You're not. Only real difference is you pay an extra $600 and in return you get a device that you actually own. But if you don't care about that then not much of a reason to spring for it over a q3 desu.

Now that the dust has settled, what headset/FBT combo should I buy solely for ERP on VRC? I know nothing about VR
I assume I'd be okay with my headset being connected to my PC via a cable (less long-term radiation exposure with wifi disabled? Sounds preferable). My PC's a fairly strong desktop running windows 11, if that helps. I'm looking to spend $1,000 or less in TOTAL so the frame's out of the question, and I'm against what y'all seem to call "zuccware" so any variations of the quest are also off the table

Okay so I want to get to the bottom of which version are you more likely to win the lottery with 256GB or 1TB.

Argument for 256GB:
- they have likely made ALOT more of these than 1TB ones, as we could see from the Steam Machine stats (can't find the source for this currently but I swear I saw it somewhere)

Argument for 1TB:
- although they probably made ALOT less of these, there probably are ALOT less buyers for these aswell

It's just that if you lose the lottery the wait for the 1TB one will be way longer cos they make less of them.
Some anon said that scalpers will go for the 256GB one, dunno if I agree.
The Frame is already super expensive, so if I was a scalper I think I would rather target the richfags and go for the more expensive one instead.
Please reply with your arguments anons.

Galaxy XR with military/edu discount, and preferably another promotion on top of that. You then call Samsung when you get it and threaten to return it, the jeet you're talking to will offer you another 10% off if you don't because that's the company policy. I joined the 1Tb list, but I can see where your arguments are coming from. Still time to change the list before the deadline, a Quest is already cheaper then some 1049 bucks frame. So overall it's a hard decision, in my normie circles the Frame have kinda not been a big deal, so I think the amount of scalpers and buyers overall is low.

And another new project i'm calling "SLOP IS BAD (woa cool robots)". Still thinking about how best to do the controls. Here gipity decided to bind the shield/gun hands to the virtual hands in a toggle system, so if you toggle off you can touch things in the cockpit, but also move your hand and rebind so the 'real' robot hand is in a different pose relative. Kind of weird but it's growing on me. That plus the 6dof movement kind of reminds of the ded Space Junkies game's sword/sheield, which was actually fun, shame it died of mismanagement/weird ubisoft drama.

Underdogs is OK but ruined by being a 'rogue-lite'. At least co-op is fun. Mechwarrior 5 is still one of the only decent VR Mech games, especially with them still making DLC for it so it has an obscene amount of content, and modders who give a fuck. Wish Vox Machinae had mods. Or a worthwhile campaign.

What gets me is that earlier they were advertising all their Steam hardware as working together in harmony. Another knock against the Steam Machine more than anything as even with all the delays Steam OS still isn't fully cooked. How was their plan to release everything later 25' or early this year when streaming and the standalone version of Alyx STILL aren't done?

I always wanted to pay extra for a quest pro 2 (that does nto exist) if they existed WITHOUT fucking facebook spying on everything i do.
This is it, i pay extra and get that a no spying from zuck cuck and some extras even like pcie slot for fun projects.
So with "competition" you pay just not with money.
For fags who do not care about privacy this is a good news as if next quest 4 or a pro come out with eye tracking they will have to cost less than steam frame to to be competitive.
I cant see any idiot paying 999 for quest pro 2 / quest 4 when they can buy no spy version for little emore

Look I wish privacy was a thing as much as the next guy, I really do. But when every game tracks you, your isp tracks you, the very website we are using right now tracks you, and even your vpn lies about not tracking you, your phone tracks you, your car tracks you, and now even your television when turned off tracks you, you already lost the privacy war.

I appreciate valve directly not tracking me, but everything else around their service still does

True, but steam frame does not and I would and will pay extra for that. Valve is not relevant, just option to have it.
If face sold "enterprise" or some such with 0 telemetry and shit for 2x price their next pro device, I'd buy it as wel if it's good.
Privacy is a fight. My tv, car, phone, etc do not track me.
Some thing do but i fight it as much as I can and minimize.
Don't give up the fight and especially don't sell for few hundred dollars.

