If you're talking about the show's models, then I understand a lot. They have really squat bodies and far too wide heads for the frame.
Most of Hena's models on the other hand are just as quality as any TDA, boat, or any other base model.

I personally prefer them since they aren't as twiggy as TDA and I prefer animals over boats for my anime girl theme, but they have all sorts of little issues like every other model. Always best to suit your own presences though so it's not like one is any better than another.

yea well dynamic bones modify the bones which are CPU skinned by the skin renderer and after all those 4x4 matrix multiplication for each bone and then more multiplications for the vertex position the skin renderer does it then has to package that data into 24 separate drawcalls one for each of those materials on the skinned mesh renderer.
So it's all part of the same CPU cycle clusterfuck to get that shit on your screen in that one frame.

Couple other things that help make it easier are to separate the skirt (select it, hit P, then choose "by selection") so that you cant accidently paint other parts of your model. And set your view to wireframe, that way you can easily see the vertices you are trying to paint and can easily see how each vertex affects how the mesh moves with the bone.

Because it didn't exist at the time, they're doing finalik and vrchat in the early days was (still is) mostly kitbashed.

They're starting to add their own code now but it's slow going.

VRChat, in a nutshell, is a bog standard unity 5.6 3d game using unity's built in modding system (the streamingassets folder).

Here's how it works:
The game is built using steamVR/OpenVR on unity 5.6 x86/64 windows directx11. There's dx12 support and vulkan support in the game too (currently!) and you can load it up via command line, but assets are not built for that target unless YOU, the UPLOADER also changed your buildsettings to support those targets when you made the package.

They use PUN (photon unity networking) for the network package on 100CCU instances which is why rooms are capped at 64. They also use photon voice.

The visemes is a weakly modified earlier version of Oculus Lipsync for unity.

They use physaudio (but it's kinda broken atm) too.

They use dynamicbone and support it in the client.
They use FinalIK, in particular the VRIK part. They updated it recently.

They wrote a script that automatically pairs the parts called "hands" in the unity humanoid rig to the controllers, and attaches Rootmotions FinalIK VRIK rig to them to move your hands. They also paired the Steam VRCamera object to a pre defined prenamed spot on the avatar (that's the "viewball"). The "head" bone is paired to finalIK VRIK too.

They use the unity humanoid rig settings as a bone proxy so the named targets of the vrik bones are always right.

The sdk looks at some basic parameters of the avatar it's paired to on the scene to make sure the height is correct.

The next thing the sdk does when you go to upload it is basically run a "game" that uses a bilboard for the upload script. The gameobject (your avatar or world) is made a .unitypackage (cont)

That unitypackage then is further compressed on your system with some header information that includes what you named things and your little icon.
That is then uploaded as a .vrca or .vrcw package to Amazon's simple secure storage while simultaneously assigning your player id a database entry that includes the blueprint for the part and the other information you put in as well as the png picture the sdk took of whatever it is you uploaded.
That provides an easy URL reference for the in game scripts on the unity ui panels that you use in the game, and bob's yer uncle.
You get spawned into the environment as an empty prefab with all the scripts you need to attach to your avatar, and the prefab you uploaded is streamed to the streamingassets folder and attached to that gameobject, and the transform of that parent gameobject is the empty that moves you around in space (the standard unity transform). You are also attached to the standard vrchat avatarcontrollertemplate which is basically just a bunch of mixamo animations pulled from xbot and ybot.
There's a few other things they do now as well, but that's pretty much it.
They get a bunch of urls and load prefabs into streamingassets and connect you to each other using PUN.
Any unity game with modding support works the same way.
It's very similar to custom maps in any other game, too.

in short, vrchat is unity networked game 101, the kind of thing you can kitbash through a tutorial on youtube in an afternoon, that they've spent quite a bit of time on since.
When it came out, there wasn't many things that could do VR peroid, and there wasn't good support for the unity tools.
Remember, VRCHAT has been out since 2014 even though wikipedia thinks it was 2017: It used to be oculus and desktop only... and It's gone from unity 4.x to 5.x to 5.6 with many iterations in between.
At one time all it supported was head tracked and a controller, but it was one of the first and that's the point.
They pioneered the use of a lot of this stuff way before anyone else but it's kinda stalled out since then: and since they got popular out of nowhere they're now stuck with millions and millions of assets that they can't just upgrade to the new unity.
I believe they hired a bunch of programmers recently to start improving things but because of the way the "modding engine" works as well as shaders and whatnot between unity 5.6 and 2018 it's something that can't happen overnight and it will likely require a reupload of every single asset in some way or a retooling of every single asset in some way and it's a nearly impossible task unless someone writes a conversion script (which they might be doing).
The honestly better thing to do is release a vrchat v2 as a completely separate program and kitbash all the new stuff in, then copy over the netcode.
People would reupload, it's no big deal.

The special effect animations are nice, has some nice textures in it.

Everything else is kinda meh, but better than nothing and legal. I bought it just because I have been working on basic phone games and figure this eases some of the workload and is better than what I would make. On its own, unless you want to spend hours fucking around with figuring out how to get the animations on the special effects to work, or want specific sounds/things, I'd say its not worth it.
