>face tracker in two weeks edition
>no mention of lighthouse compatibility
hope you enjoy your $1000 paperweights, no refunds btw
I'm legitimately sad because of valve announcing how shit the steam frame is and ending index controllers.
>>546308557
>>546308629
t. bigshit beyond poo buyers remorse
this is all just preamble to 2028 when they release Full-life and steamOS for PC and gabe gets his big meaty claws around bill gates pencil neck
total gabe supremacy
Stop playing vr chat. Lavender is better.
The steam frame looks like an excellent well polished 2023 headset.
wish they released lighthouse version of the new controllers
stuck with cuckles forever
When I purchased my quest pro sometime last year (600€, ~700$), I thought I would regret it. I thought the Deckard would drop and I'd kick myself to see it have OLED, native face tracking, native lighthouse support while still being wireless. I was honestly so ready to cry, shelf my qpro and just drop another 1,000$ straight up.
Today, I feel nothing. This headset is junk meant for a target market that will use VR once and then throw it into the cupboard. I know a bunch of tech enthusiast irl from work and similar who have VR headsets and they treat it like that. They wear it maybe three times a year. That's your target market, not the daily driver AGP vrtroons (me).
Gaben is a nigger and I cast myocarditis upon him, he can go join Jelly in the pearly gates. Fucking TRASH.
>>546308940
Would be nice actually, but it would require a complete redesign.
I don't mind lack of face tracking because nobody even looks at me and i wear my anxiety mental breakdown on my face 24/7 anyway
>>546308557
on one hand i don't have to have a panic attack wondering if they're going to have blinking red light of death every time i get on vr, on the other thyre going to be obsolete. man, dont even get me started if they start no longer selling index cables. thts my biggest fear. i can maybe get out 2 more years of my current one but who knows how much they'll go for offmarket. too grim to think about
Meanwhile me here still waiting for Shitfall Flip controllers
>>546308965
>have OLED, native face tracking, native lighthouse support while still being wireless
You should have paid attention to the leaks instead of expecting fantasy shit. But I supposed living in a fantasy land of delusion is par for the course for trannies.
>D and S made a bet a year ago if SteamFrame was releasing in 2025 or 2026
>loser has to suck the others real cock
Oh S oh dear lol!!!!
>>546309141
Who?
>>546308452 (Cross-thread)
I wonder if you can still play PCVR only worlds on a frame headset? Wonder how that's going to work out.
Thanks for coming to photos! Use this as an anchor post.
>>546309087
how dare I dream of a product to actually have features i want
>>546309282
Playing standalone on Frame is just playing your Steam library, so you'd just launch the PC version of the game
>>546309363
No direct Displayport is a dealbraker to me, I mainly bought VR for racing games, where I'd rather just plug the headset in
Gamer's Nexus' video has a shot of the Steamlink debug graph, showing a latency of about 12ms. The best I've ever seen anyone get is about 20ms, with 30ms being more common, so 10-20ms improvement over your average Quest 3 experience probably.
Elsewhere they list numbers as low as 8ms end-to-end, which probably doesn't take the game render time and such into consideration.
Might actually be acceptably low
>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWUxObt1efQ
>>546309781
ah yes no no no i dont want 2ms latency wireless i want to be cabled to a pc with the same latency.
you people gotta be retarded it has the same update rate as an index
Can't wait for people to buy the Frame + cube, launch a PCVR game on the cube and cry that PCVR games in 4k run badly on an RX 7400
>>546309363
I'm fucking glad volvo didn't listen to any of you retards, I don't wanna pay $2k for a headset.
>>546309937
no no no you don't get it he's a pro racing driver he can't use foveated streaming because his eyes simply move too fast for the tracking to keep up
>>546309937
I'm sitting down, I don't need to use wireless and use the battery. I'll use wireless for games where I'm actually moving around.
>>546309937
Zoomzoom babies cry whenever they see a power cable, rather strap 30 pounds of batteries to some part of their body (and run a cable anyways)
>>546310171
ah yes ofcourse how could i be such an idiot... i forgot everyone here is fucking max verstappen lmao
>>546309937
>>546310171
>samefagging this hard just because someone wants a feature present on pretty much every other headset
>>546308965
i would have been happy with an oled index
95% of you niggas sit down or stand still 24/7 anyway wtf do you care if there is a cable it aint like you're moving around
>>546308965
>When I purchased my quest pro
Sorry bro you got scammed but in the other direction. Enjoy the facetracking at the cost of every bit of QOL being sucked away from you by your hardware being zuckshit.
>>546309363
for me? it's a lightweight tethered headset
gonna get a real racing seat and recline very much
>>546310685
Troons coping about their $1000 troony trackers setup being obsolete
Alright give it to me straight then.
I'm still on an OG vive cause I missed the index bus and didn't want to commit to the frankenzucc setup in the hope Valve wouldn't be shit.
Now that it's looking pretty confirmed dogshit, what's the best option? How much of a hassle is it to make quest pro (or whatevers best from questoids now with FT/fingers I didnt pay attention) play nice with PCVR wirelessly? Is the bigmeme 2 (RMA lottery lmao) any better in comparison? How grim is it looking?
I need other people who have actually owned these things to feed me opinions.
DON'T IGNORE ME I NEED ANSWERS
>>546310971
bad bait there's not even a tracker alternative
>>546311003
>I'm still on an OG vive
how have you not killed yourself from your hardware being older than a pharaoh
get an index man, surely some retard will be selling one used thinking the new garbage will be good (it won't be good)
>>546311121

