All the stuff I've tried has been lackluster. Of the stuff I bought on itch, Villain Sim is probably the most feature complete but even then those eggs are over easy. DomSim isn't awful but they need to fire their voice actors and the voice director, if you can call them that. Iragon's got good ideas but its actual gameplay is barebones. Most of the Japanese stuff is overpriced or trying to entice you to buy away from itch. The Holodexx folks seem nice but they're focused on the wrong details. Closer seems neat but like most of the stuff on itch, none of it's fucking done yet and they're all asking for subscriptions with not much besides promises to show for it. It's real frustrating.

3D videos at the usual places are just crap filmed with the worst possible lens you could imagine, reprojected at the least convincing angle. It's just not there yet.

If you want real intimacy, you need real people, and if you're going to do that via VR, you're going to find yourself in a strange place in VRC. I can't recommend that.

I will note that the free DomSim Therapy is kind of nice but it's not really a porn experience.

On one hand it's a sweaty tryhard track with lots of variables that can affect timing, but on the other it's a popular track most people should know, and a car like an Evo or some AWD traction godmachine makes it harder to ruin your run due to under/oversteer. We found out that VRchat is using the now unmaintained youtube-dl, which is now being activly throttled by Google making decoding so slow as to pretty much not work at all. However, videos hosted on people's own domains or on dropbox or whatever work fine, so you should be good.

It is possible to manually change the youtube-dl used in vrchat to a new fork.
Download one of the .exes of yt-dlc from here https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp, rename it to "youtube-dl.exe" and place it into "%appdata%/../LocalLow/VRChat/Tools"

I just did this and it works perfectly. Everyone who wants to see youtube videos is going to need to do this unless the VRC devs do it in an update at some point.

Absolute cheapest thing is Logitech DFGT, shit can be found used for absolute pennies, has real FFB and 900deg steering angle. If you're not usre, you can get g29, t150 (supposedly there's t256 or something now and it's good?), or t300, and just sell it used if you won't like it. VR port is hit and miss. Motion controllers are unusuable unless you have Vive wands so only get it if you have those or plan on using a flight stick or Xbox controller. One of the few things Rebirth did well was making the UI easily usable with a controller so it's viable.

Where the port falters is that they changed or cut a bunch of random stuff out of the game to make it easier to run. They made the entire story and Universe different from the non-VR version for some reason. But obviously it's not so different that they couldn't re-use a ton of stuff from the original game. There's less NPCs in stations (which were crap anyway), fewer stations per sector and so on.

As for whether it's a good space sim, it only feels like that while flying around and seeing the shadows in your cockpit. Being stuck with one ship, the game had a fraction of the choices that previous X games had and for the industry side, a huge draw to the series, building stations and fleets was frustratingly buggy. Rebirth earned it's reputation as the worst X game and VR doesn't really change that. X4 is a much better game even with it's flaws but it won't be getting a VR version because VR version of Rebirth sold poorly. Rebirth VR is a bargain bin space game so don't go paying the $40 they're still charging for it.

Just got sairento on my quest 2 and am really enjoying my first few hours of it. Combined my favorite parts of swords of gargantua and stride. Guns are fun but I'm challenging myself by doing swords only, stacked my gear with hp regen and movement cost down buffs. Parrying bullets is very tough and I wish there was a training zone to help me git gud at combat.

I like the game myself. It has my favorite bullet time mechanics of any game (Sorry Max Payne) and once you enable sliding+flipping the game really opens up as you strategically crouch and raise your arms IRL to get everywhere. It's pornographically exciting once you get the hang of it and crank the difficulty up. The Quest version is gimped though, you can only have 9 enemies spawn in at a time on the Quest 2 version and a mere 5 with the Quest 1 version in what is supposed to be a horde shooter. I've had sairento for about a day now, reached level ~50. Decided to try out the guns for a bit but accelerating and spamming triple sword lasers seem to outdamage every gun easily. Similarly, I've gotten my chakra regen so high I can spam accelerate and dash across the arena before any enemy can even fire their gun. Really, once you've maxed out the focus tree and have a decent "regain chakra on hit" buff on your sword, you can stay perpetually accelerated and instagib every enemy.
It seems my decision to play swords only wasn't a challenge, but an accidental discovery of the strongest playstyle in the game, lol.

It's very much a game where I feel like cranking up the difficult+skill rating and adding as many modifiers as you can helps make things more interesting, if wonky. Last night I had natural zombification+daimyo on an elimination mission and after avoiding a ton of insta-kill attacks from geishas, ran out of ammo while fighting the daimyo. Once wireless is a standard I don't think adding the handful of chips to make it standalone is going to really cost that much more. Most of the overhead is going to be in manufacturing/labor and if they can get to any kind of scale on these they'll get cheaper. Well not exactly. The "oculess" hack you see people talking about requires you to login first with a facebook account to basically unlock the shit, then you can take it offline eternally. Virtual Desktop is the app you'd use to get the headset working with direclty with SteamVR, and unfortunately it's a paid app that seemingly no one has provided a crack for yet, so you'd need to buy it first from the oculus store. Only after that can you use the headset eternally offline, with SteamVR. You could also use the native oculus Link or Air Link streaming, which indirectly lets you use it with SteamVR, but you'd need to use firewall or other methods to block the Oculus desktop app from connecting to FB servers. Hoops to jump through, but it was worth it for some people.

Not everyone does this and almost no one is perfect but the way I see it, VR is a nascent industry which is at a crossroads for it's future. If market share shifts significantly towards the facebook ecosystem, then VR is condemned to a heavily locked down and very anti-consumer existence. Apart from data-mining, there will be ads, devs will be forced to make fb exclusives, and the vast majority of normal non tech-savvy consumers will be tied to a closed ecosystem which will gauge them with premium prices and MTX. If there is a significant non-fb presence in VR, then the industry might just remain open and competitive, with a pro-consumer stance.

And atm, the price to make the right choice is only double the cost of a quest. It's not hard to save up money for twice the amount of time.

My point about the affordability is with regards to a wire. You are giving up so much just to do wireless with the Flow. If you're already purchasing base stations and controllers, the Index will give you a better experience. Wireless is not that important when your image quality, refresh rate, FOV, latency, etc is Quest 1 tier and you have to go through the janky hybrid setup. The comfort might not even be that good for active gaming and you might need to buy an additional headstrap. Like seriously just make your life simple here and deal with the cable, it's not that bad.

XR1 and XR2 are made for VR but not necessarily have to be used, just as Quest 1 did not use an XRx chip. It could use an XR1, but that may be less likely in 2021 for manufacturing reasons. But if it did use an XR1, it's still hard to say it'd be better in a significant way compared to the 835. It's hard to find exact information on the video decoding capabilities of each chip, but, from their website, the XR1 supports up to 4k 30 fps decoding, while the 835 supports 4k 60, so if we follow that, then the 835 actually beats the XR1.
