Is Contractors worth it for 30% off?
First for being lonely
>>253948934
Not unless /vrg/ starts playing again soon. It was pretty dead last time I tried to play.
>>253948934
>>253949136
Yeah, it's dead outside of private games.
>>253948934
If you really like shooty games, it's a different enough feel than pavlov or onward to be unique, might be worth it on that alone. but like >>253949136 says, the servers are dead, so you'll have to bring your own playgroup and deal with the pretty shitty maps and balance.
>>253949776
I like the way it feels, but it definitely needs better maps and gametypes. Gun balance isn't really a problem though.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msbTbfep_sY
I see a lot of potential for this sort of "soft AR" type of game, where you take a scan of the physical space and overlay a completely different environment on top of it, but still keeping the same geometry. You could adapt the existing procedural generation algorithms to work at this scale. Turn your house into a space station, or a cave, or a jungle, or the nepbar.
is the vive deluxe audio strap worth it? does it actually make a difference?

What is it with Americans and comically oversized shorts?

>>253952423
For the life of me I still don't understand how people allow themselves and are capable of getting that fat.
>>253952423
That arena-scale Quest fps demo Oculus had a while back seemed like a fun idea too. It'll be interesting to see places with stuff like this set up.
https://youtu.be/QJXpHp_iQF4
Who /got the Rift S/ here?
I bought Lone Echo, Beat Saber and Robo Recall so far. But the real amazing thing is Google Earth.
>>253953779
You know what I've had my headset for a year and a half and I've still not tried Google Earth despite it getting good opinions. I never really thought it would be anything special. Maybe I'll give it a go
>>253953559
That AR tablet stuff looks cool.
>>253953904
just do it
>>253953904
It's pretty cool if you have done any kind of traveling, I visited the place where I last saw my grandfather before he died
pretty cool
>>253953996
>>253953779
How's the tracking range? Have you noticed any issues or gaps in the camera coverage yet?
>>253954182
>tfw you check out the place where you kissed your exgf for the first time
>tfw you sit down on a street view vr viewpoint and think about life
>>253954273
Works beautifully. I'm coming from PSVR so it is a massive improvement.
The only problem I have is the Oculus client lagging like crazy with Beat Saber when I open the menu.
>>253952423
This fucking changes everything. It makes me want a Quest so bad, and RL friends to play with.
>>253954879

So which headphones should I buy for the Rift S? My PS Gold headset doesn't fit well and the Apple Earbuds drag down.
>>253948974
I don't know loneliness, only detachment.
Does anyone have the tutorial for making an inventory system for props instead of just toggling?
>>253953559
Imagine making a life sized de_dust2 and playing pavlov that way.
>>253955906
You kind of miss the 'virtual' part of VR by doing that though
>>253955906
Just play airsoft at this point
Would love to see vridge for oculus quest, I feel like the quest should be able to handle games like Pavlov or blades and sorcery
>>253956467
I'm quite certain you can easily do this, dev mode supports android sideloading.
Anything that works for gearvr/daydream should work here too.
>>253956171
vr is much, much cooler, with no bullshit scorekeeping and whatnot.
Laser tag is a little closer.
Is there a single player FPS with a story where I fight against human enemies? I can't stand robots, spiders and other crap
>>253956812
H3 has hotdogs in clothing
>>253955164
You're unironically unbearable, Jazkaz. You're an absolute shitter with an average KDR below 1.0 despite hundreds of hours in the game and you get absolutely blown the fuck out by players with a fraction of the play time, yet in the rare instances where you don't do completely terribly you start talking shit. It's embarrassing. No-one thinks you're good. You're like the special needs kid that doesn't even realize he's being laughed at. It's no wonder half of the players have you muted. Learn some humility, you absolute retard.
>>253956560

Yeah, ok, but I can't fire a rpg or tesla cannon in airsoft, flame thrower, or get health packs. I can fire little plastic bbs at people and use the honor system.

yes, airsoft is cool and it's own thing, but vr sports are going to be insanely popular.

Ah I see. I wasnt there and I'm not in "there" to see all the gloating.

Reki's an ideas guy. He's the George Lucas of light novels.
If he had a competent, conspicuously Italian writer heavily editing his novels, SAO would be enjoyable beyond an otaku power fantasy.
Quick! You've been given a studio an experienced lead programmer, an experienced lead game designer and an experienced lead artist and an army of faceless gamedev school graduates.
What VR game do you make?

a shooter of heavy atmosphere/horror, with puzzles, with devs focused on interaction with enviroment. think of 999/other zero escape games, except there's also shooting involved, and you're constantly being distracted with small things like small hand-cranked music box that's lying on the shelf somewhere, or interactive fire extinguisher in the corner, guitar, whatnot. i'd like to focus on interaction to the point where it doesn't even make sense for anything around to be this detailed and see player's reactions. obviously puzzle pieces in the room would be equally, if not more, detailed, and you could get out of the puzzle room in ways that are not all that obvious.
i think attention to useless detail is something that would benefit vr vidya greatly.
>If you take the boss down 1 damage at a time and hit nearly all combo spots, a 98% combo hit rate gives 7-8 million points. The rest is filled in with the enemy score.

