I don't really know how well world links work now that they've been changed to locked/unlocked versions. I don't think you can join a locked link if you have no friends there and I think only a world owner can obtain an unlocked link. I know these statements are practically heresy around here, but I don't much like drinking in VR. You have to drink extra to get drunk because of the dulling effect that the headset has. And then when you take it off to pee or something you realize that you're way more smashed than you wanted to be. Then you put it on and you're barely buzzing and have to drink again. I don't need the social lubrication and I don't like getting blackout drunk. It just makes more sense to not drink.

The retarded part is that it suddenly punishes you with instant death for not knowing that the length of the correct staircase always has a maximum of 8 floors so there's no reason to go further than that.

Get a job.
The biggest hurdle will not be the VR setup, but the hardware needed to run it. If you already have a GTX 1080 or better, 16 GB of RAM and a decent processor from not too long ago, you can just get a Quest 2. If you don't have that, then you will need a good gaming PC first that can run VR
If your job does not pay you high enough to get a budget option like the Quest 2 then I don't know what to tell you.

Vive - the most reliable accurate tracking.

Tundras - in theory are good as vive, but have big QA issues, a lot of people get a bad unit and then spend months on RMAs

Slime/any other IMU based - inacurate tracking, legs will feel floaty/slidy, depending on IMU used and activity level you WILL have to reset tracking every 10-30 minutes.

All they need to track is to have at least one steamvr basestation turned on in your room

One is usually not enough for 360 coverage, so default is 2 lighthouses in opposite corners. You can have more than 2 for more coverage of the 2.0 lighthouses (Index, Vive Pro, curved front surface) You cannot mix and match 1.0 and 2.0 lighthouses.
