controller tracking worked meant throwing things was nearly impossible, so the later levels of Superhot were a chore, so I want to get a proper VR setup. I'm really interested in Valve's controllers, so is it worth it to just buy a whole Valve Index, or am I better off buying the controllers separate and trying to track down an older HTC Vive?

I know some folks that are autismo about it and spend as much time on avatars as they do using them ingame. I only spent the upfront time building one from scratch, and doing variations of it from there. Can't be arsed to put in the time again doing from scratch again for a new model.

Depends what you want out of the game. Creating avatars itself is fun, don't see it as work you have to do to be custom and unique. If you're brand new to 3d modeling you're gonna spend a while learning the basics anyway. Our regular themed events are excuses to try new stuff and learn new things.

Rift S has better camera coverage, so I don't think you'd have the same issues throwing that you did on WMR. You'd probably be fine with something like that.

What kind of worlds assets we talking?
I use cc0textures/texturehaven for PBR mats if available.
CGTrader/ModelHaven for generic models (CGTrader lets you filter by free/royalty free), although I usually end up having to modify them anyways due to either not being low-poly enough, or look too generic to start but 'good enough' for a base to build from.

Otherwise there's some asset packs on Unity's own Asset store which I grabbed a couple of for quick prototyping, but it's 100% placeholder stuff. Other than that I build shit myself like pic related.

Quest version of VRChat is limited to Quest compatible content which is very little. Only few people bother uploading Quest versions of their avatars.

You can use Quest with PCVR using the charging cable supplied with Quest but apparently it can't charge while playing. Optionally you can buy the Quest Link cable for like $80. The price is kind of steep but it's a long high quality cable.

You can also stream PCVR over wifi. This adds latency but it works better than expected. You can either buy Virtual Desktop or put the Quest in developer mode install ALVR for free. AMD also has some streaming option if you have a Radeon.

my experience with Alyx was great. It's the game I use when comparing other VR games against. In terms of story, graphics, gameplay, music, and overall polish it's better than anything I have seen to date on VR.