I think it'd avoid the issues VR visual novels have by being more interactive.I'd even settle for a VR port of one of the good Telltale games.
>>253963847
Last i checked i was sitting just outside the top 10 so i'm going to make one more attempt farming combo points to see how far i can get up the ranking.
Looking forward to climbing the rankings when the game comes out when they fix the scoring system to not be so stupidly gamed because Beatsaber pp scoreboard climbing just isn't my thing.

Something along the lines of Metal Gear Solid, in essence using stealth and guile to traverse both outdoor and indoor areas. Or just blasting everything in sight.
Less about randomly generated content, and more about setting up a good VR adventure.

You play as rogue for hire in a fantasy world. You're contracted for hits on various targets in varying locales. You can just stab them, of course, but there are other ways involve laying traps such as poison or destroying certain setpieces. With your Gloves of Monkey Grip, you can climb almost any wall and use most weapons. You're also hired to steal things, and need to use creative thinking to clear the way or find a way in, and more importantly, a way out. You can't rip and tear through every person that comes across you; knights are fully armored that your blade can't pierce, so you have to avoid them before they tear you to shreds.

>The scoring algorithm in Beat Saber has been changed! The max hit for notes has been changed from 110 to 115, this means the maximum score possible for all songs has been increased.

Vector 36 is moving to a weekly playtesting schedule: 5 PM EST Wednesdays and 2 AM EST on Sundays.
What is Vector 36? In a nutshell, VR Podracing. You customize a hovercraft and rocket your way into trenches and canyon walls. Plays on gamepad and HOTAS. Customization is a bit funky in VR, but not impossible.
What? I'm not good at it.

The Beat Saber Mod installer in the OP is supposedly getting deprecated soon. There's a new replacement called the Mod Assistant and BeatDrop should still be maintained too. Both should be better options going forward, so whoever makes the next OP should replace the mod installer link with one or both of these.

As far as I know, it's magic.
To be more literal, it's a skilled trade to do it well, and you can't get away with it without using specialized software.

>>253973317
Look up alicevision meshroom, it's a free photogrammetry software package. There are some tutorials on the internet for it. No specialized hardware required, though you do need to take thousands of pictures for a decent result.
>>253974715
While I'm at it, here are the changes for the 1.0 release of Beat Saber:
>Level Editor
>New graphic settings.
>One Saber levels for all OST1 and OST2 songs.
>More realistic lighting.
>Smaller bomb colliders. Bombs also turn off when they are behind you.
>New precise scoring system.
>Tweaked environments.
>Few UI design changes and optimisations.
>Tons of performance optimisations and small bug fixes.
No idea how much the scoring system changed, but I'm hoping the performance optimizations are good.

Is it possible to replace the lenses in cheaper WMR headsets?
I bought a refurbished Acer headset for super cheap and I'm pretty happy with it but there's a couple of really awful blotches on the lenses where it seems like a layer of the plastic was almost melted off or something. I'm trying to think ahead. Vive has a lot of steam support it seems but I don't know what the VR scene will look like in five years, and if Oculus might possibly end up being a better product with more gaems. The Vive seems like less of a hassle overall though. I could be wrong.

It's pretty strange to me. Everyone is quick to point out when they spawn on a weak team, but there's very few who will do anything about it when on the strong team. I can only presume it's a viscous circle of being unwilling to balance the present because no-one did it in the past. Probably seeking popularity through their kill death ratio, too, which won't work because everyone can tell when you don't perform consistently well. I don't like being on an overwhelmingly strong team because steamrolling the enemy team round after round isn't interesting or challenging and you know you're frustrating them.

If you have money to burn, RTX 2080. Otherwise, might as well just getting something cheap and ride things out. It's a terrible generation to buy GPUs, nVidia has us all over the barrel and they're charging too much for their crap that should be at least 30% less expensive.

>>253997170
Have you thought it's not a conspiracy and that the current and potential market for FBT is just super small. so companies don't bother to risk R&D for it.

That's basically the only reason. Decent VR tech is being sold up the river to appease casuals and mobile shitters.
>>253999098
It's obvious that the endgoal of vr companies is to mass produce a wireless inside out tracking system, it massively reduces the entry cost and is really the only thing that'll get non enthusiasts into it.
>>253999098
Inside out tracking has a multitude of uses for AR, which is probably their primary motivation. You guys need to realize that the VR market is so small that selling a few hundred thousand headsets is a rounding error in revenue for them.

Your hobby is starting to be marketed to casuals. They got all the normies hooked in with the YouTubers and twitch streamers and fanatics playing with the expensive immobile ones. Now the marketing has shifted to lower the barrier of entry. Congrats. Normies are killing your hobby. This happens to every hobby.I should know, look at Dungeons and Dragons

you'd have to be an idiot to think this wasn't the goal from the beginning. VR is a product that's been hyped for decades thanks to pop culture.