>i/o camera slop
no thanks? this shit is way overpriced?
at least post fluxes oh wait you can't buy them because they don't exist

or wait and see if pimax dream air SE is a scam
or wait until frame comes out
>>546311003

>>546311403
your post is lazy repostslop and your idea of what makes a good headset and tracker setup is current-thingslop
>>546311003
Im on a CV1 and genuinely considering a frame. Even if the specs are outdated its still gonna be double my current resolution.
I would wait for the price, if its competetive then it might really not be so bad as a CV1/vive upgrade.
>>546309363
>>546311028
Erm no you can use the slimes the ULTIMATE vive trackers (they are called this because they actually work better than the flawless 3.0s) or even xbox kinect and play station move.
So, actually, there are MANY alternatives to lighthouse tracking.
Moreover, when Fluxpose is released we will have an even BETTER option because it certainly wont be another in a long line of disappointments.
>>546309363
>>546311275
>>546311116
>how have you not killed yourself from your hardware being older than a pharaoh
Gabe refused to sell the index to me until it was already ancient
>>546311226
No more waiting I need it NOW
>>546311263
God forbid I fucking ask for the opinions of real anons instead of 'researching' paid advertisement review shillposts from people who know they can't say mean things if they want to continue getting review shit before release and only use the headset for maybe 10-20 hours before doing their writeup and never touching it again unironically kill yourself.
>>546311476
Nice non-opinion postslop
>>546311504
>MANY alternatives to lighthouse tracking
I will concede on this point but not on the idea that any of them are better.
>tfw can't even max EA WRC settings with Vive
is higher resolution even good if you have to lower settings
It's fucking over
>>546311618
ah, yes, "real anons" who don't have an agenda at all
you either have been here less than a week or have genuine brain damage
Alright vrg
I lurk here most of the time but for now I want to get the dedicated opinions of only the most enthusiast of the market
We're going to be developing a Steam Frame Pro, but we're still trying to figure out what features and upgrades to add to it over the Frame Vanilla
What do you guys want?
>>546311894
But anon, just think, you can play flat games with your vr headset!!! It will be like a steam deck on your face!!
Just imagine, you can now have a vastly inferior and more uncomfortable experience with inferior controllers for just a few hundred dollars!
>>546311003
Index is an alright upgrade if you can get it at a decent price (don't let index users meme you into paying $1k for a 5yo headset)
BSB is fine too but thats still a $1000 headset + cost of knuckles and base stations
>Qpro meme in 2025
lol
If you care about FBT/Finger tracking Index is an obvious choice and if you want wireless get a Q3S and slap an extra tracker on it and you're golden. If you want face tracking too Frame is probably gonna be your best bet + better latency compared to Q3S.
>>546311003
The real answer is to buy an extra tundra or 3.0 for whatever Black Friday sale they have and wait and see.
They keep their value pretty well so you have nothing to lose especially if you are already in the base station ecosystem.
>>546311894
waggleslop is over
reclinechads won
>>546311841
No one can max it out in VR, i'm running low-medium on 3080ti. Even if you'll manage to get good framerate in a specific scenario, two things will happen
>it'll run like shit in different weather/location anyway
>visually, you'll probably benefit more from no AA + high res + downsampling than you did from max details
don't bother, low details gaming
>>546311226
>pimax dream air SE
The name could be longer
>>546311003
The bigshit 2e has been good to me, even got lucky on the RMAs so far. With the price you pay you at least get top-tier support, they'll redo face gaskets/send free cables/rma basically anything.
>>546311546
I need chiffon K to step on me.
>>546308859
that'll be $999.99
>>546311902
>ah, yes, "real anons" who don't have an agenda at all
Less so than reviewniggers retard
>less than a week
Did you miss the part where I have an OG vive? Been here since the start bro...
>>546312086
quest shits out so many versions idk which is the one everyone uses for face tracking
i really want face tracking and dont really want to cope on frame getting an add on in 2 more weeks
>>546312093
was going to need to buy them anyway cause i only have 2.0s (formerly 1.0s until they ran out of battery life)
>>546312225
whats the turnaround time on the RMAs?
>>546309363
>Don't you believe in fairies?
>>546312412
Steam Frame getting a mouth tracking addon is inevitable don't let some retarded anons try to tell you otherwise. If Valve doesn't deliver (not that I expect them to) some autistic furry or jap will.
>>546312225
>whats the turnaround time on the RMAs?
likely depends on where you live but from their warehouse in LA to Colorado and back took about2mikuwikus

>>546311003
I think Frame has a good chance of being a decent headset, if display won't be shit and latency will be handled well (everything so far suggests they did some autism in that direction), this might be a solid Index 2, assuming it won't cost rumored $1200. But if you want BSB2, I have one and honestly I can recommend it despite shitting on it in thread so much. It's crazy light, image is crazy sharp, software is decent, customer service seems to be fastthough it's a fucking discord channel and because of that i feel like i'm not being taken seriously, but that's a pet peeve, I had no rma-tier hardware issues so far, and they send new gaskets on request even if you're unsure if you need one. It's overpriced, it's ridden with various small downsides, but if I could turn back time, I'd buy it again.
But don't despair on Frame just yet, wait for emotions to cool down and for proper opinions to form. This really seems like a potentially decent device to me.
>>546311961
Index but smaller and everything doesn't break after a year of use
>>546310685

The people who give a shit about wired headsets and latency are a minority of autists. Most people don't find 0.00001ms of latency completely unplayable believe it or not.
>>546312917
It's a quality of life feature. Much nicer than peeking through the nose gap or having to take off the headset for something minor like finding your drink or pouring another one.

