I went through like 4 hours of work replacing the head of an MMD model with a different MMD head and then converting it to work for VRChat but now that I just finished up all the Blender work, i'm paranoid that the head is a bit too tall and a bit too wide and I don't want to go back as many steps as i'd have to go to "fix" it, because i'm not even sure if it IS actually too big.

Pretty much is. If you have CATS tool for blender, go in to Pose Mode, click on your avatar's Head bone, go in to Scale mode/Press S on your keyboard, move your mouse to scale. Once done scaling, hit "Apply as Rest Pose" in CATS.

All of the child bones should inherit scale by default- you can swap this with Shift-W "inherit scale" or in the bone menu.

All you've gotta do to mess with the head scaling is scale it in pose mode and then use CATS "apply as rest pose" This will retain all the blendshapes too

Just finished all the basic tutorials in VTOL VR and I'm having fun. I want to thank the anon from the last anon who told me it's a nice balance between arcadey and sim-tism. you got the model that's rigged and stuff, the difference between "ready to use in unity for general purposes" and "ready for vrchat" is like 30 mins work tops, mostly just populating settings for things like lip sync for shapekeys and accounting for vrchat's weird specific requirements (not so bad these days)

On the other hand if you're like "oh i have this 3d model but it doesn't have any bones or weights how do I make it move and put it in vrchat" you're gonna be busy for a while

Depends on what you want to do, it ranges anywhere from changing a texture and reuploading content to modelling armature-rigged things from scratch. I'd say that if you want to feel somewhat free in executing your ideas, you'd want to know how to weight paint, how to create a model with UV-mapped texture, how to modify and adjust armatures, how to weight paint, basics of unity like how animation system works in general, how humanoid rigging looks like, and it sounds like a lot until you realize you don't have to be good at any of that. It also comes to you very naturally: get some avatar, probably on booth, as a base, and then fuck around with it little by little until you get the knowledge. You also need to have some version control system, even if it's just you making shit ton of copies of project every day, as this process will surprise you in how bad can it go, entirely at random.

it's honestly pretty fun regardless of your initial knowledge. can be tedious, can be enraging, but i've never thought "glad it's over" after creating an avatar

Half of the people using mods have never written a single line of code in their lives, and I was mostly thinking of mods that update with the auto-updater. It's easy to undermine the room temperature IQ gorillas that download the sketchiest of clients as a minority and a group stupid enough to deserve their money stolen but there are a lot more of these people than most would think, most likely some of your friends would fall for the same things, seen how many /vrg/ people get their discord accounts hijacked to this day.
If the world was perfect and there were no bad actors, or if everyone had the time and knowledge to read open source code keeping mods unmoderated would have been a no-brainer. But I can totally see why VRC chose to nuke all mods instead. It won't destroy all malicious clients, but severely reduces the amount of access to these clients and also reduces people making and updating them.
Personally I'd say the ideal solution would have been to create a steam workshop type of thing where people can upload whitelisted mods and are somehow legally liable to not fuck them up with malware with updates.

i dont know if this issue is just on this model, or every model, but when i calibrate on my rindo, its like the hip tracker is tied to my upper chest.

i work around this by playspace moving upwards so the white hip tracker ball lines up horizontally with the green line. also, when you calibrate, your (maybe just mine) model spawns a few inches in front of you, so you have to walk or playspace forward a little bit to line up the body as well.

This is false. Even with C# being first class support in Unity they've decided against it due to quirks in restricting it, plus it being too hard for brainlets to learn since it is still a full-fledged OOP language. Lua was ofcourse heavily discussed as it's defacto THE scripting language especially for games.
However, most recent efforts are put into setting up Duktape (Javascript). It's highly familiar to many more people and makes more sense than Lua.

Hi /vrg/

I made a first attempt at creating clothing shading and normal maps from scratch. Also did the weight painting manually which kinda sucked. Did some patch job retopology but I think a full mesh redo from scratch is going to be needed to fix certain issues. I overlaid some extra normal maps and made some animations bound to avatar contact distance parameters to adjust the look based on the angle of each leg.

Ultimately it still needs a lot of polishing and it was a pretty decent chunk of hours for something I doubt anybody will ever actually be in a position to notice in-game, but I suppose there's value in the learning.