>>254001027
>Normies are killing your hobby
No, they're keeping it alive. Everything you buy is a product and anything from a HMD to DnD materials are no different. If the creators of said products had no income, said products wouldn't exist. If VR didn't (or doesn't) go mainstream the field will be left to rot again because developers see no profit from it.
>>254002003
Zuck's pretty based desu, before oculus Htc was happy to be overcharging and stifling change for their face bricks, I feel like people give companies like valve too much of a halo
>>254001027
>>254001341
VR is far from reaching its potential currently. The only way it's going to get better is through hard research which is ultimately being funded by the promise of it going big and making them back the money they spent, plus profits. From the very beginning, the entire premise of Oculus was so that we would finally get decent VR, and this is how we're going to be able to get it, in our society. It's entirely necessary for our own desires that we do as much as we can to make VR successful. And if that means we have to sacrifice potential pricier enthusiast options, then we should absolutely choose that route. Overtime, pricy enthusiast options will come out by themselves. And they are in a capacity already, so that's great. We have options.
>>254002159
>>254002282
That's why I can see why oculus is going for wireless inside out tracking standalone headsets, I assume if quest does well, it'd be quite the signal for companies to get into it as well
>>254002205
>>254002242
Eh. I would rather overpay by $1000 than sacrifice visual fidelity and being locked to a walled garden system. Not to mention my reactions, browsing history, voice, maybe even what I look at if they come out with an eye tracking model, being transmitted to fucking Facebook.
>>254002282
>And if that means we have to sacrifice potential pricier enthusiast options, then we should absolutely choose that route.
I mean, Oculus has showed already that the flagship VR products can just stagnate and get arguably worse tracking and people will praise it simply for making it the same price but "newer". The Rift S doesn't even have hardware IPD adjustment. That's huge.
>>254000686
Thank my dude
>>254002681
>being transmitted to Facebook
What does that mean? I feel as if people grossly misunderstand the Facebook privacy issue
And also
>stagnate
If you want to see real stagnation look at the vr market before Facebook started really honing in with oculus, Htc was massively overpricing their product and people hesitated to buy oculus simply because Facebook was behind it. Also keep in mind that Facebook is still taking massive loss from how much they underpriced the rift as well as their current products
How is everyone in VRG doing?
Does facebook store oculus user twerking data?
If I got a lapdance in vrchat do they have a record of it?
>>254002681
>simply for making it the same price but "newer"

>>254002990

> I feel as if people grossly misunderstand the Facebook privacy issue
there is no misunderstanding, facebook hoards personal data that can and is used to identify you in every single way possible and then sells it to whoever pays well
>>254002990
>What does that mean?
Do I trust any company with any of my data? No. But I trust any company that does business with Facebook even less so. My desire to escape my pathetic life outweighs what I think is the risk of sending my data to Valve or HTC. But not Oculuswhich just gives it to Facebook
>Htc was massively overpricing their product and people hesitated to buy oculus simply because Facebook was behind it. Also keep in mind that Facebook is still taking massive loss from how much they underpriced the rift as well as their current products
The Vive is $500, the Rift S is $400. Is a $100 difference really enough to say HTC is overpriced compared to Oculus? If you mean the Vive Pro then yes, it's overpriced. But it was never meant to be a consumer device. Business tiered products are always overpriced compared to their consumer level counterparts.

>>254003848
I was implying higher level positions.

>IPD adjustment
Majority of people don't even know what that is. The PSVR doesn't even have one and it's the most successful headset. The common consumer isn't going to care so much on the technical level. As long as it's easy to set up and the price looks appealing, they'll get it. The Rift S does that well and it's going to have great drops in price.
>>254003247
>The Vive is $500, the Rift S is $400. Is a $100 difference really enough to say HTC is overpriced compared to Oculus? If you mean the Vive Pro then yes, it's overpriced.

Yes, for me and all other enthusiasts, the Vive.

>>254004513
Yeah I know what you mean. It can be pretty annoying at times. But it's fine, that's just how things are. We don't really affect anything by making some post in an anonymous image board. And in the end it will be on them to turn their image around, which I think itself is an incredible incentive for them to get things as right as they can. It certainly is a reason why they've shifted focus to privacy and security more for their current main services, and apparent restructuring of the company. I was kind of curious when they announced that their messenger app was getting end-to-end encryption as well as being uber well optimized. I wonder how that actually turned out.

VRChat helped me a ton. Social life, real life, and skill wise. I wanted to make a game at some point and now I am at the state where I can almost make models from scratch. It is a real skill to obtain and you can make money it. Whoever is angry about people autistically/artistically expressing themselves and having a good time is clearly a boomer. Wake up boomer, anons are having fun in vr, improving their life, and gaining lasting skills and all you are doing is complaining.

But it does.
3D modeling and drawing share a lot of skills and meta-skills like composition, principles of animation, colour theory, learning to plan the stages of your work (a vastly underestimated skill), motivation and discipline, and much more.
In fact, texturing can sometimes literally just BE drawing.

There are lots of games where you can get creative. By your own metric, something like any source game is about 10-50 times better than VRchat, because it has the potential of getting people into Hammer, and making maps is far closer to something actually useful. Character modelling and rigging is an incredibly limited niche.

I'll throw into the bite pile, not for your sake but for others less biased who wonder if VRChat can help them socialize.
Even without facial expressions to help guide social interaction, the human voice carries more than enough information for us to interpret. Things like surprise, anger, sadness and even more nuanced emotions like melancholy and unease can be picked up through the tones of our voices with great impact upon the listeners. In fact, perhaps because of our limited ability to express emotions through faces in VR, people that are training their social ability may even develop a heightened sense of emotional response through other people's voices, allowing them to pay more attention the words of other and the emotions behind them. This is indisputably beneficial for when some shy hermit coming out of their shell to socialize in the real worlld. Facial expression is an important part of human interaction, but voice is even more so.

