How is the Samsung Odyssey+? It's available for $300 right now, and I'm tempted to get it as my first headset. I'm only concerned because I think that I'd rather have outside-in tracking, but I also want that high resolution display for my 1080ti to play with. The vive pro is an option but damn that thing looks hideously overpriced.

I notice a can of Pepsi Free sitting on my nightstand. I pick it up. Still cold. I crack it open and smell it, and the fizz tickles my nose. It really smells like soda! I take a sip. Wow. Hmm. Not very good. Maybe it's a low quality render. Or maybe I just don't like Pepsi Free. Still, it's pretty amazing to be tasting something in a feed. This was really worth it.

The doorbell rings somewhere downstairs. Oh, definitely! We're starting. I head towards the door and catch myself in the mirror. I'm supposed to look like a girl named Brooke Shields at 18 years old. Wow, she's pretty. What a render. The eyebrows are a little intense though. I consider toning them down, but I don't want to get caught up in character design. If you change one thing, you end up changing 50 things, and it goes on forever.

It's good for $300. rift/vive/odyssey+ are about at the same level at the moment, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Odyssey+ has the best screen, middle-of-the-line controllers, and the least good controller tracking, since it's tracked by cameras on the headset. For most actual games though, the WMR controller tracking is perfectly fine. It's not going to significantly gimp you. The biggest disadvantage is probably vrchat body language if you spend a lot of time holding your hands behind your back, so if you can call that "affecting gameplay", then there you go.

Better screen and optics than the Vive Pro, and the HMD its self has positional tracking no worse than Vive or Rift. You make sacrifices in the controllers tracking outside of your field of view, but the inertial tracking is good enough that you'll rarely notice any issues with it.
I had a Vive, and still have the wands, and run a hybrid Odyssey+ Vive Pucks setup. I could easily use the Vive wands with my Odyssey, but prefer the WMR wands simply for the better ergonomics

I'd probably feel ok spending quite a bit. Maybe even in the same ballpark as what HTC is shilling their vive pro for. I have the money, it's just that reading about HTC gives me a rotten taste in my mouth from the start. I'm oversimplifying things, but it's like they took their vive headset, slapped on their audio strap, and then just put a higher resolution display inside. It hardly feels like a spectacular breakthrough but the price sure shot up. It doesn't feel good as a customer when they do things like hype up their improved lighthouses and boast about how they're cheaper to manufacture than the old lighthouses, but then they turn around and charge more for them. Yeah there are development costs to recoup, but telling me that they're cheaper to manufacture before handing me the larger price tag feels like they're spitting in my face. Combine that with all of the horror stories about how their customer support is hot garbage, and I really don't want to do business with someone who does that if I can avoid it.

Before doing any research, I just kind of blindly assumed that a VR setup for my PC was gonna cost me about as much as a flagship GPU, so I started setting aside money over time with a target of ~$1000.

If the valve headset is well received, has superior ergonomics and a display comparable to the vive pro/odyssey+, then I probably wouldn't think much about paying $800-$900 for a bundle of the headset, lighthouses, and knuckles.

Feel free to call me a good goy for being parted with my money or an idiot for not understanding the expenses involved. I just feel like HTC is asking for too much for their vive pro starter kit at ~$1100 for the headset and old gen lighthouses/controllers that they had lying about in their warehouses. I'd feel far better parting with a comparable sum of money if I were at least getting newer lighthouses and the improved knuckles controllers.

Hybrid setups have a problem with the two playspaces moving away from each other. It's usually not too bad with pucks, because a few inches displacement doesn't make much difference, but hands not being in the right place would be a lot worse, I think.

I've been using knuckles on rift for testing various things, the drift isn't too awful in that hybrid setup. After adjusting the calibration by around 4ish units on the x-axis, everything matches perfectly.

I can't speak with experience, but from my understanding of how WMR playspace works and seeing people on the hybrid setup, the drift is much worse and often requires a bit of attention. I'd love to experience it myself to verify this though

Start off with desktoppers and work your way up to vr users, anon. Most VR people in pubbie maps are raiding or with a group of guys they know already, while deskpoors are more likely to just be looking for something interesting.

Charm a couple of desktoppers so you have a bit of a following, then do something dumb and funny to shove yourself into the circle you're trying to get into. At that point, you cross your fingers and hope you and your flock get into their conversation. If they're assholes, just bail.

I'm hopeful that I'll enjoy the Odyssey+ a good deal. I think that I will probably be able to live without the lighthouses for awhile if the inside-out tracking is as decent as I've read. Especially since one of my big use cases will probably be trying out Elite: Dangerous in VR.

Alright Anons, its that time again, going to be doing Workshop Wednesday but this time it is going to be on Thursday. The workshops have been going over well, and when anons are working, we manage to get a lot done, inexperienced anons get taught new shit, and others get to just work with a social setting toned down. Koikatsu is still going to be a focus, but just like the last few times, some work till they burnout, so we might need to organize actual breaks or something? Serious Sam Editor was touched a bit last time, but their editor is very confusing and their documentation on how to import stuff is limited or in extremely lengthy tutorials. An idea to fix that is we might have to use a third party watch together program, and get a few to sit down and import their own models to the editor at the same time, heads working together and all that. Something that will be touched on this time around is some lavender support, just going to give it a crack if there is enough time left in the day.

Just finished The Invisible Hours VR. Whew, the writing. Shit was so good. I have some complaints about the controls and other inconveniences, but damn the experience of the story was just so well crafted. And the final reveal (the secret ending beyond the secret ending, which you unlock by holding the radio in the little space beside Vanderberg's room when in chapter 0 exactly at the time that Tesla gets killed) led to some pretty awesome revelations. It's not really a game. It literally calls itself "immersive theater". It's basically like, what if there was this thing that happened, and you're a ghost that can go in and see what happened, and you can control time. So you have a few actors going around, and you can choose to follow any one of them, or do whatever, while the events take place. There's no gameplay and there isn't any goal except for maybe just discovering some secrets and experiencing the story.

You know, I actually feel like VR didn't enhance or was as much an active part of The Invisible Hours as it could've been. The story doesn't really change a lot with VR. It's still more immersive, so I'll take it over playing on flatscreen, but especially since it's passive, there's not much to be done to make it feel like it's something that could only be done in VR. Some things end up being worse because you get less optimal camera perspectives by being stuck with teleport and having the rule of "never move the camera because motion sickness". Like there were a lot of times where I just kind of wanted to see the faces of certain characters more closely but you can't unless you pause and take your time carefully teleporting into exactly the right spot and orientation. I feel like they could've massively improved this by perhaps adding optional character facial view windows that pop up when they're either far away or when their backs are turned to you. It's pretty much identical. Pretty much as in the only difference is that in the back of your mind you know you're alone in your room and wearing a headset and not in your body and all these other things that gives you an ever so slight dissociation with your own actions. This generally makes people more confident because they know they aren't truly there and the threat of consequence isn't there (at least in full) either. Couple this with people wearing avatars that are more often than not better than they are irl but still an extension of themselves (or at least suiting to their personality which is another topic I would love to study in depth) which gives them a confidence boost as well as making others generally more friendly to them. After all, people are generally nicer to more attractive people.
The words are there in real time, the body language is there, even the expressions if they do them right. Only micro-expressions and eye tracking isn't there properly really but vrchat's eye tracking generally does a good job of maintaining eye contact with people and looking at relevant things. It is a really neat thing. Amazing how many people who have social anxiety still have that anxiety in vr when they don't in mmos or other text only chat and how many of them can get through it using vr as like a training ground for socialisation in the real world.