You mean the existing ones that already work with other eye tracked headsets? The latency on those aftermarket setups is too high to be usable for those. It already only barely works on some headsets with eye tracking built in.

Aside from the mild upgrade in visual quality, the main consideration is hardware longevity. There is likely to be a time in the not-too-distant future when finding e.g. replacement controllers, new cables or new base stations will just not be possible unless someone new picks up the mantle. The frame is both likely to be supported for longer and has some genuine benefits in that the controllers no longer rely on built-in batteries that will eventually die and the tracking no longer relies on base stations with moving parts.

A carrying case also to protect it all even if you don't travel. Plus Kimtech Delicate Task Wipers which are great for cleaning optics. People use them to clean million dollar scientific equipment.

more 6dof translation/maneuvering. While holding the shield/sword 'hand controllers' you can still do planar maneuvering/boost with the joysticks on the actual controllers (but have to pick whether you do up/down translation or pitch on right joystick Y axis). All angular velocity gets damped fast (minovsky particles 'n shit), maybe could keep some autistic sim mode in where it's not.

Suggestions welcome, and also on what larger gameplay should actually be like. I'm assuming vaguely star wars squadrons "space battle", but I also remember 17 years ago playing shattered horizon and kind of liked the space shooty gameplay it had. The Steam Frame release really hit home how much AI is reducing quality of life.
It's like 50% more expensive than it would've been without the RAM and storage crisis, meanwhile there are less people who can even afford these kinds of toys because their jobs are being taken over by AI, which in turn means there's less incentive to cater to this niche.

I say this as someone who thinks the Frame is fucking retarded and has been, and will continue, to shit on it. It is an upgrade to the Q3, but it's not a 1,000 dollar upgrade by any measure. If you've got the techbro money printer and lack something to spend it on, you're not lighting your money on fire getting one to play with, but I do think that it's a very dumb purchase if you at all care about your money because you should either stick with your Q3 or get one of the various much more significant upgrades already on the market.

Galaxy XR would be the actual major improvement over the QPro, and while mine does have it's annoyances, the only time I've ever been tempted to go back to my Q3 was to use the Quest controllers for playing ITR without burning my Knuckle's thumbsticks remaining time.

I've said this many times, but while the sticker price on the thing is absurd, you can easily get 20% off of it with zero waiting, and Samsung is almost always running a promotion which also stacks with the mil/edu discount which you can get by just having a friend with one of those help you. With a 20% discount from those, and another 10% if you're willing to waste 10 minutes calling their support to threaten to return it, you're looking at 4k OLED at 90hz with eye and face tracking for a pricetag that's somewhere around the 1TB frame once you add controllers to the XR. It's not perfect, but it is very good for PCVR unless you want to gamble on one of the chink options, whether that's PFD or continuing to be a waitfag for the Pico Swan before committing.

I mean I entered in the 256GB raffle, but I'm a bit unsure. Is it still too early to tell, or are these reviewers a good source? I still can't find any info about simracing. Obviously Linux support is cucked. Maybe the streaming would be fine and not a blurry laggy piece of shit? I'm wondering if I'll be getting better framerates compared to a wired PCVR headset though, or does the Frame render the exact same thing and it just streams it? The G2 for example I think had to make you render a much higher resolution because of the lens design or some shit.

The VRC flight week map is wonderful, the unabashed love for the military industrial complex brings a tear to my eye. I don't think it's a coincidence it ends on the day Ace Combat 8 has the advanced access begin.

I'll take a moment to also shill Skyward Flight Media which does a lot of writing on VR flight games and even on specific VRC worlds.

I don't understand your point. I don't give a fuck that there's some people I've talked about doing this who can cross reference it with these posts, especially since it actually proves the point that I own one and am not just mindlessly shilling, and cheaper is always better then giving Samsung extra money.