I'm saying the skill is worthless, and this concept only applies to a tiny fraction of the game's population anyway. The idea that even 10% of the people who play VRchat wind up getting into frankensteining their own models is laughable. Nevermind actually scratch-building stuff.
Most of the custom models you'll see will have been built by people who got into 3D modelling a long time ago, for an entirely different reason. The idea that the 0.0001% chance that the game will inspire you to become a professional 3D modeller is laughable, it's like saying Anime will improve your life because you might wind up learning Japanese and getting a job at Nintendo.

There are absolutely anti-dumping laws where a company can't flood the market with a product so far below price that they aren't making money for the sole purpose of putting competitors out of business almost all countries have them.
But under pricing your hardware platform to sell more so you can recoup the costs with software sales isn't illegal and if it was illegal it would be very easy for the companies who do that to make it look like they aren't doing that with a little financial engineering.

Some random, unordered positives of 3D modelling of characters, excluding use outside of VRChat and learning it as a profession:
Fun. Some enjoy the process itself, some enjoy going from what once was a mere idea in the mind to seeing the finished model, some enjoy getting positive responses from others seeing your model.
It gives you confidence. Confidence that you can create something with your own hands and mind. Confidence itself can then have tremendous downstream effects throughout your entire life.
It teaches you to plan things.
It teaches you to compartmentalize problems.
It teaches you to read the fucking manual, something vast swathes of the population cannot.
It teaches you how to look up solutions to your problems effectively and efficiently.
It teaches you general concepts of aesthetics that are transferrable to many other fields, or simply give you a better sense of fashion.
It allows you to 3D-print things you made.
If you are collaborating, it teaches you to do that and fulfill your role in a pipeline, to have responsibilities and duties to your fellow team members.
When doing deeper research on references, like what the role of this engine, nut, bolt or organ is, or why this surface looks like that, or where this emblem is from, you can learn about all sorts of things.
When seeing the works of people much better than you but understanding a bit about how hard it was to make, you could learn humility. Or you could be inspired to strive for more.
You get a sense of time for how long things take to make.
It could teach you how to work on a timetable/schedule.
It allows you to make sexy anime girls you could fap to.
And more.

>>254014957

Artificial scarcity is letting a product "sell out" only to post more of it later, that has nothing to do with selling at a loss.
Nobody sells at a loss. First because it's illegal in some countries, and because you have to pay for the r&d and marketing. Once you paid for the r&d and marketing, you can start reducing the price or get more money with the same price

Well, can that change someone's life (significantly)? I've never claimed that it alone will with 100% certainty change your entie life, but the chance that it contributes positively is there, and you seem to be denying even that chance.
You also seem to have this weird idea that everyone else thinks that 3D modelling is a magic pill that you can swallow to suddely have everything in your life be awesome. I don't think anybody but you has that idea in mind. Rather, try to think in chances and influences, in compounding effects over time, rather than these sudden and simple causalities. At least, that's what I had in mind. Dunno about the others.
>Then they need to firstly see a mental health professional,
In these cases, yes, but I've given you plenty of other application cases, too. It's also not as much an either-or-question as you seem to want us to believe. What if your mental health professional tells you that you should keep on 3D modelling?
>secondly go outside and talk to actual, real, non mentally ill people, and learn how to be a normal person.
Shouldn't you let that be up to the mental health professionals? And it's, again, not a dichotomy of either being a mentally ill 3D modeller or a healthy non-3D modeller. You could be a healthy 3D modeller, too.

Defending the thread is posting on topic content and playing Virtual Reality . Claiming anGamesything else to be defending the thread is hypocrisy and you're no better than the di/soc/ord flatshitters and habbo drama posters.
If you want the VR gamers like welshanon to ever come back like I do we just gotta stick to playing vrgames, talking about about vrgames, posting content from playing vrgames and organizing vrgames in the thread.

I'm in /vrg/ since March 2018. The gossiping and drama that happens in the thread comes from the people who play VRchat
Alright anons, the cage has grown relatively strong lately, can't even get a free day for Wednesday. The solution here is what normally happens, late night Workshop Wednesday early Thursday. Anons who wish to participate earlier in the day can do so. This shop is going to take place about midnight or possibly earlier and drag on early morning Thursday. lately work and /fit/ has been helping keep up energy, so I working late into the night is possible. Anons in other timezones or ones that are also stuck in the cage cannot usually make it until this time anyway. Easy solution for a simple problem. We just work late. Koikatsu is going to take a break because obviously, gotten a bit tired of grinding it, and serious sam editor is going to be a focus. There will be a game friday night again, hopefully a functional model can be put in at that point. Sorry for posting so late, know many might just be asleep or assume all kinds of things. A local nigmode boat was offering to teach basic map creation, no idea when is going to be on though.
DM Dal if you desire to play VR Games, wish to host them, or want to complain about those playing them.

