I'm having some VRC avatar troubles. I'm attempting to have an emote with music. At this point, I've boiled it down to simply having a sphere attached to my avatar's wrist with an audio source component on it, just to be sure that there's the audio source itself is the culprit.
Any idea what I might be doing wrong? I can hear it just fine in-editor.

Depends on what you want out of it as well as the quality of the Used system you can find.
A large room is far better for the Vive since the Rift sensors don't really reach that far and thus you'd need more as well as then sacrificing more USB slots for those sensors.
On the other hand Rift has, currently out of the box, the best controllers at this time so playing games generally feels better.

If you think you'll upgrade to an index or knuckles controllers sometime, a used vive will come with base stations that are forward compatible. The rift CV1 is probably the better system, and the controllers will likely have a lot longer life than used vive dildos. Either one is fine though, so just check what the used market is.

Yea it's not at all. It really is VR F-zero GX and the higher speeds and bot difficulty of redout is similar to it.
You need to strafe around corners, control your speeds when cornering and even hard brake on hair pins, control your pitch on jumps, loops and crests and at higher racing levels you need to not hit walls and have an actual racing line to keep up with the ai.
Some of the tighter smaller maps also require some pretty intense track memorisation because they have no barriers and you just go straight off.
It's got a high skill ceiling.

I think my right Touch thumbstick input is busted, is there any definitive way to check? It has zero issues with turning and such but for press-down functions like the Kick in B&S it just doesn't register at all. It doesn't look damaged as far as I can tell but my Beat Saber grip puts decent pressure on it so that might have caused an issue.

i remember publics losing all appeal but returning to them regularly has really changed things as far as finding joy in vrchat still, takes some getting used to. Especially if you spent the last year and a half locked away in friends+/private worlds, i do have to say the meme NPC avatars are very accurate when it comes to the lack of creativity in them, however there are still gems that linger around,and you wind up eventually finding a good time. Also pretty happy with adding whomever without any kind of worry of intrusion when it comes to friends+ instances. Even if its really this community that has this sort of practice.

The weirdest thing are the people who block or mute you when you've had no interaction with them. It's very unsatisfying since there's no way to know what it's about.

Knee jerk reaction is matching up the mute or block but that hardly resolves anything. What can you do? If they're chatting with my friends I just join the circle and either stand and talk over them (blocked) or make people talk with me (muted) to make them feel awkward about it.

So what's the deal with quest avatars on vrchat?
the "recommendation" for polycount for user created ones is 5k, but there's actually no limit and the avatar profiler still lists "good" for under 30k poly. I can see single draw calls and a single atlased material (while still allowing emissives, mip, bump, spec, etc, which is nice) and htat being super important on the snapdragon 835, but it seems vrchat's profiler doesn't actually care about polycount on quest nor does it differ from the pc version? Shouldn't a 20k poly quest publish be marked as "poor" or at least "medium"???

The only hard stop in the build and publish button is shaders, as far as I can see, where you need to use mobile ones or vrchat's provided mobile shaders. Everything else is manageable or not important like dynamicbone.

I somewhat disagree, lots of entertaining public character stuff still happens, depending where you are and what time of the day. Euros and Aussies tend to be pretty awesome shitlords for that stuff.

As for the long term use, Legit comedians like Drumsy use the platform to great effect, the singers/musicians like TFMJonny and spacesuitcat can be fun to hang out with, it's not all people just hanging out and drinking 7 days a week. This I think will actually wane as better headsets come out. Right now, people drink a lot in vr to enhance immersion because being a little tipsy makes you basically completely ignore the limitations of gen1 hardware.
The HP Reverb and Valve index are like putting on glasses for the first time when you're legally blind, or drinking 5 cups of coffee. The immersion is REAL. People report that they go through first timer effects again with the index, and I think that'll change the kinds of things people do in vrchat, especially once hand tracking and finger tracking and FBT becomes more common.

Dancers are entertaining to watch (I suppose this is somewhat normie shit) and there's always a large demand for anime and chill obviously.
Even simple stuff like what Beezelboop and Lolathon do will always be entertaining to blast unsuspecting pubs and raiding pubs with something weird will always be fun. Even if you can't do audio you can pipe something into your mic and animations still work on Quest.
The true endgame is making neat worlds and sharing them.
I wouldn't consider RP groups normie shit and there's entire clans of people doing incredibly detailed versions of what is effectively isekai quartet in vrchat.
You could also do a first person DnD campaign if you wanted very simply.
There is also a large demand on the canny for an adult space on vrchat.
