Good morning, everyone. I'm conceptualizing a local multiplayer VR game, just for fun. I have plenty of VR dev experience, but I've never tried doing local multiplayer before. I'm at a bit of a conceptual roadblock, though:
See, I'd like to try to do a fantasy RPG style experience where you do quests as a 2-4 person party. I'm running into some issues coming up with how the party should travel together.

How does movement in VR work when there are multiple people sharing a play-area? Does one person decide where everyone goes? Do I make it tile-based and everyone has to agree on which way to go? Help me out here!

Alright anons, going to repost this to whatever thread survives the autism, but a minor hiccup has happened. Summer bugs are going around and I am down with the sickness. That in mind, with plenty of rest for tomorrow Workshop should be able to go on regardless of the deadass energy levels. Going without a direction in shop has been pretty good, but one complaint that has been heard is anons who are new to blender cannot get help due to anons who are experienced and working on their own thing. The messages of /vrg/ are complicated, anons want one thing but they also want another thing, some want structure, some are fine with the loose "anybody can chill in shop". A solution for this problem that meets both ways would be a lesson of some kind. Going to reach out to anons who are familiar with things and wish to hold a lesson to try and get a weekly lessontime going. Simple things like weight painting, doing anything with shapekeys at all, and other basic things that take lots of tinkering and fucking around to figure out. Don't know how that is going to be structured, but the last time a lesson was announced anons did show up expecting it. Formal lessons could fit in with the choatic studytime environment, hopefully.

I think you'd have to paper over it with gameplay, either a time crisis-style "waves happen here, then you all move in some third-person cinematic, then more waves", or the sort of "tactical" short-range teleports that robo recall has. Some pseudo-story or setting reason for it, like your teleporter magical girl only has a short blink range.

I can't really think of a good way to keep the magic of roomscale local multiplayer (you're all standing around corresponding to physical distances) while allowing free movement. I can vaguely think of something like having a stick free movement per player where, if you use it, your virtual character in everybody's else's pov greys out or turns into a ghost, and vice versa (you only see ghosts of them, until the party "resyncs", i.e. comes back into the same physical space. Just feels messy though even trying to explain it.

Skyrim VR is legit good if you want to experience being a manlet archer and mage. Most mods work as well. Still bad Melee experience.

VR Dungeon knight is early access tier but is most fun with friends.

Swords of Gargantua or Blade and Sorcery is better than Dungeon knight BUT Dungeon knight has an actual DUNGEON.

If you want to scratch that dungeon itch though, go with JOURNEY OF THE GODS.

vrchat is very addictive because the freshness and variety of content is never ending, and the immersive nature of positional audio combined with body language in a group social experience is extremely compelling for most people. It has 8000 active users a day and for lack of a better term is an MMORPG or at least an MMO since there's full on games inside the platform.
People stick to vrchat after 5pm most days after they play other vrgames or while they'4e waiting for "their game" to come out. I usually play a few rounds of something then unwind in vrchat or Bigscreen, since nothing beats watching stuff with friends on a 100 foot private screen. Plus I have the bandwidth to stream 4k to them.
Don't forget that headset resolution isn't as important as you think it is, in the real world a 4k 55inch screen at more than 8 feet away will have the same visual fidelity as a 1080p screen at 15 feet away.
The resolution of gen1 headsets is more like wearing sunglasses or looking through the screen window in a tent, there just some tiny gaps that your brain basically ignores after a while. The lens sharpness and pixel packing is much more important once you exceed 1440x1700. Refresh rate above 90 is important too.
Since the image you're seeing is 3d, it's hard to exactly explain "fidelity".

A vive pro is too expensive for what you get, since the specs of the Samsung OD+ are better.
Only get a vive pro or index if you REALLY, REALLY need knuckles controllers or really, really want full body tracking.

screen door effect, basically because the screens are magnified (for both bigger fov and stereoscopic effect focusing at 6ft) you can see "between" the pixele, especially on non-rgb stripe Oled.

there's six main things that change fidelity of a screen in vr:

Barrel distortion, how much you need to distort the image for the lens intrinsics

Chromatic aberration, the tendency for light to "prism" when it's in a lens splitting red green and blue, so the image placed behind the lens is pre-distorted so they recombine better.

Persistence, aka pixel "ghosting", you want as little of this as possible so your images don't SMEAR, this leads to motion sickness for some people a bit and also makes things look blurry. So far the Index is the only one besides the rift S that is focused on this aspect. (that's why the rift s runs at 75 and 80, less persistence is the same as:

Refresh rate (this is an obvious one, but the biggest performance killer)
"God rays", which is bright spots doing lensing effects bouncing off fresnel lenses

pixel density, ie, how close each rgb part of a pixel is to each pixel. (and their layout) headsets like the samsung odyssey + put a diffuser between to reduce this effect. This removes "screen door effect"

and finally Resolution, of course. However, resolution is WAY less important than pixel density, because you can just change the magnification of the lens to have the same effect. Right now the HP reverb and the Pimax have the highest of the reasonably priced commercial headsets, but don't let that be your deciding factor. Pixel density is way more important and resolution + refresh rate is what makes VR demanding.

I imagine the valve index will actually be less demanding than most other headsets while still looking way better.

The XTAL has a similar trick too, but it'll be a while before we see a consumer version.

I would love the pimax sword sense controllers to be cross compat too.