i do want a wireless headset but i also want an enthusiast headset if i wanted some middle of the road thing then i would get a quest because that will always be the cheapest option

Really doubt Frame will get any mainstream appeal, it does nothing special, nothing grand, aside of yet another attempt of selling steam machines. Quest does most of the stuff Frame does, so if someone would be interested in what Frame offers, he'd already have a Quest. Sure, it probably does many things better, and PC flat gaming gimmick is nothing to scoff at, but imo this entire "steam hardware ecosystem" gimmick is not all that appealing to the average joe. Normies will hear linux and run the fuck away, PC vidya enthusiasts already have a device that outperforms gabecube, VR enthusiasts already have a headset.
>>546315965
you can have it back, you need it more than me.
will they call the launch title alyx 2 or HL3?
im convinced people are just shitting on the frame to ensure they can buy one on release lmao

stick with the light house tracking
oled screen setup the screen autists suggest
eye tracking with eyebrow upperface tracking
lower face tracking with the tongue tracking like vive / project babble
finger tracking
fbt hip, feet pucks included
we literally just want an index 2.0 that uses light houses
let me repeat that
A BETTER INDEX
OLED SCREENS
FACE TRACKING
WITH LIGHT HOUSE TRACKING BECAUSE WE KNOW IT WORKS AND ITS STILL THE BEST
PARTS THAT DONT BREAK
CONTROLLER FINGER TRACKING LIKE INDEX CONTROLLERS
FBT INCLUDED
not a single person who knows anything about PC VR will be able in good conscious to suggest anything else if that's the package of the index 2.
i dont give a single fuck about pass through i dont know why people want that if you need to sacrifice that for all of the above no actual VR PC hardcore gamer will care

bigshit beyond is awful and will die on you from sweating and youll be stuck with discord server support. oh and $1800 for just the headset oh and no real eye tracking or ft
qpro is literally a quest 2 with ft +100 pixels lmao
frame has literally everything we asked for and more -ft on release which is so obviously gonna be an addon.
and if you are sitting there thinking it needs base stations you are retarded beyond belief base stations are measurable less accurate and the one leg up they did have (update frequency) is shat on by frame also..
ts has fully convinced me that you guys are worse at judging headsets than shillseeker dude actual braindead dribbling retards in this thread.

>>546317263

>we
I asked for lighthouses, cables, and double/treble the resolution. Not a minor resolution upgrade, standalone hardware (I don't need standalone, this needlessly inflates cost), and FORCED WIRELESS
>>546316451
btw Anything less than this means your ideal target user "hardcore PC VR gamer" is going to hybridize whatever you give them in order to fix any of those deficiencies
your hardcore pc vr gamer almost 95% of the time also plays vrchat
which means they have light houses and htey will be wearing light house tracked FBT even if you make a headset that doesn't use light houses, like the light houses will be a part of the setup regardless unless you deliver some kind of full body FBT with the Frame Pro that is better than light house FBT
im coping that the controller tracking will be good enough to not have to trex in vrc... maybe there will be an addon for rear tracking...
If you just want to play vr games then there hasn't been any reason to upgrade your headset for years and there still isn't. You can be using a fucking vive and get the same experience.

How will calibrating to basestations work? Those cameras might be able to detect the light from the basestation and auto calibrate, which would be nice but i doubt that it will do that by default. I really cope they don't make you strap a tracker to the hmd...

Did you miss the memo? Base station tracking is DEAD. Get with the times. Yes, it worked flawlessly. Yes, it was easy to set up. Yes, it will still be necessary for FBT. However, none of that is important because, while it was easy, setting it up was like just totally too much work and inside out tracking works almost as well if you ignore all the problems.
>>546318527
the deal with them is that they sound good but aren't out yet and thus need to be treated as fake until they come out and get real testing.
Their announcement/website boasts about having 12 WHOLE BETA TESTERS, for context.
>>546318527
the deal is that they don't exist and you only have the word of the developer and his friends that they're as good as they say, you can't buy them because they don't exist and what you do get in 5 years when they're available will be inferior as a commercial product compared to whatever black magic prototypes they made to sell them

I hope there's a way for the new Steam Frame controllers to be used with multiple headsets if they're running Steam OS. I would like a new standard for slam controllers.

something dystopic about not having your own transportation and using a hmd to hide the black people on the bus from your view
Wait what's the point of advertising a vr headset as a device to play flat games on? Does valve think there's a target demographic that wants this?
If a subset of people who play flat only do buy it, it's possible they could be converted to vr and revitalize vr gaming, but I really don't see flat gamers buying a headset unless the headset offers something valuable to them in flat gaming. Maybe for people who travel frequently and don't want to lug a high refresh rate monitor around? But thats what laptops are for. So what's the point?
I just want a bigshit beyond with eye tracking, passthrough, and oculus controllers
Quest 3 is to Frame what Switch was to the Steam Deck. I can literally see people buy this just for discord movie watching togheter and using on airplanes, when traveling and such. Movie watching machine and play console ports.
No LH tracking is pretty bad, Valve abandoning it means no big company is standing behind LH, wich was an open standard that anyone could make hardware for. I hoped the Valve frame would be LH playspace/SteamVR native since Index was such a good FBT experience.
Still gonna buy it because I'm a sucker kek, but I hope it's better then the Quest/SteamVR hybrid that sucks ass.

