mod.io plugin was failing anons pretty much all the time, half of people in the room would auto-download a mod, half of them would not, and then they can't see anything being spawned when someone's using a mod. Given that we also want to have our private repository for avatars, I went for a full big modpack that contains everything we're using, it's the most reliable method.

I like it for watching anime. But I like using my actual monitor for video games as the refresh rate is high and HDR is cool and not available in VR.

If I set to 90fps I get 90fps with like 1/2 people then basically always reproject at 45fps. If I set to 72fps I get 72fps until like 4-6 people then start reprojecting at 36fps.

SEA Exploration Friends, what are your thoughts on using the groups system for recombining from smaller instances?

We usually join together again when I drop the same portal on both maps but this method becomes very unwieldy the more portals we drop.
Using the VRC group system for recombining the split portal instances we do would allow this to work.

I want us to be able to explore the good 8 player cap maps I've been seeing as well while maintaining exploration continuity and shared experience.

Then once someone finishes their map the trail blazer group creates the big instance map that can fit everyone else and broadcasts the signal to regroup together via the invite everyone button within the group.

i'll cover what i know about the final ik side of things. i'm far from an expert and there's tons of stuff i haven't bothered to try or am not interested in trying.

The core is a CCIK chain and then an AimIK chain for the last ten bones or so. AimIK is important because it means you can point the end of the tentacle but it's worse with rotation limits (which you want). Point the CCIK chain at the "wrist" of your target and the aimIK chain at the "fingertip", which should be a few meters away from the "wrist". AimIK is made for posing player characters in 3rd person shooters so they aim at the crosshair, so think of it like that.

Where the "hand" and "fingertip" are is up to you, but I just use a constraint that snaps to my avatar's (hidden) hand when a bool parameter is toggled. you could probably get technical use a blendtree in your animator and control it with float parameters for position relative to your avatar but I haven't tried. Don't see why it wouldn't work though.

Don't use FABRIK it has issues in vrchat that cause the position to creep up with each frame, after 5 mins or so your chains will be stretched off into the corner of the world somewhere. This bug might be fixed but it wasn't a few years ago and CCIK does the job too with no problems

Other things to do when rigging and weight painting, reduce each bone's length as you get closer to tip of the tentacle, it makes it look much more natural once it goes into motion

When you're modeling offset the suckers so they're not completely parallel, it also looks nicer

FinalIK is calculated before Physbones. Too much physbones will make it so delayed you will struggle to move it to a target effectively, but no physbones leaves it a rigid arm.

If you don't want to use finalIK, phybones could be used too, since they're also a kind of inverse kinematics. While they can't be pointed at a target yet afaik, you could just grab the end of one with an invisible hand and lead it around.

If you configure the group so you can join without an invite or approval, then it's also easy to just leave the group if you don't want the notifications for a weekend, then rejoin if you want them. If you post a link to the group's webpage, then it's as easy as clicking the 'invite me' button on an unlocked instance link.

If you're really afraid of invite annoyance, you could even preemptively kick everyone from the group after an explore session, then let them rejoin every week. IMO though this is unnecessary. Invites aren't that annoying, and if it is to someone, there's a "leave group" button in the notification UI.

FWIW a while back I did some testing with this group: https://vrc.group/VRTEST.0347 . It has one-click join and anyone can create group+ instances/portals. That way, if you do an exploration session and split up into small instances, people can drop their own group+ portals as needed. Or if you just get lazy and want somebody else to choose worlds and drop portals for a bit, you don't have to give permission (or have to post a new tracker or namedrop in the thread to switch hosts). However, since the group is permissionless, I turned off invites and other annoying features (gallery, posts, public group nameplate display, moderation, etc). But if you don't need those (and/or don't want to pay for vrc+), anyone should feel free to use that group to host some ad-hoc exploration. Or at least to kick the tires on using groups before setting one up yourself.

