It's not just the shader that I am talking about. The avatars today have skin textures that try to replicate sub-scattering and stuff and shading on the skin directly on the Albedo texture even before the shader.

Flat lit toon shading is easy to set up, and I think it just got boring for a lot of people after a while. The act of avatar creation is a hobby in itself and not just a means to an end, and a lot of our veterans just went looking for new challenges. The difference may look small but it's a matter of scale and some factors to consider. With SMT on, you can see peaks to as high as 16ms, which is all the way down to 60fps. Your FPS in terms of these graphs, is always the highest value for any given frame. If your CPU takes 16ms to render a frame, and your GPU takes 5ms, then your output will still take 16ms in the end. It's all okay, anon. Creative process takes time and right mindset to fire up, don't force yourself if you're not ready or you'll end up overly stressed and disappointed. There is no need to hate yourself for not wanting to go through hard work, just make sure to start working on stuff next time you catch some strength to do so.

If it's software development, configure yourself some management system. I had issues with moving on with the project, in the end i've installed gitlab, took my sweet time listing issues and setting tasks, and now i'm just doing them whenever i have enough strength to work on it. Is it slow? Yes. Is it faster than doing fuck all while feeling bad about myself? Also yes. Highly recommended.

I'm gonna follow up my post from before about Blender. Keep in mind you can actually have more than one install of it, so it's completely possible to maintain separate versions. I have openshell and made shortcuts to a workshop folder like this, so I can just run whichever one I need ezpz.

Blender 2.83 and on have a first-time setup that lets you make it work like 2.79. I haven't tried this so I can't give you an answer on whether or not that's good.

Make sure you download it from Blender.org. Steam does have Blender but it's pretty shit because of how blender manages user preferences.

Unity Hub is just a convenient tool for managing multiple versions of unity and projects that is recommended by VRchat itself. It isn't necessary but goddamn is it helpful.

GIMP is probably going to be quicker and easier when you're doing texture edits, but there's nothing wrong with Photoshop. I have both because there's some things I need photoshop in specific for but I use GIMP 99% of the time.

Substance Painter is sheer autism but if you can buypirate it, it works really well. You can make fantastic looking texture edits to just about anything with it and is worth checking out if you're just bored. If you go into it expecting to do something right away, you're just gonna get confused and mad.

in my humble personal completely wrong opinion, games like boneworks are far better at showing what VR can do. Alyx is horribly restrictive, but you can't really hate it because it's extremely polished and it simply holds up as a good video game, while other games rely on VR and would be kinda shit otherwise.

After alyx, play Boneworks. If you're my kind of person, you'll love it. Alyx lets you play half-life game in vr and it's pretty cool, but doing wrestling moves on enemies, breaking their legs and watching them cripple, climbing, abusing game physics, all of that is something alyx won't allow you to do. And it's just so fun, holy shit, i love jank

The point is that Onward came out in late 2016 and had a spatial inventory system, guns were objects and not 'hands', and smooth locomotion. Alyx only has partial implementation of any of these things: items can be stored in the arms but the guns are switched with buttons and cannot be dropped when equipped, and the game requires teleportation to advance through certain parts with joystick locomotion being skeptically added late in development as if it hadn't been standard for over 2 years before release.