Every single VR company is pursuing this demographic which doesn't exist outside of their fantasies and it's the people who will "casually" play vr. They have this idea that people will just throw the headset on and play it like candy crush except they apparently don't understand that wearing vr sucks and normal people do not want to do it. It's the same reason so much shit gets released with pitiful battery life and no easy way to swap the batteries; they apparently don't know people play games in long blocks and not 20 minute bursts even though this is true of pc gamers, console gamers, vr gamers, and even fucking mobile gamers.

no, a blanket statement that “Quest 2 has better tracking than SteamVR 2.0” would not be accurate overall.
Here’s the nuance the paper makes clear (and what other tests support):
>Where Quest 2 (Oculus Insight) did better
>Static accuracy & precision:
In controlled, stationary measurements, Quest 2’s inside-out tracking was slightly more accurate and less jittery than SteamVR 2.0 — especially in height (Y-axis) and short-term stability.
>Ease of setup & robustness to drift:
Because it’s inside-out (uses onboard cameras), there’s no external base-station calibration — so it’s simpler and consistent once the room is well lit and feature-rich.
>Where SteamVR 2.0 still excels
>Dynamic motion tracking:
SteamVR 2.0 performs better for fast, complex, or occluded movements (e.g., hand controllers swinging behind you). Quest 2’s cameras can lose tracking when line-of-sight or lighting is poor.
>Large or irregular spaces:
SteamVR base stations cover large areas reliably and don’t depend on visual landmarks or lighting.
>Multi-object tracking:
SteamVR supports precise tracking of multiple external trackers (hands, props, body parts), whereas Quest 2 only tracks its headset and controllers.
>Absolute coordinate consistency:
SteamVR’s Lighthouse system provides a consistent world-space reference across sessions — Quest 2’s inside-out system can shift slightly between play sessions.

almost everything you mentioned is solved by the frame and q3s lol. especially low light and large or irregular spaces.
absolute coordinate consistency only matters if you are combining tracking types otherwise you will quite literally never notice it.
dynamic motion tracking is also solved by the frame as its update frequency is the same or higher than an index.
multi object tracking is something we'll have to wait and see how they implement but to write off the best headset on the market because of 1 possible downside is retard shit dude. especially when every other headset on the market is way more copium than the frame is lol

>how well do the controllers track when they leave the headsets view
>can I deactivate the fugly passthrough when I play my flat games (in a steam vr environment or something), the demo video suggests that you are seeing everything in color, which you do not
>whats the price
It really feels like a "games first headset" which is such a fucking nice thing to see inbetween all those XR/AR, social, AI headsets.
Should the Frame turn out to be shit, there might be other headsets in the near future, hopefully
>>546328621
>reddit spacing
Wasn't even arguing with you. Just wanted a tl;dr of the research. I don't really care much about the lighthouse vs camera tracking as both have their problems and it's more about "What can you deal with".
Camera tracking on my quest 2 and later my quest pro has treated me incredibly well. My lighting seems to be enough and I never lost tracking (unlike the quest pro controllers, those track like hot garbage).
The Index also worked fine, I did notice that sometimes my knuckles or trackers sperged out, most likely because of some rouge reflection. And once you enter the "mixed playspace" rabbit hole and read up on how fucked lighthouses can be because of their micro vibration, which introduce movement, which introduce errors and so on, you wish you never started to read up on it in the first place because lighthouses are (even though they get hyped as some sort of holy cow) a technological dead end.

Now that it is finally announced I am pretty conflicted. Frame is pretty much what was expected from leaks so I am not surprised but still disappointed. Just need to decide if I go bsb2 now, wait for frame impressions anyway or keep waiting for some future headset. Was going to just get a bsb2 earlier this year but learning that you needed $600+ of extra junk to even use it scared me off but now that the frame seems meh maybe I will just suck it up and pay.
>>546329870
I'd say go with the BSB2, way better value.
>>546329870

>>546329870
If you don't already have basestations and controllers, the BSB2 is a tough sell. At that price, you could also look into the Galaxy XR. It depends on how much you want to invest in VR upfront. Honestly, the Steam Frame doesn't seem terrible for an introductory headset, especially if it's less than $1000 like Valve is implying.
>>546330461
>like Valve is implying
Was there anybody saying something about pricing?
The only thing I was able to find was the short sentence in a Verge article about how it will be cheaper than the current index. However he didn't mention if he was talking about the headset or the kit.

>>546330396
As an electrical engineer, I'm pretty confident that one could make solid state DLP based lighthouses that would be backwards compatible with basestation 2.0 hardware.
As for failure rates, after about 30k hours in vr with 4x 2.0 basetations, I've had only 2 basestations fail, one after about 15000 hours and one at about 30k hours
>>546331358

And all that for a VRChat display.

Idk how you want to get sold. Just drop in when it's being hosted and see for yourself. If it isn't for you just leave after a game or two.

OLED looks shit with pancake lenses. Ask any bigscreen owner.
pancake lenses absorb something like 90% of light, it is a cruel technology. With LCD + low persistence autism valve said the frame gets somewhere over 100 nits. 100 nits is basic bitch unimpressive SDR. You probably see displays that are 300 these days. HDR is like 600-1000+. VR has a real brightness problem unless you go back to fresnel or something thicker that doesn't reflect light back to the screen.

>I'm pretty confident that one could make solid state DLP based lighthouses that would be backwards compatible with basestation 2.0 hardware
Nah, not really. The 2.0 lighthouses rely on an actual spinning laser plane continuous analog sweep with super-tight timing. A DLP physically can’t reproduce the continuous, linear, high-precision laser sweep that Lighthouse uses for triangulation. You’d end up with a completely different tracking system, not a solid-state drop-in replacement.