>>581067960
Yea, eyetracking on it is amazing, I thought I would hate gaze and pinch as an OS but it actually works really well for anything less precise then typing on a keyboard, and foveated streaming is a major game changer. I can push my bitrate down to like 100 mbps within VD to minimize the latency penalties of using AV1 encoding, and the only substantial artifacting I notice is gray banding when looking a 0,0,0 black screen like the void when you're loading into the pool parlor in VRC, while regular dark scenes still look fine, and some small shimmer in the periphiral because VD doesn't apply a blur like Steam Link does. Steam Link looks even prettier because the hacked API made by the community pushes super resolution within the foveated region, but has some issues atm. Funnily enough, I was reading today and there's a Valve dev in the community discord that's working on making Steam Link work for the XR and he wants to piggyback off their work.

Face tracking also works super well, it's issues lay mosty in how it does the tracking universe; VD and AndroidXR combining their shitty programming to be fucking miserable at points, which is why I've been following the Steam Link apk development; and a lot of very basic QoL VR stuff like room boundaries

while i am tempted, going from an index to a quest pro kindve burned me out on leaving the steam-o-sphere and having everything just work, no 3rd party finagling needed or steamlink/virtualdesktop juggling hoping that the version for my headset will be fine
my biggest complaints with the quest pro is steamlink only giving so much bitrate and VD never working well for me in various reasons, and comfort/weight, all of which seem to be fixable with the frame
i dont need 4k realistically, 2k per eye is fine so long as i can get good bitrate, OLED would be nice but not a dealbreaker
also steam support i know is reliable vs meta telling me to go fuck myself and probably samsung or pico at some point doing the same

FPSloppa has reached mostly stable, functional state. It's not super optimised, fullbody is so-so at best and there's definitely some balance and networking issues but at this point it's feature complete so I can just slop fixes to bugs as they emerge. >does the majority here use the standalone client or PCVR to play VRChat? Does PCVR have more features and allow for easier modding?
>Am I correct under the assumption that 99% of Windows PCVR players are using the SteamVR runtime (Steam Link, ALVR, VirtualDesktop-SteamVR) and not Meta Horizon Link? Any differences there?
>Is there no way to launch VRChat with an OpenXR runtime/compability layer like VDXR/OpenComposite/Monado on Windows due EAC? And the reason exactly this works on Linux with WiVRn+XRizer is because EAC works differently (user mode only) on Linux?

2. Most use virtualdesktop. Those who use pico tend to use their runtime since that works fine, and those who plug a cable in tend to use meta link since it supports the cable.

>does the majority here use the standalone client or PCVR to play VRChat? Does PCVR have more features and allow for easier modding?
Nobody's using standalone. Everyone's on PCVR. PCVR can access more/better worlds, and better avatars. Modding isn't really a thing anymore.
>Am I correct under the assumption that 99% of Windows PCVR players are using the SteamVR runtime (Steam Link, ALVR, VirtualDesktop-SteamVR) and not Meta Horizon Link? Any differences there?
Vast majority are SteamVR due to QoL with overlays and extensions (XSOverlay, OVR Advanced Settings, VRHandsFrame, etc.)
>Is there no way to launch VRChat with an OpenXR runtime/compability layer like VDXR/OpenComposite/Monado on Windows due EAC? And the reason exactly this works on Linux with WiVRn+XRizer is because EAC works differently (user mode only) on Linux?
There may be a way, perhaps with the Oculus PC version of VRChat (is that even still a thing?) but I just don't think anyone really bothers. Only potential benefit is slightly better performance but the tradeoff is again the QoL you get with SteamVR extensions and overlays, since there's no alternative stack on Windows for that (like there is with WayVR etc. on Linux)
>Are there working examples or ongoing attempts of using VRChat with Passthrough and depth occlusion for real Mixed Reality? I do not care about chroma key methods, only real depth testing and occlusion.
You may very well be the only one here who would give a fuck about this. Have at it.
>Any custom SteamVR overlays or layers you guys run?
The two major ones are XSOverlay (or OVR Toolkit) for nicer desktop access and OVR Advanced Settings for Playspace Mover functionality and some more advanced tinkering/debug with pairing. Popular but less common: VRHandsFrame for live translation, capturing GIFs, and goofy AI image commentary. Tons of other more niche ones like OyasumiVR for sleepers, Turn signal for wired setups, etc.

