I don't know if this is the right place to ask or not
I'm working on importing some sfm models for vrchat, and it's pretty easy to get all the basics done. Bringing over the model/textures/bones/whatever is simple enough.
Thing is, sfm uses valve material scripting for some things, namely texture manipulation for either animated textures or blended maps or whatever.
Other than starting over from scratch using unity scripting and essentially trying to manually recreate these vmt scripts, is there anything I can do to bring them over into vrchat?

Look in the archive. It's one of the files in the SDK. The limit just checks against a plain text number of '20000' in there, so if you change it to 65000, it just lets you upload anything up to that with no question.

World follows the same mesh limits as everything else in unity. 65k = second mesh so get to work in blender combining stuff if optimization is important to you. Also remember a mesh with the mesh renderer component unticked will not add a draw call, but can still be used as a chair or collider or other physics feature. So you can make a room one mesh with all the accessories and then pile on extra invisible walls and stuff in unity to add physics. Just remember occlusion culling needs separate meshes for each area you plan to cull.

What is culling? Getting the mirrors right is a priority for me too, I hate performance killing mirrors. I quite like the ones in Nep Bar - they only turn on when you get close.

Toggleable statues is unlikely since I have so many. I was planning on putting a statue next to each group of avatars and have them in slightly different areas of the map, like some platforms.

culling tab in unity editor
first you want to select all the objects you have on scene, and if they're not moving, ie static objects set them all as static. for all objects that can be occluded or occlude, also set the occlusion object settings for them even if they are dynamic.
then under bake tab you want to choose the appropriate settings, which is finding out the size of the smallest occluder and smallest hole in your map, i mostly got the values i needed through trial and error because of difference in scaling values in my meshes.
then you just hit bake. if your map is more complex you could consider making occluders solely for the purpose of occlusion culling only and disable them after baking. if you have moving objects, add an occlusion area component that covers the entire areas that moving objects will exist.
Then use the visualization tab after baking with a camera to see it working. It my editor the green lines show the camera's line of sight and as you can see in the editor the objects i have on the table are not rendered. avatars will also be not rendered when occluded by that wall etc.
the area behind the wall is still rendered in my map but that's because its the same mesh, culling works on a mesh basis.
occlusion portals i believe lets you have occlusion zones that are active dynamically, ie. when a door opens render behind it, but when its closed doesnt, but i havent really looked into that because i don't have that behavior in my map.
i'm no expert at this so take my advice with a grain of salt as i may be wrong in some things.

Some good maps hide mirrors in areas because they set layers in the mirror to render only avatars and the room the mirror is in using layers, but i think not many do that and just think leaving the mirror in another area is good enough.

Alright, got back, started from the original dae file again since the last attempt fugged up.

The Just Touring map is fun. It reminds me of that Starfox-themed world or whatever went to a couple weeks ago. The riding felt really bizarre and the two of us had a blast with it, the motion was really something else. OK, so I've been away for a few days, and it is now time to ask how people are feeling about this Saturday at midnight being movie night in Bigscreen.

Meant to pop a message up about this much earlier, but I got very distracted/busy. Anyway, here is the movie list I got planned for Saturday:

Guyver: Dark Hero (1994) An action movie adapted off an anime, which features a bio-armored power ranger type guy who kills monsters who can hide their forms and look like humans. Has some good gore/fight choreography and stars David Hayter (the voice of Solid Snake) as the Guyver.
From Beyond (1986) A horror/effects movie based off an HP Lovecraft story. Some great practical creature effects, a goofy story that involves a device that allows you to see beings/monsters in a parallel dimension, but begins to change you. One of my all time favorite movies.

I think keeping it to 2 movies is best, since that was what we did last time, and everyone seemed OK with it. Any more and you lose people's interest and any less and what was the point? So let me know who would be interested. I think the next time will be Conan the Barbarian/Big Trouble In Little China night.

There's two things, you either go in pose mode in blender and play around with bone rotations or use muscle animation editor in unity to check how your wrists and finger bones work.
Cons of blender is that you can weight paint your issues while in unity you curse that it's broken.

Well, that's the issue. The bones are perfectly fine in blender, but unity throws a fit when I try to work with them there. It mangles the hands into oblivion and then complains that I'm breaking things when I manually put them where they should be.
Right now I've gotten maybe three out of 10 fingers manually put into proper position and functioning correctly in-game (again, even though they were already IN proper position in Blender).

You can use the Corrective Shape Key addon. It's under Community > Animation in Addons.

There's some ebay peoples that seel ready modded kinects - much easier than modding them and not much more expensive than buying a kinect itself. Might be worth having a look if it's possible to cancel your order!

Is anybody here still using an Oculus DK2 with some sort of controller setup successfully? I jumped on the VR meme too early for the hand controllers. I've found a couple projects for emulating vive controllers using a leap motion (another meme fallen for in 2014), but it's not quite working well enough for steamvr or vrchat.

I meant to take a VR break Thursday night to work on avatars and catch up on sleep, but atlasing broke my transparencies and I was frustrated enough that I got really drunk and hyped up on caffeine and stayed up too late dancing with /vrg/.
