So I've been on vrchat the last couple days.

And watched a handful of vrchat videos. These are just about as cancer as youtube gets being marginally better than any and all videos that open with "HAI GUYZ!". I want to understand why people watch this on Twitch. You've got 2k people watching a guy run in circles in an empty home room for an hour.

This is a lot of awkward effort to just sit in a chat room with a big titty anime avatar twelve other dudes have.

I tried playing murder, but the rounds kept being over in less than a minute. I was never even able to open town of salem which seemed like it would be a reasonable social game. Never worked, no idea. I tried some horror escape world and got bored like 4 puzzles in.

All this made me want to play GmodVR. I just don't get the entertainment value of VRchat.

VRChat is mostly a chat platform with the worlds as backdrops. People talk to each other, or watch videos, or dance, or erp I guess, or try to "troll" in public worlds for views. There are game worlds of varying quality, but like you experienced, it's best with friends, not in public lobbies. Here's an interview about that Survios Walking Dead game. Looks like it'll be a lot more combat heavy than S&S with you fighting a lot more zombies at once. Has anyone else played Fallout 4 VR? Any ideas on how to get better performance out of the game? Skyrim VR runs great and looks great while Fallout 4 VR looks like shit and has constant fps drops. Fallout 4 VR is the only open world fps VR game on the market but it sucks that it runs so poorly. I dropped down to FXAA which made it run a bit better. My computer can run other VR games fine so the issue is clearly with Fallout 4 VR. I really wish they would optimize the game like they did with Skyrim VR.

Yes, they're backwards compatible, usually older games will treat them as vive wands with the joystick and touchpad mapped. For games that support steamvr bindings you can sometimes make a better mapping than the default too.

Not a single game actually depends on the individual finger tracking anyway, not even alyx. It's just a visual thing for sightly better immersion, since it's pretty unreliable at best.

Good point, I actually haven't considered that yet. It's easier to find a sittable position on a VR ball while in VR, since its direction doesn't matter. A chair needs to be reoriented because you have to sit on it in the front, but it's hard to reorient with the headset on.
You can just grab and sit on a VRball, but it's not that easy with a chair.

I'm getting 1000 bucks later this year and in theory I could either spend some of it on upgrading my shitty 24 inch 1080p monitor to a 40 inch 4k ips monitor along with a significant gfx card upgrade over my 2013 r9 270x

If you're interested enough in the games that are already out that you know you'll be able to sink tons of time into them, then VR is definitely worth it. If you aren't, you might be better off waiting on VR for a while.
With that being said, you should be able to grab a 27" 1440p 144Hz monitor, a Rift S, and a better GPU all for around $1000 if you're willing to blow all of it. 4K isn't worth it for games anyways.

Well, I only played for 2 hours, it feels kind of dead, there are no humans and you apparently only shoot at weird ghost thingies.
The premise of the game is great and I was sold on the Stalker like anomalies and dystopian russian shit going on.
But the tutorial already is janky, the controls are not very tight and the game looks ugly, even on high settings.
I like the backpack feature and manually reloading magazines but that's all the praise I can give it.
I guess I'm just too spoiled having played HL:Alyx as my first VR Game.

I feel like eye and mouth tracking aren't too far from being common. HTC already has the Vive Pro Eye and a lip tracker add-on, and there are enough Facebook face tracking demos out that I'd expect it to be standard on the next round of Oculus headsets.

None of the haptic gloves and suits seem to be anywhere near as ready for consumer use though. Everything that exists right now is either super expensive or a really early prototype.

Quest is one of the best headsets right now due to its versatility and overall developer interest.

PC headsets can have some benefits but they are minor until you get to $1000 range like Index or Vive Pro wireless or if you want to get something cheaper than Quest with all the mods.

For example Index has 144hz screen, less screen door effect, better headphones, better microphone and better tracking.
