So I gave the whole "infinite walking" thing a try where you move your playspace with OVR advance settings around as you turn to walk in a square in real life...but I really just can't get the feel for how this works?

My playspace irl is a large (well, large enough) square that I want to walk around the edges of as I turn my playspace in-game so my avatar keeps walking forward. The problem is when I walk forward and then turn to the right (irl) when I hit the edge and then rotate the playspace so my avatar in-game is still facing forward, this shifts my entire playspace boundaries like to some other side of my room, like the boundaries itself just kinda float off behind me?

it's hard to explain so I drew a shitty ms paint image of it. Top is what should happen but bottom is what actually occurs, every time I turn right the playspace should rotate the boundary square so my boundaries are always to the left of me, but my avatar is still facing forward in-game, but for whatever reason the boundary just seems to turn away to some other angle? like it keeps getting farther from me. my avatar is facing correctly but i have no idea where I am anymore irl so I can't keep walking correctly.I'm sure it's something with the settings or something I'm not toggling correctly, could use some help here. I want to do some infinite walking, it looks fun. Or if there's a guide or something anyone can recommend to set this up right it'd be great

I think I know what is happening. So your boundaries aren't staying where they are when you playspace turn relative to real life? Do you have the newest OVR Advance Settings/ what version? Its on steam which is nice because it keeps it up to date. The older versions have "per disk write" which will move the boundaries relative to the virtual world. new version have an option to use that but by default it uses the new system which keeps the boundaries in place relative to real life which is what you want if you use Manual Redirected Walking. So if you update OVR just make sure that old-style motion is disabled.

Alternatively you could learn how to Manual Redirected Walk using the smooth turn in game instead. Which is tricker but doesn't break things like OVR does (sometimes).

This post came at a good time because I'm slapping together a walk for tomorrow at 3:00pm EST. We will walk 4km. BRING A DECENTLY SIZED AVATAR. or the trail will be much more than 4km. I'd expect it to take 2.5 hours again so make sure to bring water.

If you use ovr for the walk (space turn with the button), changing avatars while far the start will cause you to teleport far away. so just a heads up. Vrchat smooth turn doesn't have this issue.

The only way I've found to do it is with this janky firefox extension https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-vr/ , which works on 360 videos but not on 180.

I actually looked into it today and apparently google removed the youtube VR player on steam because it was unmaintained internally, and all dev effort is going solely to the quest youtube player. So no official way exists for pcvr to view 360 youtube videos at the moment.

Anyone here have any personal experience with these ceiling cable mounts for wired VR headsets? I am so sick of the cables getting in the way and am looking to this as a solution. I don't have WIFI 6 and have no interest in getting that at the moment so QUEST 2 is out of the question for now.

I remember looking into these like a year ago and the reason it turned me away from buying was I read apparent factual complaints that these pulley systems fuck up the HDMI cable in the headset cable bunch. (I use the Vive for reference)

Best bang for buck is the quest 2 with virtual desktop. You can play PC games on it just fine and it works well.

If you don't want to get zucc'd, a used vive is an option but it's a second class headset at this point. WMRs like the G2 are better nowadays. Index is great, absolutely fantastic headset, but not good value.

Not having any sort of face makes quite a poor avatar in my opinion. At least if there is a body, like for helmeted avatars, you can use that to be expressive but lacking both a body and a face means youre worse than a desktopper. VRC is more than just a discord chat room your avatar does matter even if it cant substitute a personality.
Marbles have swirly patterns on them which could, if not form a sort if face, go pointy when its angry, soft and swirly when happy, spirally when confused, make stars when excited and other clicked shaped.

oh hey I think we spoke yesterday, I was the one having issues with the whole space turn thing with OVR advance settings. So sadly I wasn't able to "fix" the problem with the advice from earlier...sort of. Instead I found out something.

When I enabled "playspace" with the settings it shows a "box" on the floor that is basically my play area, and THAT turns correctly as I turn in VR and use the space turn, however the boundaries (which apparently is called the chaperone) still turns in odd ways and becomes a mess. Basically as long as I keep looking down at the "playspace" box and ignore the "chaperone" walls I'm good, but I have no idea why I have two different boundaries like that, I wish I could make my chaperone turn the way the playspace does, but I guess I can try and adapt to just looking down at the floor as I turn each time.

Doesn't the redirected walking thing feel awkward every time you have to reorient your play space?

The basic idea is this. walk across your playspace, physically yourself turn 180 degrees, then artificially turn 180 degrees in game. That way you can walk across your playspace again. You can use OVR or Vrchats smooth turn for the artificial turn. In order to not fuck your cable you can either walk in a figure 8, or walk couple rotations in one direction and then a couple in the other direction. OVR has a rotation tracker you can enable that helps a lot. Look at the other posts for where they are in OVR.

It works by orienting the game world such that walking forward irl is walking forward in game and also not walking into anything irl. You can use either OVR advanced settings space turn or vrchat's in-game turning, ideally smooth if you can stomach it.

With a wire you'll have to switch directions every few turns, or walk in a figure eight so there's no acumulating twist. I recommend turning on the 'center marker' in OVR advanced settings which also shows how twisted the cable is, so you know when to change direction.
