I think it's been decent so far desu. Both valhalla and the school maps were great visually and retained the good lane philosophy that the previous vrket had. They took 3 steps back with the corporate Akihabara world's though. Christmas maps were good too and ha some quality stuff. I already caved and bought a model already. Hi here /vr/ general!
So my younger brother got gifted a VR recently with couple of random games, including all he major stuff like Pavlov or Alyx, and he seems to be enjoying it so far.
I'm thinking of getting him some VR game for Christmas (in addition to some proper physical gifts) but I am sort of clueless in regards to VR.
He has hundreds of hours in regular Fallout 4 and Skyrim, and keeps replaying them once in a while, so I thought that getting him one of those in VR might be a good idea, as he does not own either.
Which one is better? Alternatively, are there some other absolute must-haves? I've just checked his steam profile and he seems to be playing only story-driven singleplayer games. He's finished Alyx and played Superhot for couple of hours, but barely touched Pavlov and other multiplayer titles.

Find any angle to be able to interact with people but in small groups - many meetups are huge 40+ person affairs which can be hard to get into as a newcomer who isn't great at social interaction.

The trick, is to find ways to interact in small groups - in this community, that's usually smaller meetups, and what I personally believe is the best avenue, going to non-VRChat game lobbies. Poker, ATS, Assetto, even the combat games (even if these have less time to chat since people are on edge and focused). From there, you can expand into VRchat, where you can recognize and speak to people you recognize, and from there, expand your acquaintance group over time. The point is to be proactive about all this - on top of the steps i've mentioned, make sure you don't take too many long breaks, make sure you pounce on any opportunities to take part in events and especially smaller group events like >>362924843 and even non-event meetups like world exploring, or checking out things like the Vket currently happening.

As someone who isn't great at speaking to people when I don't know them, this is what has allowed me to move from silent watcher newfag to 'small group of friends and not afraid of going to huge meetups' newfag.

Try to get into a smaller regular meetup, like pypy dancing, exercise, mahjong, movie watching or whatever else. Talk to people there, get into a friend group. Then keep up the link you have just made, join on them, talk to their friends and then to friends of their friends etc. Go to events, try to be around. Jumping straight into a 50+ people instance is gonna be hard simply because it's loud and chaotic, though probably not impossible since people tend to cluster into closer friend groups anyway. It's easier to strike up a conversation when you have some kind of common activity besides druinking and small talk, hence why smaller directed events are better for starting out.

Yesterday I sat next to a small group of anons talking in VRChat, very calmly and quietly having a slow mundane conversation about regular life, yet I couldn't think of anything to contribute or say. I don't think you understand just how bad realtime lights are for performance.
They LITERALLY double the rendering cost of everything they touch. It gets even worse with shadows. It instantly turns 10-material "medium" avatars and a decently optimized world into the equivalent of a 30-material Very Poor avatar with an even laggier backdrop.
I'm on a 2080 and an i7 11700k. Those worlds cut my framerate in half. I don't believe you for even a millisecond when you shout in my face "oh my frames are totally fine tee hee". You're either coping or fucking blind, and neither of those options are flattering.
When the gun autist says that the world is laggy and we should go elsewhere, I can guarantee half the people in the room agree, they just don't say it as loudly.

there are some ppl in /vrg/ that i really like to hang out with but I try to always remember to suppress the urge to go talk to them TOO often, since it would be really terrible if they think of me as clingy or an orbiter, because ultimately orbiters are seen as less socially valuable because they are so "easy" to engage with. (since they will simply almost always come to you.)

On the contrary, if you manage to make yourself socially desirable in passive rather than active ways, (i.e. always being around orbiters, filling a rare "niche" such as being pure, having a meme associated with you in the thread, flaunting a brand new avatar, etc), then a lot of ppl generally can't help themselves but want to parlay with you, and whether they know it consciously or not they do see you higher on the pecking order.
