I'm gonna try to grab an Oculus Quest tomorrow, a local game store has a few in stock still.
Short list of games/apps:

Windlands 2: I have a deep need to swing around on grappling hooks, this one's a priority

Another year, another year. How the time flies. And what a year it has been! So many newfriends and oldfriends, so many good times, so much irl bullshit holy FUCK.
Last year I said I couldn't tell you how much you all mean to me and how much /vrg/ has saved me from that dreaded loneliness of living alone in a small town with no family. So here I am, a year later, saying the same thing. I love you all. Good times and bad, I wouldn't trade it for the world.
I'm always blown away with how many memories of this place I've made. I've got 2118 screenshots and 343 videos, less than 30 of which were recorded by other people. I barely ever take photos in real life and I don't think I've taken a photo of myself in years, even on holiday. So last year I made a compilation of every image I'd taken in vr strung together pretty lazily to mark my anniversary of joining /vrg/. It was full of everything, even the shitposts I'd capped from the thread that made me laugh and a couple of unsavoury pictures because they're fun too. This year I've put a little more effort into the video and made a mashup of the videos I've taken and saved, some of which I'd taken for my own memories and never shared before. And of course there's the (good) shitposts and memes in there as well. Thank you all even just for existing. I know some of you struggle to feel you are significant or loved but without each and every one of you /vrg/, and the love we share, would not be the same.

On KDE you just go enable xrdesktop in your notification area and it should launch.

Open hardware/software project for IMU-based FK full body tracking, e.g. similar to perception neuron. Take a bunch of off the shelf gyros/magnetometers, tie them to joints on the body, connected with rj45 cables, do forward kinematics to guess at body pose. https://chordata.cc/

Looking at some of the other demo videos in their blog, it doesn't look like they do root motion at all, e.g. dead reckoning moving around in space. But the fact that they packaged up the hardware nicely is promising and they have a working implementation for actually getting the pose into blender. Fusing the data with headset/hand controllers would be possible.

Their kickstarter for 15 sensors (3 per limb, and I guess head + chest + hip) works out to ~$60 per sensor, which feels high on strictly components (I think the IMU they're using is about $30 itself on a breakout from sparkfun/adafruit). Still though, doing all the integration and straps is worth something. I'm on the fence on buying it myself. It's definitely more real than the hivetracker meme, and cheaper than perception neuron, or buying 15 vive trackers.

I order a Quest the day that event happened which announced Link functionality, it arrived a few days later and I enjoyed it a lot. Eventually Link beta came out and I enjoyed that too but my performance was always weak, my CPU being just an FX-8350 was having a very hard time with the video encoding, one of the things that chip is worst at doing.

But I struggled on and I carried on playing VR in headache inducing 15fps for many months.
Gradually some performance updates for Link did improve things, it got a little more stable, a little higher framerates.

Today I installed V19 to try out the new Link Performance/Quality setting and I set it to Performance mode.

It is buttery fucking smooth. What sorcery is this? What absolute fucking witchcraft is this? This has got to be at least a 40fps improvement it is an absolute world of difference, what the fuck?

1) I made a pair of glasses, is there a recommended way of having the glasses lens appear as a lens in VR? I don't know what kind of material or shader I should use for them, other than flipping the normals of it so the top/bottom of the lens can be seen through it.

2) Any difference on the rendering end having multiple materials sharing the same texture vs. one texture per material? Aside from download size packing everything you can into a single atlas, not that I think you can do an albedo+normal map together in the same texture with how Unity wants textures explicitly declared.

that is incorrect, oculus link uses gpu accelerated video encoding via nvenc for nvidia cards and vce for amd cards. you can see this in task manager by video encode activity on your gpu's with link running. CPU performance will impact link's performance because of overhead and what not, but the video encoding is on the GPU.

It is the single most affordable hobby in the world for adults. Cheaper than whores, motor racing, dirt biking, traveling, surfing (- t. someone who has had to replace buy a new surfboard to replace my original one in the span of owning vr), skiing.
