The cost of a few polygons disabled with Silent's inventory is nothing compared to the hit of a shapekey, bone or even an extra mesh/material. I'm going to swoop in here and point out that the extremely angry shader arguments are poisoning the well tier and muddying what should be a pretty easy conversation.
I don't really care what your favorite shader is or whatever, I'm just asking people to have good hygiene and have a decently optimized avatar ready to use when the instance gets really big. Like 40-80 people.
Last night at the bunny suit picture a lot of people showed up which is nice but pretty much everyone crashed out or had to leave after the pic, even those with high end PCs, because it was so laggy and people make zero effort to have optimized avatars these days.

I think it's fine to have your showy unoptimized avatars when it's a small group, but it's kinda annoying when people roll in with their 70 unmerged meshes, 3000 dynamic bone interactions, and 400mb filesize and the meetup is big. There's no computer that can keep up with that when there are 60 people in the world and 40 of them are ridiculously unoptimized.
If people need help learning to optimize there are lots of people who are talented with avatars around that can help.

Best thing to do is combine all meshes (in blender) that you'll be using and delete all meshes that you won't be using (in blender). I like to keep the face mesh separate so you'll end up with one face mesh that's got all your expression blendshapes on it and one body mesh with all other blendshapes deleted.

Do be careful that some outfits use blendshapes to remove parts of the base body to avoid clipping issues.

Then combine and atlas the material and textures (once again in blender).

Most booths come with sub 70k polys, so that's really all you need to do in order to hit the "good" rating. Shader autism can come later, since booth authors usually give you shaders that are good to go out of the box.

Hey guys I actually decided to test if the whole separate body matters. And it does make a noticeable difference. The attached body floats around 4ms+ for rendering times while the separate floats well below 3ms. All models have the same 5 shapekeys on and there is only one material per model. My own testing was giving me funny results until I disabled 3.0 emulator and then the results were clear and consistent, this is why I am a game dev with a plethora of achievments under my belt and (You)'re a fucking shitposting lunatic who denies my accomplishments!

Blendshapes aren't hard to make though dolls don't really need them. That doll is also extremely well optimised. Even the premade booth versions ( https://booth.pm/en/items/2498266 ) are under 10k poly, 1 mesh, 1 mat. Just being an fbx isn't a problem either because it's going to be customised. I made one edit pretty easily by just slapping on parts and moving the UVs onto the doll's texture. Then it was just a case of desaturating that section and adding a multiply layer with a flat colour over it to keep the felt texture. Could probably also use colourise in gimp too but even a mental retard like me doing it in a sleep deprived state with tonnes of distractions can make something of passable quality.

We heard the exact same thing back in 2018/2019 from the dev team and their dickrider orbiters that posted here where they had their "80 person instances" where all they did was enforce no dynamic bones and magically everyone was getting 60fps!

Hello there -- I think I need a bit of a rundown of what VRG really is basically. Is this a closed community that you can't get into without knowing someone, basically? I've been hanging out in these circles quite a It lately and "VRG" seems to come-up rather often which is why I started sniffing around for it. Consider also the amount of people who never connect their Quest 2 to SteamVR. The fact that it's standalone isn't really an issue other than you paying more for something inside of it you won't really use most of the time as a PC enthusiast. The issue with it is it's incomparable, visuals are worse than its competitors and its harder to run at nicer graphics settings as its competitors. i just can't afford that. not to mention this is only worth it if you have headset that uses base stations, i have q2, so i would have to buy base stations solely for use with the trackers, so that would be alot of money just for fbt, slime comes out super cheap, only about 100 bucks total.
Not to mention the next gen vr headsets and gear coming out this year will possibly have fbt included, or some cheap fbt solutions that come out, so base stations are not only expensive but will likely be soon outdated. so for me if i use something else than slime it would have to cost not much more.

I think you could do it by extending the world-space prop trick (https://github.com/VRLabs/World-Constraint ) for all the bones in your avatar. Create a copy of your avatar and delete the visible mesh (just the bones) to use as the smoothly updating source, set all the parent constraints to a visible version of your avatar, then have an animation at whatever you want your update rate to be enable/disable the constraints, causing your visible avatar to jump into the next position.

yes this is possible with parent constraints. it's easier if you use scripts to do this.
basically you have your main armature with no mesh attached. then you have a second armature that your mesh is actually bound to, and you use a parent constraint on ALL bones and constantly animate them on/off so that your second armature gets "updated" to the position of your real one only 20 times a second. i scripted this a while back but it's a bit clunky, i could share it later
