Tried it out. In objective terms obviously it isn't *good* but it is extremely cool and a very weird experience to be in crt vr. Seeing modern vr anime girl content in vhs mode is a trippy anachronism.

It definitely does not feel the same as slapping a 'crt' filter effect on a modern display, I don't know how to verbally describe it but it is unique and different.

Our GPU frametime drops from ~9.5ms to ~6.0ms a 37% reduction (or a possible 55% potential fps improvement)
Our CPU frametime is pretty similar overall, but still sees a tiny improvement from this.

There's a hacky implementation that... Pimax? made and then someone got sort of working with other headsets to force it in games that don't have it natively, but mostly, yes, it's on the devs to implement it. Fortunately, most modern engines have it as a very easy plugin or similarly convenient thing, so they could get it working with pretty minimal effort if it starts to become an industry standard. I will personally applaud ITR2 for implementing it even if I want to crucify them for a large number of other decisions.

Not easy, not as hard as it seems either. Once you'll understand the fundamentals, it's all about patience and sense of aesthetics. Just try it and see where it goes. Start with a bare minimum shit project for learning purposes, see it through to the end, you'll learn a whole lot in the process. Fundamental avatar logic is really, really simple, it's just that in 2026 it's buried deep under twenty layers of modular avatars and non-destructive flow so it may be hard to see.

If you'll keep it simple, you can do it for sure, just be patient and take punches from blender and unity until they both give up. It's really fun if you're coming with the right mindset.

Weight painting is super easy because you can just select loose parts with L and assign a vertex group instead of actually painting stuff. For texturing substance painter is your friend.
