Looking for a few playtesters for a VR project I’ve been building. It’s vanilla WoW (1.12) in VR, on my own private server, and you play it with your body. You pull your sword off your hip and actually swing it, draw a bow, push your palm out to cast Judgement, lay a hand on a friend to heal them, and talk to whoever is standing near you with proximity voice chat.

Everything is built around three things: fun, functionality and fatigue. Every move should feel good to do, it should work every time without going off when you didn’t mean it, and you should be able to play for hours without your arms giving out. That last one is the hard part, so a lot of the design is about keeping your hands low and your motions small, with buttons as a backup for everything.

Where it’s at right now: questing, vendors, loot, the bank, mail and flight paths all work. Warrior and hunter have had the most real play time. The other seven classes have full move sets but nobody has played them in a headset yet. There’s a launcher that keeps your copy up to date, and you join over Tailscale, so nothing gets opened on anyone’s router.

What I need tested: every class in real fights, anything that triggers by accident, how your arms and back feel after an hour or two, voice chat on different home internet setups, and how it runs on different PCs and headsets. You need a PC VR headset that works with SteamVR (a Quest is fine through Link, Air Link, Steam Link or Virtual Desktop) and your own copy of the 1.12.1 client, since I can’t share any of the game’s files. VROptician released a new frame insert variant with "better third-party eye-tracking compatibility" (i.e. doesn't block off half the light going to the eye) named vrchat variant

If you can live without trackers for a while longer, frame-tracker compatibility is likely going to be the absolute best on the market; simply because people can hack in other trackers. You could in theory just make something like a stripped-down controller with just the tracking LEDs and just attach it to your feet and hips and it'd be a tracker.

It's sloppa time! Grab the latest release below, it's different client. It has the server already preset so just click connect. Some basic controls:
- radio now has two modes - single click for squad, doubleclick for team
- you board vehicles with use button, get out with jump
- if you class has jetpack doublejump activates it
- you have NVGs on your cranium, trigger around head to turn them on, preferably not during day
- you have utility slot on weapon hand shoulder/hip
- some classes have shit stuck in their ass too
- don't bet on buildings providing permanent cover
- APC can carry 8 niggas but you have to get out to shoot anything
- that funny laser is really useful for making missiles know where missiles should be but it's also visible in NVG

I'm running LH only for over five years at this point, but from what I saw, hybrid playspaces are pretty comfortable nowadays with an extra puck that continuously syncs playspaces or even software that adjusts it based on IR glow from lighthouses. For the first time I bought a PSVR1 and tried a few demos and things out that I never got to.

My general opinions from limited experience before still stands that the viability for real games, especially when its not first person, is dubious, not to mention fatigue.

But I was suprised how good it all looked and worked really. While I tried out Kinect a month ago and was over it almost immediately, I was pretty blown away how much some objects near me and my general environment genuinely looked real, like I could reach out and touch them. I can onlg imagine psvr2, index, meta quest, etc are even better looking.

They only allowed 150 preorders but at least they're not shipping it until it's fully tested. I presume you're using an AGM-65 or AGM-114. You need to slew the pod to a target and then fire the weapon after you see the circle go to the TGP point and hear a loud tone and the SHOOT command. The AGM-65 is fire and forget, you can move the TGP somewhere else, but the AGM-114 is laser-guided (laser function is automatic you don't need to worry about it at this point) and will constantly track towards the TGP point.

ATGM workflow is select TGP as SOI > find target > click stick to lock it to target > fire when told "shoot". You can find the target by either using the joystick or slaving the TGP to your helmet and looking at the target.

VTOL isn't Ace Combat or Project Wingman, though they both have VR mods which are neat, it's a fairly realistic flight sim despite the graphics and as such, you're expected to work a bunch of systems because that's how real planes work. While there are some systems that are a pain and poorly explained, jamming being number one, weapon systems are pretty easy and just need you to poke around at them on the ground or read the flight manual (wiki).

NTA but this issue is very easy to detect. if your wifi regdomain doesn't allow 6GHz, Steam Frame will CLAIM pairing was successful but in reality there won't be any connection established. you can cursor over the link status and confirm that dongle connection isn't live. this failure mode is very visible to the user, which is a marginal improvement over having a fake 6GHz connection with 100% packet error rates.

It is in the only 3.2 port I have, no hub, 2 meter extension cable to get it further from my PC and give better line of sight (might buy a 1 meter cable just to minimize the distance since 2 meters is the max you can have before degradation starts), and my region does allow 6GHz and is set properly. The inconsistency, even from people using different OSes on the same PC, has been kinda wild and the only reason I am hoping it can be fixed in software eventually.

I actually got an Intel AX210 m.2 wifi card to try connecting to the Frame instead, since the Frame is what acts as the access point for the direct connection, and it couldn't even see the AP for some reason, regardless of if it was running 5GHz or 6GHz. Attempting to connect as though it were hidden didn't work either.
Wanted to try using that card to host an AP for the direct connection, but apparently there's a bug with intel wifi cards on linux that make them unable to actually host 5 or 6 GHz because of some """smart""" shit they try to pull that determines if those frequencies are legal where you are. It was crashing their firmware and removed from the kernel code in 2019, with no way to bypass it and set it up manually. Waste of money and time on that, sadly.

It took me some testing to finally get my dongle to connect to the frame consistently at all. I honestly thought the wifi chip on my Frame may have been faulty since it kept saying the AP was up when nothing could see it.

WoW depends 30 year old autoattacking idle combat mmo designed originally around dialup. You rarely need complex movement outside of PvP or dungeons, you just stand there and attack every GCD until the enemy is dead and move to the next one. It is a terrible design for conversion to "irl swing for every attack and ability" unless large parts of the core gameplay itself is reimagined.

I honestly think it's fine to just use a standard controller-based chorded hotbar of button for abilities (eg pic related) even in VR.

The MOST important feature for WoW VR is the addition of full avatar IK and then networking it with proximity voice chat so players can talk and communicate with natural language. MMOs are social games. VRChat is an MMO where you swipe or grind blender for new outfits. WoW would be improved by full VR "social controls" too.

sometimes i wonder if people even think about what they're doing. with yuki, i did try to get along with him, but something about how he's always so nice and excited to talk to everyone never really sat right with me. maybe that's just how he is, but it always felt a little fake to me, like he just wants everyone to like him. and i guess it works on some people. whatever. i just find it weird how things turn out sometimes. someone can be around all the time, then suddenly they're not, and everyone just gets used to it eventually. i know people have their own lives and all that, but you'd think someone would stop and wonder if maybe things got a little too much for them. instead everyone just carries on like usual. i can't say i enjoy being around everyone the same way anymore. it's not like anyone's doing anything wrong, exactly. conversations just feel kind of empty now, and i don't really feel like forcing myself to care about them. maybe i'm being unfair, but i think some people should think a little more about how they treat others instead of assuming everything is fine just because they're being nice. anyway, it's not like saying any of this would change anything.

VRChat! We have some custom worlds with bicycle prefabs that let you sit on bikes in game, and your up and down leg motion (sitting on your real life exercise bike with full body trackers on) gets translated into forward motion on the bike in the game.
