Where we're at right now in the VR market. I'd say get in now with the Rift when it goes on sale. On the other hand there should be newer headsets coming out next year but they won't be cheap. If you don't plan on spending more than $400 might as well buy now.

As far as whether it's worth it I'd say so. It's giving me early proto internet vibes like nothing else has for a long time. If this takes off and becomes a thing every normie owns and uses I know I'd kick myself for not getting in now when everything is new and not a clean cut and packaged experience.

Mixed Reality is a steal right now.
If you're curious about VR and have ~$180 to spare, there's no reason not to.
Just be aware that unlike the Vive or the Rift (with 3 sensors), the Mixed reality sets can't track your hands behind you, and the cheap mixed reality sets have fixed IPD, so if your IPD isn't 63 or very close to it, you might have a worse experience than you would with an adjustable IPD set like the Samsung WMR or the Vive and Rift.
Bonus though: WMR has the easiest setup and higher resolution than Vive and Rift, and most windows stores demo them if you have a mall near you. Go try one.

Going through some of these old videos I had is really giving me a weird appreciation for how things have actually progressed. I remember when I saved this years ago it had really impressed me as a cool bit of futuristic tech. Now we got people who have spent most of their year living like this.

Update. Gave it a try. They were demoing Beat Saber with it which wasn't the best test of the tracking, but the demonstrator was chill and let me walk and crouch around the playspace. Latency and tracking seemed just as fine as the wired vive, but I did notice some loss of tracking (grey screen) when I crouched at the far end of the playspace. The wide antenna is good at preserving line-of-sight but when it's gone, the disconnect is instant. Thankfully, I noticed no loss of tracking while standing up from any angle. The battery packs are hot-swappable without messing up tracking once the new battery is plugged in. Like the photos indicated, the battery is a separate box meant to be stored in the pocket, making pants necessary (sorry lewders).

tl;dr there was no noticable difference in audio quality, video quality, or tracking, but it absolutely requires line of sight to the transmitter. Anons with large objects between their PC and playspace or who enjoy sleeping in VR would probably notice a lot of disconnects. If you have a clear playspace and mostly stand, and $299 is worth losing the wires for the same quality, then I say go for it.

Only thing is that your controllers lose tracking if you put them behind yourself. Where it really shines is if you have high end gaming laptop and want to move the setup around. Likely a weight painting problem. If that is the case then you should use pose mode to see if the arm gravitates towards or moves with any other bones, if that happens then you will want to remove that weight painting with the subtract brush. If the arm does not appear to gravitate towards anything but instead stays in place then you will likely just need to weigh paint the area to the appropriate bones via the add brush.

Tried that material combiner stuff (https://vrcat.club/threads/material-combiner-blender-addon-1-1-6.2255/) . While it saves you the time of atlasing and there is no quality lose, manual atlas gives way more optimal results.
Pic related, the combiner made a 4k atlas. For some reason my MMD model has a 512x512 texture that is just red colour and in a manual atlas that would only be 1 pixel. There is also stuff like the screw or the logo that don't need all that detail. My manual atlas is 2k and if I resize it to 1k in Unity it looks almost the same.
Still, it's better than having 50 materials or an autoatlas if you are lazy. I may use for some quick edits.

Could someone tell me how to actually get OpenVR Capture to output 16:9? The cropping preset 'none' is actually 'Full 16:9', but as you can see, it doesn't output 16:9 in OBS - the sides are cut off. Probably the biggest social cue I pick up on is eye contact. In vr there's eye tracking so your avatar can look at everyone at the same time and keep steady eye contact. Having someone look me right in the eye with their relaxed default expression while talking to me rubs off on me, making me more relaxed and open in response.
The other part with eye tracking that I know is not intentional on the part of the player is that if they turn their head away sometimes the eyes will steal glances at you. When a cute girl is occasionally looking at you from the corner of her eyes and smiling away it's usually a good sign she's interested in you and even in vr the impression is the same even when I know it's just a feature of their avatar's coding.