I'm retarded. I know that there is a drama about steam frame not having lighthouse tracking and not having face tracking. People have been speculating about an addon to add face tracking to it. Would it be impractical to create a lighthouse tracking addon for the headset alongside the use of lighthouse compatible controllers?
On that same note, I see people upset about the monochrome passthrough. Could that port be used instead for a color pass-through camera addon?
>>546340935

A DLP physically can’t reproduce the continuous, linear, high-precision laser sweep that Lighthouse uses for triangulation. You’d end up with a completely different tracking system, not a solid-state drop-in replacement.
For about half of each revolution, the lasers are behind the spinning drum, that leaves a time gap during which a DLP based system could return to its initial position and initiate a new sweep. From the perspective of the tracked device everything would appear the same.
>>546341117
I'm disappointed that it's not some kind of paradigm changing quantum leap, but I think that I might be willing to cope with it. I'm a casual who's been filtered by the cables in the past.
>>546341504
Even IF your DLP could magically reset between sweeps (big if, because we need to assume its perfectly timed, perfectly synced and there is no discontinuity, like... AT ALL)
>no coherent, planar beam
>timing to angle mapping wouldn't be linear
>x/y phase coupling would drift
>optical waveform wouln't match what sensors expect
Even if you solve the timing problem, you’re still fighting geometry, optics, and signal-shape problems that make it impossible to appear identical to the spinning laser system.

>>546318370
i kinda expected it having no depth cams like Q3 but having not even color passthough is IMO a major step back. whether the hardware offering is good depends on the price if they come out not far from Q3 with much better GPU and software its gonna be amazing value if its x2 Q3 its not gonna be amazing value

if it's 600 to 700 and ships to more parts of the world than it's a very solid win. In some parts of the world, due to shipping and import fees, a quest ends up costing almost double, and that's money that the zucc is just leaving there on the table for gaben to snatch up.

depends on the productivity needs. For writing emails, power point, spreadsheets, etc, not much compute is actually needed. A headset and bluetooth keyboard would be a sufficient replacement for a similarly priced laptop.
for dev work, a lot more compute would typically needed, but there is the special case of developing VR games and software on real VR hardware, something to my knowledge just isn't possible on any other platform without side loading a file manager and a ton of other shit just to get things sort of working.

Expect ~$900. Valve has said it will be less than the index, and that's all they've said regarding price. However, I wouldn't expect it to be much less at all.
The price could change drastically as well if trump announces another surprise tariff because he saw a tweet about chinese chilli sauce or something
>>546361693
on my quest 3 I usually watch movies in a virtual theatre anyway, however, on 4xvr video player, you can play a movie in a passthrough screen and shit is cool and impressive
when I show off the vr concept to people first thing I do is play youtube or 4xvr videos in a floating window in passthrough, because that's what the future will eventually be, floating screens from confortable low-weight wearable hardware, in my head hardware that displays shit is just for when you are watching with other people, the floating screens in passthrough can go through/over your house or apartment wall's limits, it's neat
also passthrough is a feature in porn apps like deovr player, you only see the woman in your room, I don't think I ever nutted to that more than a few times as a gimmick, but shit IS really cool
>>546362176
i'm not american so tariff prices mean nothing to me

>>546362898
you'd think they might because you can get valve index controllers alone but i doubt it
>>546362898
Those controllers are nothing special, they probably add $100 to the price tops. Doubt they'll bother offering headset only for people who want to ghetto rig it into LH system, and doubt you'd get any serious discount on that.

You're missing all the non-screen things that the quest 3 does not have:
- IR illuminators for low-light/dark play
- Battery on the back of the strap for better balance
- Low weight
- TMR high durability thumbsticks
- Custom low latency wifi stack for streaming video (two NICs, foveated encoding, etc)
- IPD LOCK - an actual switch to stop the IPD moving around
- Dedicated dongle so you don't fuck around with a router
- Finger tracked controllers with real buttons
- Front slot for expansion (Face tracking, better passthrough)
- Eye tracking
- Hotswappable strap (presumably for index-style straps)
- Runs SteamOS instead of andrid locked walled garden dogshit
- Can run x86 AND APKs.
- High refresh rate and low latency screen

>>546371384
If you already have Quest 3, Pico 4 or any decent resolution PCVR hmd it's all negligible upgrades if you just play PCVR games.
It's a very well made Quest 3 by people who care. But it's no point in upgrading to it from Quest 3. For full lighthouse FBT users it's even more questionable sidegrade.
It would be a perfect HMD if it came out around Quest 3 release time. Today to be not a sidegrade it had to be at least 3k x 3k per eye to have significant incentive to upgrade from previous HMDs.
Today it's a good headset to get into VR if it's cheap, but everyone and their mother who wanted to get into VR already has a Quest 3.
>>546371780

Better FOV than 110 lmao
People who cared enough about VR already got a quest 3. Shit like an ipd lock or IR lights are certainly cool, but do they justify the "upgrade"? Not at all. I don't even care about resolution that much, the screen door effect is a thing of the past, but having optics that are basically the same as the quest 3 is pathetic
>>546372747
It's not a valid upgrade from the quest 3 at all. It's got lots of nice things but essentially VR is a visual experience and if they don't provide a visual upgrade then...
>>546372123
that it will have at least the 2025/2026 standard of 4k x 4k per eye resolution. But like index it has outdated screens on release.
>>546372747
>the screen door effect is a thing of the past
>Considering the Frame’s 4.6MP (2,160 × 2,160) per-eye resolution, I was expecting an image that looked similar to Quest 3’s display, which is 4.5MP (2,064 × 2,208). But I was surprised that the first thing I noticed was a somewhat visible screen-door effect (SDE), which is caused by the unlit space between pixels.
https://www.roadtovr.com/steam-frame-hands-on-valve-vr-headset-index-2/
So the Frame has about the same lens resolution as the Quest 3, but everyone I've talked to says its amazing somehow. Is it all due to the foviated streaming?
Foviated streaming seems to be a big deal, but couldn't other headsets take advantage of the software on steamVR or is it something thats innate to the headset?
>>546373059
It's a quest 3 but packaged better. That's about it.

