Well lads, looks like my CV1 is finally dying... Screen is jittery as fuck. it's dropping frames like crazy when I move my head, and it's like the previous frame appears for a split second just before the next frame, it's really disorienting.

It's a paint in the dick to get everything working. You have to get content manager to install cars, but you have to pay up to get the premium version that can install tracks. Then you have to set up the weather mod which sometimes work. And you need to set up your wheel. For whatever reason my wheel, the Logitech G29, isn't recognized at all even with the drivers installed on Windows 10 and the built in preset for it. I had to map everything manually, and even then there's no way to get the handbrake to work. I can't use a button to represent it as in any other driving game, a physical handbrake is required. Skyrim and VAM were less of a headache than Assetto as they at least have auto installers for modded setups at this point. You buy Assetto Corsa Ultimate. Install Content Manager and CSP in it. Free content manager can install cars and tracks. To setup your wheel you just go Content Manager input settings and setup driving axis, break and gas axis, clutch axis. Then go to buttons tab and setup your gearbox/lights/horn/handbreak. Then go to video settings and select video output as "OpenVR" and you are ready to drive, easy.

Alternatively, you can setup handbrake as a an axis instead of a button, but it's on the seperate tab, most likely local retard kept trying to map a button as an axis.

Then you can just drag and drop .zip files into content manager to install cars/tracks. You don't need weather/sol mod really, it's up to you.

Gamepad will work, but Assetto doesn't have any gamepad assists, so accuracy of the stick is just not enough for steering.

I've talked six friends into buying a wheel and playing Assetto with me. It takes about 20 minutes to go over most of this with them but if you're on your own it's probably more like an hour or so.

Custom Shaders Patch version 0.1.78 is required at the minimum but I suggest 0.1.79 or higher. If there is a car you want to run, let me know, but please test them yourself beforehand. Candidate cars should have LODs and working wipers and lights at a minimum but I may make exceptions. Extended physics are currently disabled since not every car supports it, so if it's raining, note that it's visual only and does not effect handling. Traffic is enabled but Nanamagari is a low traffic area, so don't expect to see a lot of it.

IIRC, the documentation specifies download links are supposed to be direct access to archive files, so I'm not surprised if most of them didn't download automatically. They're more just to provide a source to acquire them manually. I don't have an FTP server setup (again, laziness) but will look into it somewhere down the line.

Weird, I'm not sure what the difference would be either. I don't believe sharemods mentions when the uploader modifies the file, but if it does, it hasn't been touched in a while. Maybe there was some sort of patch since? Or they just realized the file wasn't as well compressed as it could be. Google would show a modified date, I don't feel like signing in to check for something like that though. If there is a version difference, AFAIK it shouldn't matter with the server. Speaking of which, IDK if I should have to say it, but I burned some time setting up teleport locations for the track yesterday, so yeah - you can teleport around the map via the comfy map app or default CSP chat app (as well as changing car colors). I screwed up my sleep schedule trying to make a better AI spline for the traffic - the one I downloaded is atrocious. No luck, unfortunately, so it will just have to do unless someone else is willing and able to bang one out. Assetto crashed and the spline was corrupted both times I tried for some reason, guessing it might have something to do with the CSP build I'm using.

Unless there are potentially sketchy third-party replacement batteries available, it'll become worthless like smartphones. Logitech's drivers can be stored locally, so if they ever go up in flames, you're still golden. Valve requires you to download their software too, but they'll probably never go out of business no matter what they do since their income is almost entirely from leeching off everyone else on their platform. So long as other developers are still shitting out games and people are buying them, they'll continue to prosper indefinitely and will likely keep the software updated to work with newer operating systems as they do with their games. Same with HP, probably HTC and others - once they decide to axe the drivers from their servers, their respective hardware are useless. I never liked the original PCars much, but it's better than nothing. The version on there is just a demo though.
iRacing needs a subscription, although you could try a free trial if there's not an account on there. I don't think it'd be good as a first sim since it's mostly focused on online competition and most of the content is expensive DLC, but you could still play around with it.
Don't really know anything about Raceroom.
Assetto or Dirt Rally 2.0 would be ideal if those were available, not sure if any of the other computers have different stuff.

Well with the Oculus Go once they discontinued that they put out an "Unlocked OS" with root access, but that was something John Carmack pushed for so with him now gone I'm not sure something similar would happen if the Quest headsets were all dropped.

The bottleneck now is apparently their custom trackers; the controller + adapter kits are supposedly shipping smoothly.

While we're on the subject, I had a chance to try the Pico4 again today, to compare against the Quest3 I returned.
Zero vignetting, pretty much uniform brightness across the whole image.
I'm going to assume the vignetting and darkening-when-outside-the-sweetspot issues on the Quest3 is a result of whatever they've done to the lenses to minimize the internal reflections. Quest Pro is probably bright enough for it to not be an issue.
I guess it's just another tradeoff, but the Quest3's lens issues certainly aren't inherent to pancake lenses.
Also reconfirmed that I could not see the edge of the display with the Pico4, unlike the Quest3.
Hand tracking has improved a bit too, putting it somewhere between the Quest1 and Quest2. Can kinda cope with overlapping hands, as long as they're flat'ish

You're paying ~300 bucks after selling your Quest 2 for the upgrade, which isn't particularly expensive but is also fairly marginal if you aren't running the beefiest of computers to already handle the FPS at max resolutions.
