What are the best VR RPGs right now? I'm about halfway through Asgard's Wrath right now and I'm honestly pretty disappointed. The graphics are nice, but the RPG mechanics are just scavenger hunting for upgrades for equipment rather than a proper leveling+skill system. The environments are pretty, but you are just railroaded through easy puzzles rather than rewarded by finding alternate solutions or thinking through the box. I wanted something more traditional while being a bit more in depth mechanically.

Karnage chronicles is bad. It's pretty but it's only like 3 levels of linear shooting galleries. The item shop progression is just making some numbers larger. I dunno about mage's tale.

The Todd game ports are the only really in depth VR RPGs right now unfortunately. There are some interesting roguelikes like until you fall or VR dungeon Knight, but they don't scratch the same itch for sure.

I much prefer the leveling system in it. Most of the items you need are dropped by specific enemies so it takes more thought than the usual mindless mob grinding.

For the most part you rarely need to back track if you fully explore the maps and since higher upgrades don't drop in early levels you don't end up becoming over leveled.

I was pretty familiar with the BMW Z4 from before so I knew to drop the gearing down ass low as possible because even optimized for acceleration there is only one place on that track where it can top it's last gear for 1/2 a second. Higher speed gearing wont have the power to reach that speed. Some people were weary to take soft slicks but even on a 24 min race they didn't start to degrade till the end and even degraded still had the edge.

Having the alternate class on the race added some real chaos. Pretty fun.

Minecraft and Skyrim can have their own /vg/ threads and you can play both in VR, but people tell me we don't have enough content to support the thread without VRC.

No I think it can be done but it has to be started right and not as part of some autistic meltdown. Start collecting and organizing screenshots and WEBM's now. As we build up the collection we can start hitting /v/ making sure there is at least one VR thread getting bumped. After keeping that up for maybe a month or 2 it would be time to make a /vg thread, regularly shilling it in the /v/ thread and other /vg/ threads where VR gets brought up like sim game general, and Ace Combat as they have latched onto Project Wingman there with a few VR players.

I don't think we can just swipe /vrg/'s label though as that would be too contentious. My guess is that if we pull off a new thread and keep it going then the acronym for VRG will later be regarded as "(VR)chat (G)eneral"

For now we should start focusing on the first step of shilling VR games on /v/ more regularly. May as well post the same things here, and maybe we get some new people to come into the thread to post about non VRC stuff. When I turn off steam VR, sometimes one of the base stations will just stay on forever, even tho I set it to turn them off when I'm done.

Sometimes when I turn on Steam VR, one of them will refuse to turn on until I fuck around in the settings telling it to refresh.

Lastly, my right controller likes to turn green, then blue after a few seconds, and stay blue forever until I turn it off, and wait, then turn it back on. It will ALWAYS do this, twice, and it only stays on in the third attempt.

are you using fbt? if so, this could have something to do with the setup of your vive-tracker dongles.
it's possible they're struggling with tracking because of how you have the dongles set up (and when the dongles struggle with tracking, it can interfere with tracking for other items).
you want the dongles to be placed with a clear view of the play area, and you want them to be spaced generously apart from one another, and from the computer.
it's also possible that the dongles are overloading your motherboards usb controller or something. this can happen if you plug them in to usb 3.0, i'm told. apparently motherboards can't distinguish between the amounts of data sent through a usb port, so if you plug something into 3.0 it'll assume it's using the whole bandwidth. multiply that by the number of trackers and i guess it's a problem. so people say put the dongles into usb 2.0.
also, it could be your play space setup, or some form of interference with bluetooth. are you in an area with a lot of bandwidth interference? lots of bluetooth and wifi and shit?
or are there mirrors, windows, picture frames, or other reflective stuff in your play area? that's not good for tracking.
apparently even incandescent lights are bad for tracking.

So I finally got my Vive Pro 2. Heres the day one impressions for anyone who cares.