Any modern PC scene can have basically infinite baked lights for no performance hit. It depends on a lot of things, generally you will make a PC version and a Quest version of the same avatar then upload them to the same Blueprint ID. Restricting a PC avatar to 20k triangles and no shaders seems like too great of a cost.
A zero toggle avatar is very easy to optimize because you can bake everything into a single skinned mesh and delete a huge amount of geometry. For example if the avatar has shoes you can delete the feet. If it has hair you can delete the back of the head. If it is wearing clothes you can delete huge sections of the body. Even with these tricks you are not going to get most PC avatars below 20k without decimation or manual editing of the mesh.
I've given up on quest because if you try to do anything interesting synchronizing the animator parameters across platforms and testing everything works both locally and remote is so painful it might as well be impossible.
To be honest VRChats insistence on growing userbase by reaching for increasingly accessible platforms has been absolute cancer to both the player and creator experience. I'm pretty sure they are just trying to scam investors by double/triple counting every user by treating every one of your logins as its own independent account (vrchat, steam, meta logins all work and count as separate accounts).
So fuck questies they don't deserve to see shit.

If you hang around trash sure but the majority of older non trash frequenters who have been around a while tend to put some effort into optimization in. The real walking frame nukes are usually the massive slampig avatars with 50 outfits or more particularly when people like dyemond over engineer/test random stuff and put retarded shit like real time lighting on their avatar to decrease the average fps of the instance by 10. I'd call that the minority though. Nearly everyone who actually works in blender tends to be passably optimized and many will shame the worst offenders. Much easier than it used to be with the newer settings.

If you're doing a single outfit, it's not that hard to make a good version of it that you can have a standalone avatar for the times you need it even if you're walking around as a very poor for the majority of the time as long as you're not an egregiously very poor. They really need to change the tri limits so you don't nosedive from good to very poor at 70k+1 tris, since that will fuck most things and then you're less incentivized to fix the rest.

Are there any OpenVR overlays that let you do keypresses via something like a Steam input touch menu? I want to be able to easily bring up a numpad/weapon wheel or something on the fly so I can switch weapons easily in Quake or whatevs. Valve did such a good job with the touch menu system on the Steam Deck so I can play things like city builders comfortably there.

Love me some VTOL VR, if you enjoy flight sims and want a better understanding of jet (or helicopter) combat, or has some modicum of interest in DCS without learning the tedium of the actual startup procedures of jets I'd say it's worth it. I'm only around the 70 hrs mark myself played a bunch of single player because I figured the community would be mostly sweats but I've found in most co-op lobbies the folks are relatively chill beside the odd sperg or two which know the entire military brevity code list by heart and get slightly offended if you don't know the difference between a paveway and a pickle. Another plus being the very low percentage of children as most get filtered out by the controls but if you have the intelligence on how to wipe your own ass and cover your mouth when you cough it's not really hard to get competent.

This general is literally just 90% VRChat. There's hardly any point being here if you're not into that.

Consider shader as a program that takes input and does things to how things are rendered. In that case, your material would be input settings for that program. You don't want to look for a specific transparent shader because every popular vrc shader has some kind of transparency handling, you want to set your material (input for shader) to behave in a way that handles transparencies. I believe Poyomi has presets for transparency, on top of the settings window when you'll open the material, that would be the quickest way to get started.

Sounds about right if you have a single mesh for the whole avatar. The easiest way to go around it would be either splitting mesh by materials in cats, or, if necessary:
>open mesh in edit mode
>select some random vertices on hair mesh
>hold ctrl+numpad plus button
>adjacent vertices will be selected
>it shouldn't spill over outside of hair because hair is rarely connected to rest of the avatar with actual mesh elements
>now you have an easy way to select vertices you want, you can take it from here for sure

Optimization is blender territory, though there are tools such as

that could help you. But for now, maybe focus on those face bits, fiddle around with material, wiggle sliders and see what happens, get comfortable. One thing you probably want to fix is that your original avatar's screenshot had dark orange tint to your shadow, and your version is plain black, black shadows never actually work in reality, you always want a darker tint of the color that shadow is casted on.

my personal opinion is that liltoon is a bit more self-explanatory than poyomi, but i don't think it's a big deal. you can play around with either and you'll learn your way around it eventually
