It's not even that. They have a problem from a business standpoint. Mods are entirely too common and too well accepted by the community. How are they going to sell features to people later if modders will just mod them in?
The great number of people who are upset about losing quality of life is exactly who they are targeting with this. Script kiddies and dedicated hackers will just bypass EAC anyway, but who really cares as far as business is concerned, they weren't going to be paying anyway.

What they are trying to accomplish is the ween the majority of the userbase off mods, the people who won't bypass EAC but are power users, so that mods are less accepted and so that they can sell quality of life to these people later.
Which is why they're characterizing mods as evil things that hackers and avatar thieves use - they also need to get the level to which people accept modding back down to the ground level, so these people won't mod their clients and will happily buy the things that they're selling later on.
It's all about taking control of the platform back so that they can keep it locked down and sell things to people later. I imagine they're just going to weather the storm for the short term.

There is a bigger issue that needs to be addressed! Banning QoL mods affects POCs more than anyone else! I can’t believe VRChat is going out of their way to make the lives of poor POCs even harder! Get your knee off their neck!

The game still runs like dog shit, everybody's been ducking into private worlds ever since user trust became a thing, the looming threat of paywalled features still hovers on the horizon, quest support has absolutely flooded the game with furfags and children beyond repair, 3/4ths of the people who made this game what it is have already fucked off. The only reason anyone really comes on anymore is for the user content that's already there.
At the end of the day, VRChat is just Second Life in VR. It's a pioneer that houses hundreds of creations of talented people, but it's also a pile of shit, and kind of always has been. NeosVR does have this semi-official modding framework now https://github.com/neos-modding-group/NeosModLoader they even have the SSAO remover. IMO neos is still overall too clunky for general "meetup" use though, regardless of furfag devs and cryptoshitters. Like another anon said it's just not designed for it and it'll never have good performance, not without deep architectural changes. It's a multiplayer unity editor.