The fov feels awful, all the shit ive heard about it is true. Even though the last time i put on a headset was my old og vive 1-2 years ago, I still experienced the letterbox effect.
And its a big deal as well cause I had trouble feeling immersed because of it, and yes I did put in a thin replacement cover. The monitor strapped to your face meme is apparent to me suddenly. Doesnt seem like you are inside vr, but are zoomed into an ultrawide monitor with border goggles instead. Most people say it gets better once you are used to it so im counting on that.
The screen itself is pretty good once you find the sweet spot, takes a lot of fucking around with the headset and may need a lateral strap mod to keep it in the ideal position. That last fact really takes away from any comfort gains since you have to crank it beyond comfort levels so its close enough to your eyes.

Headphones are essentially doa with the buzzing noise, I dont buy that im just unlucky, i think they fundamentally screwed up the hardware and the people who dont mention it are either ignoring it or the small exception.

I dont care about the mic but we all know its bad anyway.

Overall the only reason i dont have deep buyers remorse is cause i more or less knew all the drawbacks going in. This headset is what a modded experience should be, one really cool feature thats very rough around the edges. The price should be half of what it is right now, or equal to the reverb g2 at most. At the moment its essentially paying for an $800 high res screen installed in an old broken enclosure that you can get for $50 used on ebay. Like 0 features beyond the screen are worth anything.

tldr: unless you're an impatient fuck like me, just wait for index 2

but the resolution/video quality is really very impressive. i'm sure video card has an influence on that, but on a 3080ti it's a good time.
the headset is very comfortable on the skin; the cushions are great. but it's noticeably heavier than an index, and it's more difficult to lie down in.

I think that you are correct. I noticed that the buzzing got louder in brighter scenes, and quieter in darker ones. It makes quieter games like The Talos Principle unbearable. Look at the controller designs for the games made before VR. Also, just take off your headset and look at your keyboard and mouse. These "controllers" that pretend to be your hands were probably designed by someone with a total and complete schizophrenic disconnect from reality. Not to mention the fact that you can probably get away with needing only one tracked controller, letting you recharge an alternative in the background. The ergonomics on them suck, and you can actually replace most of the functionalities of a VR controller with a keyboard while keeping the interest of both controller functionalities. (The functionalities being, having your hands interact with your virtual environment, and then also using your keyboard+mouse to do far more precise input without needing to recharge anything).

Why do you play Mahjong?

I am having problems with selecting items like larval cores in no man's sky.
I think the problem is the virtual cursor is permanently stuck on the horizon and it prefers that to my headset or motion controllers.

Basically I can't easily look up or down to grab an item and have to crouch at around a narrow one-meter range so the item is near horizon level. Any fixes?

I like playing it in irl and own a physical tile set but it's hard for me to get into playing it in vrc. I enjoy the game very much, it's comfy, you can talk about some shit with friends while having something to play around with. It goes well with snacks or light drinking. And you can easily play it at various "seriousness" levels from mostly automatic to actually putting in effort and tracking what's happening.
That said, whenever I tried to hang out and play at mahjong meetup it didn't really feel as social, but probably that's just a me problem. I also have a real problem with how much people randomly go afk. It was extremely common when I came to meetups, to the point where I never managed to play even just full East round without interruptions or someone filling in for someone else.

Hey /vrg/ I bought a 6m (20ft) usbc - usbc cable, and if I plug it into my quest 2 for oculus link, I get some strange behaviour
My pc has 2 usb c ports. A normal usb c 3.2 port, and a usb c audio port (idk what they were thinking, but it's just a usb 2 port)
If I plug it into the 3.2 port, my quest 2 has a seizure and keeps asking for data access, like it's connecting, then disconnecting over and over again and nothing I do seems to get it.
BUT if I connect it to the usb 2 port, it's happy.
Is the cable just too long? It wasn't that expensive a cable, but I'll be a bit upset if it doesn't work.

It's full of edgecases, sound simulation, flight physics simulation, it has it's own weapon and module integration API, so you can have custom menus. Of course it's big, but to make it as polished you'll write the same or more amount of code.

I had the same base station issue. From my googling around I think the reason is a fault in the bluetooth driver used for the index by windows. It seems to have fixed itself for me recently so you could check that you're on the most recent windows updates.