>3D modeling as a hobby can help people, even if it's only in a marginal way
The thing about marginal improvements is that they can lead to other marginal improvements, and together they can add up.
>But telling mentally ill people they just need to hop on VRchat and model a big tiddy anime girl as their new identity will NOT help them.
Whether it helps depends on the person and mental illness, really. But you're unfairly complicating the example by assuming the person was supposed to model the anime girl as their new identity (which would normally be seen as something negative), and that it's all they'd need to do. Nobody claimed that.
>Fucking around in Unity for like 5 minutes will get you to 90% of VRchat capability.
Maybe, but fucking around in Unity for 5 minutes won't make you an experienced level designer.
Designing levels will do that. Learning how to establish and distribute points of interest, how to design the pathing, when to use negative space - architecture in general, in fact - shape theory, pacing, optimization, minimizing backtracking, prototyping your levels...
Even if VRChat died, if you had made levels for it, you might've gotten some of these skills and be able to transfer them to other games, or even something totally unrelated to videogames.

I still can't fucking decide between the Vive or Oculus. I just want the best choice to play the most games including into posterity. It seems like Oculus has me locked into the Zuckstore and Vive has me locked into Steam. I'm already invested in steam and I don't want to have to start using another service for games. But, if the Oculus can play all the same games as Vive, including more that Vive can't play, maybe I'll want to go that route. Anybody here had both that would give me some advice? I used one for four months and only got worse relative to everyone else. Trying to use ironsights doesn't work because the gun recoils away from its real life position. Scopes are utterly useless so the increased usability of those is worthless. It slows you down doing any other action, even with magnets. Completely forget bolt actions or the pump action. Reattaching the controllers after reloading causes the whole thing to jerk around. The often detach when reacting fast so you've got one free controller and an unwieldy metal bar swinging around the other hand while trying to fire. It's more unwieldy than two free floating points, so you cannot bring the gun around as fast or adjust aim. Gets in the way when not using it, eg: pistols, so you can't crouch without slamming it into the floor and tangles around the cable. Trying to switch to a scavenged rifle from a pistol wastes up to 30 seconds as you try to get the controllers reattached by feel alone.

So, something you should all know about these tests is that they are EXTREMELY system dependant. 60ms monitor adds at least 64+ms, latency of transition in the browser based on javascript speed, mouse input delay as well, and if you're using gpu acceleration in the browser or even if you have other tabs being opened or if you have extensions. Without ehci/xhci handoff or high poll rate your mouse adds another 64ms, and it needs to be the primary mainboard southbridge controller. Usb 2.0 is best for most pure HID input, actually. A 144hz monitor in a single tab of Edge or Mozilla will immediately gain ~100ms.

>not predicting when green light pops up and clicking in advance
this is why you're all a danger on the public roads. being able to predict things is the single most important skill of every experienced road driver
>>254026930
That's a really good point too.
One thing about vr hardware is that it has extremely low photon to input latency, which is why Valve developed their own Wireless transmission protocol instead of using Bluetooth 4+. The dongle for the vive trackers, knuckles and htc controllers uses steam's proprietary transmission protocol where a single adapter is paired to a single device.
in some cases, the input latency is as fast or faster than transmission over a cable, it's pretty amazing.
>>254026338
If you have a numerically higher reaction time, you can't win without an advantage. Reaction time is also correlated strongly with IQ, so you're less likely to even be able to create an advantage. In a meaningful test, lower reaction time will result in being massively more successful.
>>254027063
what the fuck, this is not /o/ thread. i was sure i'm on /o/ for some reason
>>254026930
>>254027137
This is also why it took so long for some of their hardware to come to market, they had to apply to IC and The FCC to get the 2.4ghz protocol approved, since it has to live with other protocols but not interfere with them, and not be an established standard because they wanted the least latency.
Valve's wireless protocol is actually very impressive and really unique.
So what's my point?
taking an action in vr should happen much faster than most consumer mice can do.
Only something purpose built like a 1000hz esports mouse like the zowie fk1 comes anywhere near as close, and only if you know the right ports and bios settings to get it right.
You can further improve your system's vr input latency by disabling HPET.

Oh, also, to cap this off, if you DO use a headset that uses bluetooth to communicate with it's controllers and whatnot, make sure you have a CLASS 1 bluetooth 4.1+ or better adapter and make sure it's line of sight with the headset.
A nano adapter will be BLE or class 2 or worse, and you'll lose features that only class 1 can handle due to the packet speed required.
Windows mixed reality controllers, if your headset doesn't have an adapter built in, will not use IMU based tracking at all if your adapter sucks.
Same thing goes if windows 10 tries to replace the driver in the thing, if if does that, you might lose some of the device specific anti-latency they put into the driver revision for the bluetooth adapter.
at the very least be sure to disable usb power down in your device manager.
This might also apply to the rift S, and probably will apply to the vive cosmos in the future since I don't think they'll be using valve's communication protocol.

the thing is it needs to be a big panel to make it easly warpable to a persons FOV. the DPI is killer but it needs to be scaled up to make it usable in a VR headset.
>>254029196
the small panel moves along with where you are looking via foveated rendering, and there's a low res panel behind it.
>>254029281
that could honestly work but how do you mount this and how do you move it without blocking light.
When the IK update happened all my fbt models were fucked and I had to change my height from 180cm to 150cm for them to work again. Anyone else?

