So my Index controller is drifting. 5-6 months of use maybe? I've been gentle too and avoiding pressing down on them. They occasionally just drift. What do I do from here on out to ensure I get them RMA'd?

The weird thing is they only drift aggressively for a while, then hours without. Only noticed while playing No Man's Sky for hours yesterday (by the way it's fucking amazing in VR).

ALSO extra question: My VR performance got better with one setting change in Steam VR, permanently in all games (even VR chat), but I've noticed if I play a VR game for a long time around the:

Games have lost like 10-20 FPS

Another 10 FPS lost if I go back and forth in SteamVR or use overlays or load new maps
>2 hour mark
I'm down to 40-50 fps and it's getting really bad

Now I'm in 20-30 fps mark and it's only a matter of time until I'm going to hit 10 fps and I have to restart the game.

Usually restarting SteamVR and the game fixes it, or just the game, but usually both. I'm using SteamVR beta since it performs really well.

Just contact steam support, tell them your stick is drifting and describe in detail how you've tested it and how the small dot isn't returning or disappearing at the center. If they're telling you to test further etc just tell them you've already tested it and it's definately drifting. From there on just follow their descriptions if they decide to initiate an RMA process.

For me it's happened both times that they do an "advanced" RMA which means replace them and ship it to you before you ship back. From what I've heard it's mostly random. Probably depends on how the person handling it feels that day or how detailed and nice you are. Maybe they've started to do it more, I honestly don't know but I think you will get it on your first try.

Oh, anon go to SteamVR and click the small box thing and go to the settings and uncheck "motion smoothing" and since I use Index I also increased my refresh rate from 120 Hz to 144 Hz and I instantly noticed all games went from 60 FPS to 90 FPS and above. I see the few EUs I know on at like 5-8pm EST as well, but that's still cage for me. weekends start slightly earlier around 8 EST and go until super late, bleeding into SEA and afternoon EU.