It's a good foundation at least. The streaming, OS, ARM translation, are very nice if they do hold up. Hopefully it won't take six fucking years for the frame 2, since it'll be mostly a hardware upgrade, but it's valve so you never

>>546373223
Since some kind of mixed play space tracking is inevitable, will SteamOS being more open make it easier to combine SLAM maps and the like? While not an ideal solution I wonder how much friction frame could remove in comparison to the quest. Case in point; the Vive ultimates have issues, but if you could plug the dongle straight into the frame and have them interact directly it could make the experience better (will never solve the core design issues though)
all this talk about it basically being a quest 3 and yea that probably means something like low price point, high adoption, vale release game for steam os vr, sell game on quest 3 model. seems obvious and best case scenario this thing looks sick
>>546373819
>low price point, high adoption, vale release game for steam os vr,
Anon... You are very gravely ill but it is not too late. Come back
>>546373645
Nah, FOV is a really underrated aspect for optics. People who have tried wider FOVs talk about how great it is for immersion. Even just a taller FOV contributes a ton. Of course you're not going to focus on something in the corner of your screen, but just having your environment in your periphery as opposed to total blackness is super nice
sell steam game, valve. you know you want to do it. you know that steam = valve. you like it
>>546373893
taller FoV would be such a tur on for coomers
valve becomes quadrillion dollar games company by selling games on a gaming platform and then one day they deliver a bunch of low cost hardware and an operating system and then doesn't sell any steam os games because the valve staff are 4chan retards

>>546373819
The price is going to be around the index, so $1000. It's very much going to be an enthusiast thing like the index

>>546320695
That's just a 24-hour news cycle in the nextdoor app, which has the opposite effect.
The Frame is going to be $900-1000, come with zero VR games (or games made for it).
This is valve's second attempt at solving the chicken and egg problem of VR. No people regularly using headsets = no market for VR games = no market for headsets. So they make the headset be able to play flat games. Gets people using and owning headsets so that there's a market for VR.
If it doesn't work they'll stop trying, because they have zero financial pressure to release or make anything.
>>546374185
>the index
they didn't develop a whole operating system for the index which is named after their whole money printing platform, and they still released a game
you guys are all fucked you can't do anything

Valve doesn't make money from selling their own games, retard. They make money from selling other people's. And CS skins.
>>546374306
That was attempt one. They released a game and a headset at once. The BIGGEST game possible. Half Life.
This failed.
ANY FOREFRONTERS IN CHAT
>>546374396
>This failed.
did it?
Will other headsets be able to use foviated streaming, or is it proprietary to the Frame?
>>546374479
meta will invent it soon they will call it foveated social experience
>>546374470
Imagine trying to make a PCVR game today. Spend 2 years making a decent PCVR game, and then how many sales do you think you can look forward to?
>>546374649
they just made a gaming vr headset
>>546374479
You should look up what foveated streaming is. It tracks the eye to spend less time processing stuff you're not looking at. Headsets that do not track the eye cannot do this. The quest pro has been compatible for a while now.
>>546374716
They made a flat gaming headset that also plays VR.
You fundamentally misunderstand how dead the PCVR market is. It's completely dead. There's nothing left but people jacking off in VRC, and they're not there because they like VR they're there because they like jacking off.
Why is every youtuber saying that the Frame justifies a $1000 price tag? It doesn't look that impressive to me.
>>546374716
I'll answer the question for you.
LESS THAN ONE HUNDRED. If your name isn't fucking VALVE then you can expect 100 sales. Not a day. Not a week. TOTAL.
>>546374798
Because they're shills who are excited for the new thing, let it release and let actual people review them. Then you'll hear "just get a quest 3" everywhere
>>546374798
Why wouldn't they? It's their literal job to sell product.
>>546374783
>they're not there because they like VR they're there because they like jacking off.
ABSOLUTELY BRUTAL TRVTH NVKE
>>546374717
I forgot about that part. can you add eyetracking to a Quest 3?
>>546374960
In theory yes, in practice, nothing exists that you can buy right now or even soon.
steam link on quest pro looks horrible, I even set the bitrate and res manually to max and it still looks like a jpeg

it's not an AR/MR headset though. you don't need color passthrough on a gaming vr headset

Youtubers are not people. As in, I'm not trying to be rude, I'm saying youtube grew into such a massive business that if you open a video from anyone with more than a handful of subscriptions, you can be certain they're not voicing their own free thoughts. Whether it's actual paid promotion, or just a pressure to say what people want to hear so it fits the algorithm, popular internet is absolutely worthless in 2025.

even with the eye tracked encoding? I know it sucks dick on quest 3 since the image resolution they send is low as shit

>>546375328
a lot of these games are good but don't have the brand to charge the typical full price

Probs like 8k. Niche steam games reviews to sale conversion is usually 1:20
On quest store it's more like 1:100~150
>>546375439
I agree just frustrating that people lap this up because scumbag youtubers will send the clear signal to Valve that this shit should cost $999 despite coming with less stuff than the index. You literally can't criticize Valve in the modern internet without pissing off people.
>>546375674
I did the math on gorilla tag and the userbase:review ratio was about 1:10. That's for a FREE game.

