VRChat won't disappear any time soon. Even if the company goes under, they will be bought out and then the enshittification of the platform will resume, just faster. Eventually it will become more enshittified, until people start leaving the hobby or start leaving for lighter and more open alternatives.
And you can bet that if VRC actually dies in any capacity, there will be enthusiasts working around the clock to get a clone working ASAP. In fact, we already have ChilloutVR, which really couldn't compete with VRChat around the time EAC was added. They have made some improvements since then, they finally have a non-shit voice system and they apparently even have Lua scripting now? Seems like a viable alternative now.
If VRC dies completely, you can bet most people will switch over to CVR, because the alternative is doing literally nothing and going back to playing flatshit with the occasional round of Pavlov.

Lavender was only the serious long term option; as a self hosted platform it would have been the most durable. We could have had a couple community ran servers.

The idea and concept of having user-run servers that are joined by clients is nothing new, we've been doing it since the original DOOM. You can see this in VRChat. While we have slowly gotten better avatar and world features, the platform has also gotten shittier. Trust ranks (which are basically social castes), avatar features getting more limited. Ads in your face, constant pushes to get you to buy VRChat+, the push for an "economy" and world monetization system, and the removal of modding to facilitate said monetization. Worse and worse performance, that they try to counteract with shit like avatar hider which only serves to push people into hiding distant avatars which also further limits creator freedom. Avatar cloning which, while fun, has also pushed most of the normal people away from making their own avatars and pushing the platform away from an "enthusiast" space.

For online shops the cycle is usually "appease sellers, then appease buyers, then appease shareholders and then die". For online platforms like this, it's usually "Gain userbase, abuse userbase in favor of shareholders, die".
It's the unfortunate tendency of online services to keep "updating" which actually makes things worse.

What improvements did we get? Well, we got Avatars 3.0 and Udon, which was literally years ago. Even then, Udon came with extremely large CPU performance hits in the vast majority of worlds. It is actually insane how much better performance gets when you go from a world full of Udon prefabs to an old ass SDK2 world even if the SDK2 world has like realtime lights with shadows and everything
They also removed modding which was a big source of QoL and performance improvements
Other than that, all "improvements" have been extremely minor, paywalled, or came with downsides. Everything has to be sanitized, questified and normiefied. Even though we didn't have our fancy pool tables in 2018, I think VRChat was objectively more fun for enthusiasts back then and you couldn't feel the crushing weight of the big corpo pushing monetization just yet.
