for full body tracking to work properly do i need to have an avatar thats a similar height to me? im using ankle + leg + waist trackers and ive noticed the only avatars that i can calibrate properly are anime women since they have huge legs, do i just need to find better avatars? i'm 6'5" in real life and it seems like the calibration in VRC is trying to line up the avatar to my height which either makes the avatar huge or puts the trackers in the wrong place

Yes and no.
It would be ideal to have the right proportions but I think the best way is to adjust the arm length or leg length. The so called "height" adjustment in vrchat is mostly just to scale your arm reach in comparison to your avatar. So stretch out your arm as far as you can and then set a proper height that would have the avatar arms stretched out as well. Then see if the leg trackers are on the legs of the avatar. Adjust your avatar's legs accordingly if the trackers are too far hovering above. I have seen avatars with short arms before and had to increase arm reach thus requiring a larger height setting for vrchat. Subsequently that would also lower your feet trackers in proportion to the avatar.

It's situation dependent.
If a mesh is typically off and is rarely enabled, then a game object toggle is the best for performance.
A shapekey toggle will be overall slightly more expensive since you're always rendering the object, but I'm not sure if it's more expensive than just having extra renderers/ meshes for each toggle you want.
Silent's wizardry I'm not sure about. From the little I've heard it's at least better than a shapekey toggle, but won't work if someone has blocked your shaders. I'm also not sure if there's much overhead for the system itself.
Material swap to transparent should be your last resort. You're adding another draw call that is always enabled that other methods or blender work can typically fix.

Also I wouldn't take the avatar perf rank as gospel, especially with 3.0: Someone with two meshes (one skinned renderer for the face, one normal for everything else) but is 70001 tris will be very poor but still be significantly better performance than many medium rank avatars.

For manual atlasing I used Kattsune's guide to manual atlasing for 2.8, which gave me enough to get started with baking in 2.8.

More meshes means more cost to performance. While the mesh is off there is no cost to performance at all because it's not being rendered.
If you're going to keep it off most of the time, this method is best. If you're toggling entire outfits so each outfit is base body + outfit for a total of two meshes active at once at most, it's definitely not bad either.

The entire mesh is still being rendered even though it's behind another part of the mesh. Same poly count but less meshes is more performant but because you are still rendering it with it "hidden" it's less performant than the above method while hidden and more performant while it's active.

This is less performant than shapekey method but does mean you don't need to touch blender to get it to work so japs like it. All in all I'd suggest small pieces that are often going to be on should be toggled through shapekeys but large pieces by mesh toggle.

tl;dr reduce material and mesh count. Don't run shapekeys on high vert count meshes (seperate face mesh good because face shapekeys are running all the time)
It's all a balance though. If the toggle is only a small number of verts, then it would be okay to do shapekeys. If it's a large number then you definitely want to toggle a mesh.

Cats plugin for blender has an auto atlas which is shit but fast for getting mat counts down. Anything that's going to use the same material settings can go on the same material. If you're getting to like a 4k texture then you should be doing it manually to get it lower. It always seems to be poly count for me that fucks me over the very poor limit, everything else is solidly in medium.
The ranking system is retarded though so try not to stress too much about it. Keeping out of very poor is a good goal though I'd recommend having a fancy version and an optimised version uploaded as two different avatars. Get the optimised version down to good or excellent and then just go nuts with cool features on the fancy one.

It's basic, not terrible. Quick and dirty and perfect for blender newbs that want results without actually understanding what they're doing. If you're using a custom maid for example then the textures are already in squares and have islands so it's great for that. Just don't be retarded and use whatever setting that gives you a massive section of empty space trying to make it into a perfect square.

Today's attempt at unpair-repairing trackers and controllers have solidified this strange issue of one tracker always being on standby even if it's off. Is there something I can do with the dongles to fix this? Each tracker and controller /can/ pair, but this standby issue HAS to be the source I assume.

Understandably, you're misunderstanding how Silents shader toggles work. They're not transparent at all and work with the opaque option. It doesn't make the mesh transparent and doesn't render it. It's pretty magic stuff and I don't know the details but Silent is pretty open about it if you talk to them directly.
The shader itself is performant and looks good unless you're trying to do somewhat niche things. I've tried it for an avatar and I'm not going to change all my currently used avatars to it but I certainly might for future avatars.

Toggling this way is extremely easy to set up too. You literally just select the tris you want to toggle in Blender and move their UV coordinated 1 unit to the right. Just press g, x, 1 and you're done for the toggle in the first slot. Set up the animations as normal but just toggle the shader option.

I just bought one after being on a vive with fbt forever. Wireless is freaking awesome. Air link was easy to setup and works well enough. Hate that I had to make a facebook account but the hardware feels like it's good quality. I've been using it with my trackers for wireless fbt and once calibrated properly it seems to be about as good as fbt with an index or my old vive. Just expect to have to calibrate every day or so at least once. Only takes a moment to do though. Built in audio, headstrap, and facial interface are kind of mediocre. They're usable but not the best. I got a vrcover and a third party headstrap coming.

Buy new wands. I don't remember exactly, but I don't think the knuckles have tactile actuation for gripping. You can also get more interesting hand tracking with the Vive Hand Tracking SDK.

Use the controllers for actions that need low latency and high precision, and then the hand tracking for fun. The index controllers are a combination of these two options I have given you, while being inadequate at both.

I'll only say that maybe the thumbstick is cool on the knuckles, but I am not sure if it has drift problems or if it could come callibrated incorrectly. Really, you should just get new wands because if you end up with knuckles that have callibration problems, it is just annoying to deal with that.

The construction is fine, you can bash them around and they're physically stronger than the wands by a large margin. However, the thumbstick and the finger tracking tends to fail. Something about what they did to the thumbstick causes it to just wear out quickly. Not sure if they've fixed this yet or not but it's a pain in the ass.

I knew nothing about blender or unity when I joined vrchat. Started by frankensteining/kitbashing mmds, then gamerips like custom maid, then vroid. Took a few years but now I make stuff from scratch because I learned everything involved piece by piece. I've even sold a couple of models on booth, so they're at least good enough that someone wants to pay for them.

Never used public pedestal avatars but I guess you have to if you're a new player these days. If you're new and want to upload something, you should skip the old mmd days and start with booth. Find a good quality base with lots of options and get familiar with the model. Don't worry if it's popular, that just means there's more clothing and stuff available for it. Make it unique by editing and customizing it and learn the software in the process.