>>254029442
this could be related to hip placement.
Your local IK is still calculated locally for you. If you're looking at yourself in the mirror, functionally nothing has changed.
You now BROADCAST your IK position to Vrchat's servers and everyone else viewing you which is why it can get a little odd or desynced when you're dropping packets.
However, the performance gains on local machine from not having to calculate IK for everyone else is fucking HUGE.
>>254029506
Not at all, it's godlike clear. Where you are focusing is only between 9 and 90 arcseconds. Everything in your peripheral vision is so blurry you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between 1920x1080 and 800x600, honest to god.
Even rows of 1cm leds roughly in the correct colour on the edges of your vision will trick your brain into thinking you have 200deg fov.
This is why foveated rendering is so important, and I'm really sad it's not being pushed more.
This technique even works on flat monitors if you have eye tracking. You can supersample smaller areas to prevent render load and downsample everything you're not looking at in realtime.
>>254029281
it would all be mechanical inside the headset. The low res panel is usually made to be slightly see through. Think of it as mechanical foveated rendering, but the main difference is what you are looking at is BROUGHT PHYSICALLY CLOSER to your eyes, so you get the full true depth of field.
Varijo had a fixed centerpoint prototype and it was incredible. Honestly I just think they need to stack a bunch of these side by side with a little diffuser to catch the edge of the screen. 4096x4096 in 2insq would be high enough res for everyone, just need to figure out fov. That's where foveated rendering would come in again. even without mechanical movement, as long as the sweet spot was clear as fuck it would be a good 1.5 upgrade.
I bet we'll see the panels hp is using in an upgraded version of the index and other headset s soon though.
>>254026972
I am also interested in this. Looks like any two handed weapon is going to see issues since the tracking fucks up when a controller is in front of another. That said, I haven't played VR (I'm here to see which headset to get) so I don't know if that's actually a problem in those games.

Human FOV is a really interesting thing. Horizontal field of view is just as important as vertical fov, but obviously horizontal is more important for headsets since people are used to wearing hats and looking out windshields.
Only the thing you're focusing on is truly clear, everything else could be extremely low resolution and we wouldn't notice.
Virtual reality screens, lenses and headsets are a bunch of compromises. You can give a huge FOV without distortion, but the headset would have to be fucking LONG to get the correct distance from your eyes to prevent SDE and make the image clear. So, we use lenses, which unfortunately either distort the image or introduce different wavelengths of light to split like in a prism. (tbc)
is Vive tracking/headset quality really worth it over the Rift with two cameras? I'm slowly but surely building up my determination to upgrade and i'm leaning towards the Rift (Touch being a better controller, bundle being overall cheaper), but Vive technological autism impresses me.
>>254030372
Vives are extremely cheaply made and you have to deal with chink tech support when something inevitably goes wrong because HTC is chinkshit. Wait for the Index or buy a Rift (not a fucking rift s)
>>254030175
I've often said that the ultimate HMD would have curved screens rather than lenses, it could be thinner too, or, instead, go with a larger screen and use a NEGATIVE diopter lens instead of a positive one, to compress the pixels and remove sde.
The one thing missing from hmds right now is convergence and accommodation, meaning things closer to you than the point in which your eyes start to drift towards the center of your nose is going to be a bit blurry.
The larger stereo overlap really matters.

Don't listen to this guy. Vive pro is a great headset but believe it or not the Rift S has a way huger sweet spot than the rift CV1 and is overall a way better headset.
if you have the money get a valve index, the tracking is great if you want FBT, but don't fall for the rift cv1 meme. The rift S is better in almost every single way except maybe the headstrap. The resolution is better, the sde is better, the sweet spot is better, there's less wires and the screens are much lower persistence rgb LCD with tighter pixel packing.
The rift S is a GREAT headset for the money.

don't get anything other than a rift s, index, vive pro, hp reverb, htc cosmos, or pimax with sword sense, or you'll regret it.
OG vive and CV1 are not worth it and use over 4 years old screen and lens technology. They are the Atari 2600's of headsets.
Even a windows mixed reality headset like the samsung od+ is a better choice for 300$usd.
Even a 150$ acer windows mixed reality headset is a better choice at the moment than a og vive or rift.
WAIT or get a rift S. I promise you, the rift S IS an improvement over the cv1 in all the ways that matter.
>>254031018
unless you can get a htc vive and base stations and wands and the DAS for like 300usd, don't do it.
With the gearVR lens mod the OG vive is still pretty great, and it does work very well with steamVR, but at full price it's not even remotely worth it, just get a windows mixed reality headset or rift S as a stopgap.

I already own a nigger-rigged wmr-tier solution (unless i underestimate WMR, but the base idea of screwing around for hours because your tracking is sub optimal and your input is not fully compatible is here), i want something better. I don't care much about pixels and overall quality and whatnot, i just finally want to have a basic vr bundle that works out of the box without major issues. Popularity is hugely important in this case, that's why CV1 sounds great.
>$300
i can get used rift cv1 with touch controllers and two cameras for roughly this much. it's appealing because
>rift s costs $500
>vive is almost $700 new
>and roughly $450 used