The steam frame is going to singlehandedly save PCVR, just wait and watch. You all thought the quest killed it
>>546375530
globally, average salary for two weeks is $620 before taxes
>>546375834
you can increase the bitrate to 300mbps and it'll still look like poo
you can slightly increase the resolution by editing your steamvr.vrsettings and changing streamFormatWidth to 1536 instead of 1344
>>546376298
What will "save PCVR" is 10 flat2VRs working for a decade
>>546377830
This but unironically, if half my game library was in VR I'd only play that half of my library.
Indexbros... our response?
>>546378486
I don't see no games
>>546376298
At least they focused on comfort. Literally all I asked for.
The question now is the price. From the specs it seems they're competing with the Quest 3 so if it's going to be near 1k then I'll do a spit take.
>>546378615
It's 100% going to be near 1k.
https://www.roadtovr.com/steam-frame-price-cheaper-than-index/
>>546378675
>I take this ‘cheaper than Index’ statement to mean cheaper than the $1,000 ‘full kit’ cost of Index, which included the headset, controllers, and two tracking beacons. The Index headset alone, however, costs $500.
it can be interpreted a few ways
Niggas were really trying to argue that this thing should've shipped with light houses LMAO they really wanted a $1400 quest 3 BAD
>>546378750
>it expects the price of Steam Frame to be ‘cheaper than Index
The expects implies on the higher end. And besides, do you really think they meant 'Oh yeah it's going to be cheaper than an index without controllers. Or lighthouses.'
>>546378560
it will run half life david
>>546378837
They could be intentionally vague because they want to surprise people as well.
>cheaper than an index without controllers. Or lighthouses.
Well yeah, because it doesn't have lighthouses. Or fancy $300 controllers.
>>546379003
What I meant is that do you really think they meant 'cheaper than a completely dysfunctional paperweight'
I doubt the price is going to be anything lower than $800. The quest 3 is $500 and that's with less tech + more dependency on subsidizing through the store. $500 for the frame would be an absurd and unsustainable price
>>546379276
These are honestly the same niggas who were like "Oh yeah it's gonna have facetracking and 3k screens and Oled and Pancakes and an auto-jacker and it'll come with VR games..."
>>546378797
This thing didn't need to ship with lightouses, I just needed to support them.
The most expensive part of lighthouse tracking are the lighthouses themselves - putting those "tracking dots" on headset and controllers themselves would have cost them cents since it is a well worked-out technology by now.
Instead, the complete lack of it just alienated the entire premium VR headset fanbase.... a fanbase that is willing to spend 1000+ dollars on VR stuff.
>t. staying on my index and 3 vive pucks for another few years until something better coems out
The frame will 100% be DOA if they arent targetting closer to the price of a Q3 $650/700. They could get away with $800 but they'd fuck themselves over fast.
If the goal of the frame is to breathe life back into VR gaming with a modern device they need to just take the hit and sell it at a loss and recoup the revenue via steam.
>>546379276
>less tech
Quest 3 has MR/AR capabilities. Hand Tracking. Depth sensors.
The Steam Frame doesn't even have color passthrough. It's clear that they were cheapening out.
>>546379505
>>The most expensive part of lighthouse tracking are the lighthouses themselves
BRRRRRRRRRRRR
INCORRECT
2x lighthouses are roughly $240
PER TRACKED OBJECT it is AT LEAST $100. That's one for the headset and two for the controllers.
>>546379410
>having optimism and expecitng innovation is le bad
>>546379691
Being a fucking retard is bad, retard. There's optimism, and then there's living in a fantasy dreamworld where nothing you expect ever happens because you have zero comprehension of anything that happens around you and becoming a lobotomite would be a genuine increase in self awareness.
>>546379690
>>546379690
Be quiet the adults in the room are talking.
>>546379690
>2x lighthouses are roughly $240
NIGGA THEY ARE SELLING THOSE AT A LOSS
YES
IT IS REAL
Just because it is cheap for you does not meant it is cheap for Valve/HTC - thsoe things have actual moving parts.
I remember someone from Valve talking how they are selling these at a loss because nobody would otherwise buy them, with the hopes that the loss is offset with the headset and controller increased prices.
In any case, not supporting lighthouses (aka make them optional) just removed people like me who ARE WILLING to spend 1000+ USD on a VR upgrade but now I will just end up spending 0.
Congrats, Valve.
>>546379868
BRRR WRONG AGAIN
You also need the diodes and other associated circuitry.
You should take the FULL tundra tracker as the absolute minimum. And you know what? No-one buys them any more because they didn't fucking work. BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T SPEND ENOUGH.
I just wouldn't be so mad if it didn't take the so damn long for this fucking thing. The time between the index and frame is over twice the time between the vive and index. Imagine if Xbox waited 14 years to release their next console and it was just a more expensive version of Sony's offering that came out 3 years prior.
>>546379989
How much do you think diodes are you fucking inbred monkey. You're a fucking retard. Like i said, the adults in the room are talking sybau
>>546379949
With a tracker every headset is optionally lighthouse tracked. That's what makes the system good. There you go, you're complaining about wanting to spend more money on lighthouse tracking as an option, and you have that option.
Go do it.
>>546380076
How are your tundras doing? Can you tell or did you lose them in the space in your skull where the brain was meant to be
WHY DIDNT VALVE USE LIGHTHOUSES TRACKING WHICH ONLY 3% OF USERS GIVE HALF A SHIT ABOUT WHILE MAKING THE ALREADY OVERPRICED PRODUCT 40% MORE EXPENSIVE