Damn, every gun prefab I'm looking at on booth is either extremely over the top and requires extensive use of different gestures on both hands (which my index can't do reliably) and is also taking up as many resources as half an avatar by itself somehow, or is so extremely rudimentary that it only works on menu toggles, and it feels like it's impossible to find anything inbetween that just fires when the trigger is pressed when held in the hand.

i have a quest 2 , so anything is an upgrade. but i still kinda wanted to be blown away by what a 2026 headset could do.. like amazing displays or something..

the quest 3 seems dated and lame as an upgrade, and bsb2 ecosystem is like expensive discontinued tech you should have owned since 2020.

>You may very well be the only one here who would give a fuck about this. Have at it.
Are you sure about that? Just so you know: You can clamp the depth data from passthrough sensors to max 1m/40inches. The result being that anything beyond 1m (your arms reach) is always virtual reality while anything within the range gets depth tested with real reality. The artificially limited depth range (0.2m -1m) results in very precise depth data resistent to encoding artifacts. visualizing sleeves, gloves, rings or even fur over your real hands/arms suddenly becomes feasible and very realistic looking. and if you attach a tracker to a real reality object and sync it in vrchat with osc or whatever, you can do some cool things. wish I had a good example now. unfortunately all I can think of is attaching a tracker to my dog and giving him virtual lazer turrets that appear mounted on his back, while the non occluded part of the dog (like his head, legs, tail and lower body) are still visible. then have some virtual foes approaching which are targeted and destroyed by the virtual lazer turrets. but I guess it only makes sense if we have VR headsets for dogs as well. (obviously a joke, this would be animal abuse)

Quest 3 is like ~700 EUR here. Steam Frame is ~1200. I'd gladly pay for a quest 3 pro (regular Q3 + eye tracking and no zuck tracking) 200-300 EUR more, so 1000 EUR if it existed and that's close to steam frame.
Steam Frame is that and more for additional 200~. Simple math for me and seems more that just worth it.

Now if you're gona be a dick instead of normal conversation, go jump on zucks in your q3

Privacy is not a yes/no. It's as spectrum. You can absolutely lower your fingerprint A LOT. Example is buying steam frame over quest3(pro) for more money.
But yes, total privacy is a pipe dream if you wanna stay connected to modern world but you can always make choices.
Steam/epic game/gog?
meta quest/steam headset?
random android phone/linux phone?
windows/linux? etc
No choice is "bad" unless you you want more privacy and choose, windows over linux for example. But if someone is ok with windows privacy issue, that it fine choice as well.
Like ive said- id pay extra for a headset that is more private and has all important things i need and Steam Frame fits that.

Still uses a deprecated method of overlaying the AVP persona feed into VRCFT. Very scuffed and doesn't track many parameters, it is "window dependent". What does that mean? It means that the persona feed exists as a window in the AVP system, where you need to constantly face it if you don't want to lose tracking. If you move your head away and the tracking starts tracking your persona wrong because you moved the head, it will get very fucked, more than it already is by default, until you leave and rejoin ALVR. Pro is, it takes just a handful of seconds to restart, but still is very finicky.

At the current moment, the only thing you can do is literally beg apple to allow third parties to access the ARkit face tracking data. Been doing that every other month.

https://www.apple.com/feedback/apple-vision-pro/

Really sucks because it is objectively the best headset hardware wise.

no, gamers nexus tested the thermals and they were superior to the quest 3. The air vent gets hot, but that's the point. All the parts that might touch your face are cooler.

