How bad a performance hit is one prop if my avatar is atlased as a single material? It's an extra mesh and material. I'm not really sure how to apply the textures to the prop in blender, and I'm not sure I have time to learn today, but I can do everything else including the shape key.

The draw calls increase by one for every material or dynamic bone or mesh in your model. Atlasing can take something like 12 materials and bring it down to 1, but dynamic bones are the real culprit of draw-call-birthing.

We'd add more, but the video sync player handles large amounts of tracks poorly. You may have noticed the world takes a bit to load, that because the vrc video sync player checks ALL the urls in the playlist when you first load in. All of them, at once. Originally we had 50 urls queued and uh, the world basically took forever to load.

The idea I run with is that your viewport ball is basically aligned with the eyeball. Of course, the viewport ball is smaller than the eyeball, so it sits inside the eyeball, contained within it, at the front edge of it. 2 spheres inside one another. This usually leaves the viewport inside the head (duh), behind the ridge of the nose, but not touching the ridge of the nose (as it protrudes a little beyond the eyeballs).

I am no expert on this (I'm not certain anyone is), but this set up makes sense to me. I think the issue is when 2 people have their viewports set in dramatically different locations, or one model just seems to start clipping before you've even got close (Dot's avatar stands out as one you can get as close as you could possibly want and not clip inside of IIRC) - I don't know what the cause of this is. It might be to do with non-flat face shapes. Might be nice if Tupper knew and could inform us.

there's a pretty good tutorial on vrcat.club on world optimization for your world, since it's relatively small id say the biggest thing would be- make sure anything that doesnt move is marked as static. when you select the object it should be a little checkbox in the upper righthand corner of the inspector.

non-static world+mirror is usually the cause of lag drops, because the game already has to constantly render everything, and then it doubles the load when you look at a mirror.

In Unity, select your model and CTRL+D to make a duplicate.
Select the duplicate, then open the Animation window.
Click Create and save your animation file as whatever you want to call the expression.
Select the body mesh of your duplicate in the outliner, and expand the shape keys on the right. It'll be called mesh modifiers or something like that, look around for it.
Back in the animation window, set the frame (the number on the top bar that you can edit) to 1. This should also start record mode, the red circle button in the top left.
Go through the shape keys on the right and set the ones you want to 100. They should appear in the animation window with a keyframe at frames 0 and 1.
When done, close the animation window. You should see your animation in your assets folder. Click it and set it not to loop - it's a checkbox on the top right.
With the animation selected, you can test it. Drag your model from the outliner to the animation preview in the bottom right. If the last frame of the preview looks like what you want, you're done animating. Delete your duplicate.
Find the animation override template in the SDK assets folder. Duplicate it, rename it whatever, and move it to your avatar assets folder.
With that override selected, drag your new animation onto whichever gesture you want to replace.
Finally, drag the animation override onto the Seated and Standing override boxes on your avatar's VRC_AvatarDescriptor.

Upload and test. See that you screwed something up. Cry.

To any Rift users who want to play Assetto Corsa, you will need to edit this file to get the game to show up on your headset, the filepath shown in the image should be the same for everyone and the settings can be edited based on what I have in the notepad. I followed part of an out of date guide and editing this file was all I had to do to make it work. The key edit is most likely turning camera mode to Oculus, I'm not sure how necessary the changes above it are and there are no changes below it, feel free to try leaving those at default and testing, I don't remember the defaults. Also, the standard menu screens will not show up on your headset, the game itself will only begin to render once you start a race.

I don't mind namedropping in the thread and enjoy it when people namedrop me.
The thing about namedropping is that it is fleeting attention and is usually just memes or a cute picture of something.

And more importantly, even if some dislike it, namedropping posts still add to the thread's activity, keeping it lively.

The criticism that most have with discord is that it will suck the life out of the thread and most things that happen here will begin to happen in discord. People will feel obligated to join discord or be left out, and the thread will slow down or die.
Considering that we pull a lot of new people from the thread here, that also poses a threat to the level of activity in game.

That's why it's probably a good idea to avoid having an official discord at this point.

At least I think that's how it goes, I never had much issues with talking to people on VRChat. There were so many people all standing around in circles talking & everyone was already fully engaged in conversation about custom avatars and shit. If they heard about /vrg/ from attending a meetup there's nothing stopping them from simply joining a discord instead and populating that further. Most user maps and players actually ENCOURAGE their discords in game for this exact reason.