Well, thanks for advices, i'd look into it.
>>254032146
tracking on the headset itself is exactly perfect and actually better than the vive for headset only tracking.
Input on controllers for all steamVR titles is NATIVE openvr and works absolutely perfectly. In fact, WMR has trackpads AND sticks, making the controllers one of the better solutions out there. There is special dialogs in the steamVR tutorial for them.
As for controller tracking only, that's the ONLY sore spot in WMR, and it's not as bad as people think. There IS a dead spot behind your head if the controllers are NOT in motion, since the IMU plus cameras provides sensorfusion for the system. If your bluetooth adapter is bargain bin tier, you'll get slightly worse tracking than if it was good. The cone is something like 190-280 degree around the front of your body for PERFECT tracking, but if you hold a controller out of view of the camera, you'll only get perfect 3dof tracking (this always works) and no 6dof tracking because the controllers are not in motion and the cameras can't see the light points on them. It works incredibly good, honestly. Way better than people think.
>I don't care much about pixels and overall quality and whatnot
Yes you do. Fucking YES you do. You don't know it yet, but you do. Lenses and native resolution are the most important part of a headset by far and away.
>unless i underestimate WMR,
You massively do. Microsoft worked with Valve to make their headsets native to SteamVR. There is a program that abstracts the input library.
Windows Mixed Reality headsets are every bit as much SteamVR headsets as the Vive is.
>a basic vr bundle that works out of the box without major issues.
Literally every single VR game on steamVR works on windows mixed reality.
Every single Oculus game works on windows mixed reality with revive.
WMR headsets are the only headsets with access to windows mixed reality home, which has a few things like Halo that you can't get on steam OR oculus.
they're good. HP reverb and Samsung od+.
>>254032146
You're definitely underestimating WMR. I don't usually have any issues other than the camera coverage for controller tracking. The CV1 is definitely going to have better controllers and tracking though.
>>254032146
oh and one last thing, even the first gen WMR headsets have higher resolution screens than the first gen rift and vive. (1400x1400+)
Not only that, they're synced refresh 90/75/65hz adaptive screens that comes with their own version of Spacewarp that rivals Oculus ASW and Valve's ASR. They are VERY high performance in comparison and the system is built right into windows, so the cpu usage on WMR is better than EVERY OTHER HEADSET. They use AVX extensions on the processor to improve the performance and it really shows. My WMR headsets gets better frames than my vive does with almost 3.0x supersampling, less gpu load and less cpu load. it's a really underappreciated feature.
>>254032859
only better tracking on the controllers, and only if you have 3 cameras to prevent occlusion. The headset tracking on WMR is arguably better than rift in many ways. For Sims, WMR wins hands down. Some versions of the headsets have better lenses too, and all the screens are better, especially the OD, OD+ and HP reverb and acer OJO 500, but I don't think any of you have used the OJO.

Just read that this game's movement is "node-based," with predetermined points you select. Your character physically walks to the point you select, and you're still able to fire your weapons while moving, so it's not that big of a deal. For PSVR I honestly prefer that, since it feels so awkward using the controllers' face buttons to move around. Sony should've made new Move controllers with thumbsticks and included them with every PSVR; sell at a loss to keep the price low. Anyway, I'm excited to play this game next week. Hope it's nearly as good as Astro Bot for being an expansion of a tech demo

The only game I can remember that uses both at the same time is Doom VFR. Most games just emulate Vive controllers by default, so you'll have to remap controls to even be able to use the sticks.
>There IS a dead spot behind your head if the controllers are NOT in motion
Also anything above eye level.

There were a few exceptions and some games that have issues because of the tracking. All of the popular stuff works fine though.

I've heard the sweet spot is smaller than the Rift or Vive, and the screens (colors/black levels) are supposedly worse too. I haven't used anything but WMR for comparison though. It's not terrible, but it's worth mentioning.

If you have the computer to drive VR, and you have:
200$: Refurb windows mixed reality with controllers, acer, lenovo, etc.
300$: samsung odyssey, odyssey+ on sale
400$: RiftS, hands down
500$: Rift S
600$ MAYBE HP reverb if you plan on doing sims/elite dangerous/racing more than room scale vr, but tracking is still ok on HP for room scale, best screens so far besides index.
650$: Acer Concept D OJO.
-----
700$ Vive Pro if you can find it at that price and you can't wait, you need it now.
MAYBE pimax 5k+ if you already have controllers and lighthouse. (they're on amazon now)
700$+? Valve Index all day every day. Nothing else is worth it.
You're independently wealthy? StarVR One, combined with knuckles controllers, maybe. You probably still want an index.

i've listed my prices specifically for this reason. My price list is accurate for what's available for me in my location. I'm sure you can get it cheaper somewhere, but from my point of view, prices are as i listed them. And WMRs are hard to get here, so i still kinda feel like going for CV1.
I'm checking out those WMR things now. I'm not entirely convinced, but it might change with more googling around. I don't want to have limited head-position-related controller tracking, i already have bad tracking and i don't want to switch from compromise to another compromise. But controllers themselves look great indeed, no chance i'll have any mapping issues with this many buttons/analogs/touchpads/other input.
>>254037503
don't forget that HTC still needs to drop the other shoe on "Vive Reality System" "Vive Lens" and what they're doing with viveport infinity.
The cosmos will be a mobile+openvr headset with 360, inside out tracking, and some new lens system and high resolution low persistence screens. As far as I can tell it's designed to compete with the rift S directly and probably made alongside qualcomm.
I know the VRChat dev teams know about this stuff, they're probably working on it in the back end.
How do I get a valve index early without paying for it?