>>546378486
>index
>mount 2 boxes on the wall, then use it
>frame
>just use it
>somehow this difference is meaningful enough to underline it
it's sad how spoiled with convenience people are nowadays
>>546380176
>doesnt answer the question
They work perfectly fine btw. I have more issues with my knuckles than my tundras.
>>546380427
And the PC? You're going to have trouble using your index if you forget to plug it into a PC.
>>546380427
you forgot setting up a custom pulley system so you can enjoy half of the freedom that wireless players have
>>546380435
>uhm asckutally it's not $100 per tracked object but $70 so your entire point is invalid
You pretending to be an adult is comical.
>>546380105
I am not spending money to have what I already have (Index).
>>546380654
Once again, how much do you think diodes are? I'll give you a hint, they're less than 1c per unit at the magnitude any manufacturer would order them. Same with the ribbon cables.
>>546380925
>and associated circuitry
This includes packaging. I get that it's an argument and you want to be right but fact of the matter is that lighthouse tracking is expensive and adding it is stupid. You are stupid.
>>546381001
>packaging
as does every other solution including non-LH based ones?
Are you pretending to be retarded?
Its well known that LH devices themselves are cheap as fuck to produce. The cost is in the beacons.
>>546381112
>cheap as fuck to produce.
52 dollars according to you. Per device.
Even according to your ridiculous estimate you're still a fucking retard.
If you REALLY want to pay more money, go buy a tracker. They're cheap as fuck to produce after all.
I thought the frame was compatible with lighthouse tracking, is it not?
Either way, it's retarded to continue using base stations when you can implement inside-out tracking. It's more expensive and less appealing, only enthusiasts care about it, which is the sole reason why the beyond can get away with it
>>546381319
>I thought the frame was compatible with lighthouse tracking, is it not?
Not in the slightest. They would need to add *checks notes* 156 dollars to the cost of the headset for something nothing but the most deranged of VRC FBT trannies would ever use.
>>546381227
For the HDK which is not mass-produced. Tundra/HTC are ass raping people on the margins for their trackers because they can. I guarantee that the BOM for total cost of the parts in a tracker is less than $50.
>>546381319
It is not.
THey did not have to make it mandatory, but they could have made it optional especially since it is clear the Frame is going to be right in the awkward middle between budget and premium.
mfw steam frame wireless latency will be on par with 90hz wired headsets
epic
>>546381425
We could ask the beyond team how much it cost them to do lighthouse tracking, since they ain't selling beacons.
>>546381319
It's compatible in the same way Quest is compatible with it, meaning you can align playspaces and use it. It's just annoying to see because long time ago, Vive released a headset with no LH support, and then they've added an optional face plate that allows you to use it. Then again, I can see why it's not exactly all that straightforward given the nature of Frame, LH would have to be handled on headset side as opposed to the usual PC side so that it can work without weird timing mismatch, I imagine the list of issues is far larger than what I can think of at a glance.
Honestly, can't say I care all that much, two playspaces to align are not the end of the world as proven by one gorillion vrg anons who use pucks with quest on daily basis. If anything, one scary issue I see is that this is going to be first camera tracked valve headset, so there's a chance tracking may be subpar on release, it's literally a brand new experimental product for them.
>>546381651
they used a tundra board
>>546381924
To be fair the face plate for the cosmos was sorta a necessity, the inside-out tracking on it was atrocious
>>546379820
You seem like a very angry person. Have you considered therapy?
>>546384148
Have you considered playing VR games
Hello, today at 19:00CET (2h30 from now) I will host a "YosaVR" dancing session.
>What is YosaVR to begin with?
"YosaVR" is the combination of "Yosakoi" and VR. Yosakoi is a (modern) japanese folk dance style, which often relies on using accessories.
With "YosaVR", we aim to actively learn dance routines; first we'll learn some actual yosakoi routines, but I'm planning to eventually mix it with other types of dances/songs later on.
>What does it looks like?
Here are some videos from when I was training it back in May:
- Easy song: https://streamable.com/0wxl7i
- Mid song: https://streamable.com/91lp9t
- Difficult one (no video editing): https://streamable.com/4b02tr
>What to know? How will we train?
When I tried to host it earlier this year, I made this document:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1m6DHeP7rt538M18IdRz6fAGeD_hIQvGJgBc7CtrWpTo/edit?usp=sharing
Even if some infos might be outdated now, if you are interested in the project I recommend you to read it still.
This time I'll try to also host it regularly on Thursdays while keeping the "dojo format". In my opinion it is much harder than both PyPy or ParaPara, so if you want to become good at it, you will most likely need to train outside of the regular Thursday instances.
>What to expect for today?
This time we'll keep on seeing the moves of "Street of the Soran": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBND5Ftn2bA
And we will keep on doing full song training on the beginner dance "Agara": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FweefSy68Y
Please note that dancing is an intense physical activity, so there will be a bit of warmup/stretching before we start, if you join late I strongly advise you take a few minutes warming up before starting to dance.
Sessions are open to everyone, pro and beginner alike! If you are curious to either watch or dance just join