The diodes in your trackers either get a clear signal or they don't ; if they get a clear signal then more power won't help. There might even be more noise. Onboard storage will always be faster than expanded storage but also SteamOS is immutable so you can't install packages/apps like a regular linux distro would let you do, you can install flatpacks and that's about it.
You can technically enable read/write access on the root partition but most changes gets erased after a system update.

Because they can't. If the accounts share any addresses or payment details, or aren't old enough, or have any fake addresses or 'card generator' services that scalpers use they get disqualified. Best a pro scalper does is farm real people to submit requests for them.
And you can ONLY choose the 256 or the 1TB. You can't sign up for both.
Second:
In japan they didn't do a lotto. The 256GB sold out in ~4 hours. the 1TB sold out ~6-8 hours later.
The demand for 256GB is WAY higher than the supply for 256GB.

I like it but expect to spend 15% more making it reasonably comfortable. Glare is pretty bad on dark backgrounds with objects but I'm using the modded gasket and lens inserts and have mostly gotten used to it. The cables are like, 3 feet too short for comfy moving gaming so I got a 1m extension that has worked perfectly. Speakers aren't great but good enough. Mic isn't good.
It's insanely pretty though, no screen door, no looking through goggles vision, and it's a peak experience after you jump through comfort hoops. I have some minor jitter inconsistently when looking between two of my base stations and I have no clue what's causing it so it might be the headset itself like the video anon posted. But it isn't constant so idk for sure.

In /vrg/, PCVR is the overwhelming majority. For total population, the opposite. PCVR is far better. Neither option is modding-friendly.

>Are there working examples or ongoing attempts of using VRChat with Passthrough and depth occlusion for real Mixed Reality? I do not care about chroma key methods, only real depth testing and occlusion.

There are a couple anons who have worked on things along this line.

It's someone difficult to get direct scene data out of vrchat, but one guy around here does a shader-based depth read of vrchat scenes, used so that external overlay content can be occluded by the vrc scene.

If you're asking about using something like q3's passthrough and irl depth maps to do occlusion, that's pretty straightforward to do with q3 standalone applications but idk if anyone has done like a full integration with vrchat. Probably workable if you fork alvr or something and run it in combination with the aforemention vrchat depth reading techniques.

the biggest gigachad move is to pick up blender and learn how to bake onto new UV maps and/or atlas textures since most of the time they're shit
get thrys avatar evaluator and itll show you if theres anything you're missing thats taking up space as well and itll help with optimizing

i don't know how the government can hold platforms responsible for these problems but i do propose the following legislation at the federal or international law level for pedophile suspects:
1. physical castration. both penis and balls
2. ban from using the internet and also from telephones and possibly other two-way communication technologies
3. legalized euthanasia option to anyone who wants it

Yep that's me. It's is still unfortunately difficult, kind of at the edge of feasibility. The least bad technique I could think of was a shader that you add to your avatar that smuggles the depth buffer (plus scene info like worldspace camera pose/stereo eye separation/local lighting probe) into the corners of the submitted frame to openVR. Which at least on my machine (bigmeme 2), those corners aren't actually visible in the headset (they're there if you look at the corners though/really press your eyes up to the lens), but you can still read them back using the mirror capture in steamvr (and then use as a depth buffer/clip in the overlay). It's almost cool but comes with a bunch of caveats. Another path that I explored was that openvr/steamvr technically has a way for the scene application to submit its own depth buffer (for more accurate reprojection mostly); However, vrchat doesn't submit this, so you're still SOL.

Slopcode for this is https://github.com/hiinaspace/vrchat-scene-probe if you want to try extending it. Also related >>581022924 is a mod-based approach for other games like vtol. There's some earlier (2018) vrchat avatars that do a 180/360 panosphere recording in the same way by iirc voxelkei, could see if that's useful.