>>254037143
Stocks are nice, but it's true that they're kind of bad in Pavlov, especially if you plan on using bolt action. Also with some weapons you have to compensate a lot for recoil by moving front controller down, might be harder to do when a stock restricts your movement and moves the other controller with it. Good luck anon.
>>254037851
I actually think it goes further than that.
Check out this marketing render of vive "Lens" and note the battery indicator.
I think the Cosmos will be a direct competitor for the Rift S AND the oculus quest, except it will be cheaper and use your own phone and it's likely better processor to do it. They want their own "oculus store" (and they already have it with viveport subscriptions) but it's also an OpenVR headset, we know that much.
I have a strong feeling it's going to kick some ass, they were just waiting for Oculus to drop their load so they can BTFO them at christmas.
If it has ANY FBT solution it will be a great headset.
Right now HTC has a monopoly at that and they have a controlling interest in vrchat.
>>254038187

>>254037979
Odyssey should be taken out since the Odyssey+ is there.
Vive is better at $500 if you care about FBT and having an easier upgrade path for Index and future SteamVR stuff.
OJO has no official release date or price yet, and will have the same drawbacks as Reverb, but with hardware IPD adjustment.
Seems pretty subjective to me.
>>254038691
I can do something similar with touch controllers due to how the shape of them fits together. I'd be reluctant to use that because of the delay of slotting the controller in. The other grip I use is resting the back controller on the inner elbow of the other arm.
>>254038464
The vive wands were valve's design attempt to optimize for lack of occlusion to lighthouse. They're literally a steam controller cut in half in some ways, and they wanted some form of hand presence to eliminate buttons for muh immersion. Yes, we now realize they're not as good as a stick but they were designing in a vacuum at the time.
So yes, they could have iterated on the controllers but at least they gave us vive trackers and supported the steam ecosystem while valve has slow rolled to their headset.
HTC HAS been working on some major things behind closed doors (they bought VRChat for one) as they pivot from cell phones to VR primarily, plus they had to come up with their own way to move forward since valve is becoming their competitor. They also released viveport infinity, which, honestly, is probably a pretty good solution for the rest of the world (china/india/taiwan/etc) that doesn't/Can't use SteamVR directly. A subscription to access all the top games isn't such a bad idea, we just want all our games to be on steam.
They are hard in corporate too, as this shot of "vive sync" shows.
Those avatars look really familiar.

>>254039293
Welcome to vr my friend!
The vive trackers are way overpriced, but yes, the tech is cool. Rumor has it valve will be releasing something like a vive tracker soon, and so will HTC with the cosmos.
Their primary use is VRchat, and since HTC owns 50% of vrchat, they will continue to produce them, and they also work for LIV mixed reality client if you're a streamer and want to track an object in vr that isn't yourself.
Very, very few games use FBT, Blade and Sorcery may have an update soon, there's a silly dancing game, a game about kittens, and this MLB partnership (pic attached), High Fidelity, VirtualCast, Sansar, but that's mostly it.
if you're super technical you can become a V-Tuber with them, that's how Kizuna Ai and AI Angel work.
they're 99% used for full body tracking in social VR applications at the moment. Right now VRChat's networked IK makes them very, very janky.

There's a Beat Saber FBT mod that works with the custom avatar mod, but that's really just for recording/streaming.
I want to try making a simple game that uses them, but I'm waiting on my Index before I buy pucks.
>>254039669
Climbey uses them, Thrill of the Fight, Natural Locomotion and some other strange little games like Island356.
They're cool, but if you don't play VRChat or do mocap, they're a waste of money right now.
>>254039571
they realized it needed to be updated. They sold a bunch to VR amusement parks and they're working on a "concept d" version with better screens and lenses now.
I saw a prototype at a cyberpunk art show in japan this year, some kind of partnership with "WaveXR". which is a really cool social music app that allows live DJing.
Pic related, it's an acer OJO in disguise that the artist modified, but the first version.

It's so great to see new people here looking for VR information from the most objectively neutral group of vr peeps. Welcome. VR really is starting to take off, wow.
We're brutal on hardware.
That being said, the Rift S is pretty good. Better screens and lenses than most Windows Mixed Reality headsets with the same headband as a PSVR (pretty good) since lenovo licenced the design.
It deals with the occlusion issue really well, and it will work just fine with shooters. >>254026972
this is not an issue. The cameras see in 3d, so as long as they can see one or two of the light pips on the controllers they'll track perfectly. This is literally a non-issue.
My brother and his friend both ran out and got a rift S, they both just bought new pcs, and they're LOVING it.
They have used my vive, WMR and rift, and they say the Rift S not only looks better but runs better too.
Plus setup is nicer with a single plug.
It's a decent all around headset.
Just disable usb power saving and you're good to go, there seems to be a single issue with that. Be sure to use oculus home beta and the beta of steam+steamVR and you'll be just fine.
It's a very solid headset for 400$. You will have zero issues playing any games.
I have yet to see anyone complain about controller occlusion in anything, including echo arena.
The controllers use 3 dof and accelerometers in addition to camera based tracking. You will not have any issues with the tracking of the headset.
Clearly Facebook is focused more on the Quest, but the rift S is the only headset I can reasonably recommend at this time at that price point.
