I've never owned a VR headset but am tempted to buy the quest 3 for PCVR. Any cool games you guys can reccomend? How's that contractors/pavlov game? I bought Saints and Sinners and Alyx in the sale, also Virtual Desktop.

Is watching media on the headset good? Can i stream my plex server to it? Can i set a surrounding, like the woods or mars or whatever?

For the Quest 3, just use Virtual Desktop for everything, especially if you have a wireless router near your setup. Half Life Alyx and Beat Saber are the gotos still in terms of games. There's a VR mode for No Man's Sky. There are VR mods for Half Life 2, Deep Rock Galactic, Payday 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and etc... For surroundings, I unironically recommend VRChat even if it's just going to be you in an instance. There's so much content on there at this point that it's unmatched for that kind of thing. For watching media and browsing, you can get something like XSOverlay and pop up your desktop anywhere in 3D space and watch stuff.

the meta version of virtual desktop doesn't allow you to download community made environments, (it does come with some good ones, a big theater, home theater, space etc) but if you really wanted to watch a movie on a volcano or something with quest 3 probably could just hop in vrchat and use an overlay
watching media on it isn't too shabby, as long as you swap out the default headstrap. I found it insanely uncomfortable for everything except laying down.
there's nothing sticking up in the back so it's actually decent for laying in bed, but so uncomfortable outside of that use.

There's a whole lot of that going on in VRC, sure, just like any other chat room. But because it's a platform that's has been popular for over 7 years, there's a lot of content that's been uploaded to it. You can literally spend hours by yourself just looking at random 3D environments people have uploaded. There's even game rips from basically any game you can think of. As for media, VRChat actually has its own video player that takes youtube/twitch links. But if you don't need syncing with other people, you can just pop up a desktop window using XSOverlay as I said, and just play some media direct from something like VLC or your desktop media player of choice.

After some tests I've concluded that I can in fact get unlimited PCVR play time on my Quest 3. The issue that I think makes me run out of battery is the cheap link cable I bought (pic related): it seems it just doesn't deliver enough power to my headset; which is weird because its advertised specs seem to be enough for the Quest 3. If I exclusively plug in my Quest 3 to to the wall and use Air Link instead I never see the battery percentage reduce.

Any recommendations on a better Link cable would solve this issue? I'm from Spain btw.

I've seen a few people saying Q3 is a thirsty girl. The Q2 needed at least 10W which some USB ports could do but Q3 seems like it needs 15-20+. You can look at your motherboard specs to see if any can deliver that much, else maybe look for if a product can merge a USB input and a wall power input into a single USB output. Quick look the wacom link plus seems to do something similar but not quite everything.

Why not just use wireless normally? You're unlikely to find cables that are going to be much more efficient with less voltage drop than what you have.

I've used the Quest 3's own 18W charger and a phone 27W charger. Both charge the headset enough where I never see the battery percentage drop.

The big link cable is likely only providing 5W (a typical standard electronics charging amount) because like I said, it's not negotiating the full amount of the connected charger. Managed to mostly get the hang of driving the FF R2; there's a spike of oversteer when you first start turning but then it goes deep understeer, so you need to get into the habit of turning right into the corner as if you're turning to actually drive right into the logs or whatever. The understeer then kicks in and you drift right past instead of into it.
Hard to turn hard into logs though, just mentally.

I tried Space Docker VR today. its pretty polished for a game like this. was kinda expecting something like that mecha game that was in alpha earleir this year in terms of quality. It has some fun gimmicks like time trials and blacks holes. Not holy realistic but good enough for gaming. Virtual controls are good and can be rebound and shit. I kept messing up forward and up/down. Scratches that space trucker itch.

Today I found a real hidden gem.

Cactus Cowboy game series. 2 of them are free on steam and the newest one Cactus Cowboy - Desert Warfare is paid - just came out in November.

Playing the first one (Cactus Cowboy 3 - Fully Loaded) and it's a pretty fun boomer shooter/serious sam like with funny cactus people. It's made a single guy and originally for quest, but it's tough and fun. Although graphics are extremely simplistic, but with some charm.

piano finger tracking experiment. Goal is to have the tracking drive anime grill avatar hands, eventually. This is with a leap motion, the og hardware from 9 years ago, with whatever the newest software is. I loosely mounted it with the mic arm above the keyboard, and set the software to its headset model, i.e. if I were hunched over the keyboard looking straight down. played a bit with a few camera angles and I think this is the best it got, video from the control panel with hand pose overlaid on the infrared camera view:

The speed is there but the accuracy and coverage is not. there are some weird dropouts right in the center, where I guess the infrared reflection off the keys interferes. This model also just doesn't want to detect hand splay as large as piano chords too. disappointing, but then again it is 9 year old hardware. maybe the newer camera is better. I'm temped by the zucc hardware too but I think it might run into the same finger splay issue, outside the training distribution.

That's unfortunate to hear about the tracking accuracy. The tracking in your video looks like it would be decent enough for something like general purpose gesturing but it's definitely struggling a bit with the more challenging hand poses involved with playing a piano.

is there an easy way in VTOL to mark/lock a target when my TGP is slaved to head?
so far I've only been able to hit shit with head targeting with my guns, and I can never keep my head still enough for a missile lock.
I know I can aim the TGP with my head and then switch it back to it's regular targeting and it will stay in it's current position, but if I have to look at the MFD to switch it, kinda defeats the purpose.
is there like a button on my controller I can push that switches targeting pod modes?

If you press the stick while the TGP is SOI you should snap back out of headtrack mode. You can also switch back into headtrack mode by pressing and holding while in normal mode. If you also didn't know, pressing up and down in headtrack SOI will zoom in and out. I use this technique to rapidly switch between targets.

The streaming stuff is part of the Quest version (and the only real reason to get it), the Steam version is just an overlay that hasn't been updated in a year and a half. You're better off with XSOverlay or OVR Toolkit for that and SteamVR has a decent built-in desktop view now too.

Very poor is so common that people will find other reasons to hate you.
I personally have very poors blocked and allow specific people when needed. The size and bone limits mean you don't strictly need to do this to avoid performance hogs but I also selectively hide ugly avatars so I prefer the finer control.

Very poor is easy to go over with the polygon limits so people who have reasonable avatars but are 70,001 polygons are in the same bag as the people who don't give a shit and produce performance bombs for some kind of cope reason like "It's very poor anyway". Most normal avatars will have an extremely predictable pattern where if they have high resolution textures, they will have a higher download size. It's pretty simple. Go check it out, look at the people with the 50MB avatars and check out their VRAM usage.
