Just updated to No Man's Sky Beyond. Update fucked my controls to default and I can't figure out where to rebind them on Steam. Can't remap in-game, all the controls are blank and unresponsive. Anyone else have this issue?

No Man's Sky in VR is fun, but there's definitely a need for optimization. I had stuttering frames and slight UI hiccups all over the gaff.

Well I'm not sure what I expected but it's pretty fucking garbage. Flying is alright and the ship internals look really good but collecting materials is boring and constant. Fun with friends didn't even save it. VR implementation isn't actually that bad considering it's not built for it. VTOL VR is a better flight sim and uses basically the same controls and Township Tale has better crafting and resource gathering. Base building isn't much to speak of either.

They have different problems. NMS's VR interface is clunky, but at least the gameplay loop and procedural generation is all there. TST has a really nice VR interface (toolbelt, can actually grab stuff with your hands), but there's not a lot to do, and the performance is garbage.

Having performance issues in NMS, like stuttering in particular? Try this.
Go to \SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\Binaries\SETTINGS and open both TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS files in notepad. Find "NumHighThreads" and "NumLowThreads" in both. Based on the number of cores your CPU has, give high a bigger number than low. I have a 6 core cpu, so I gave high 4 and low 2 and my stuttering has gone away completely.

I really enjoy the control scheme for NMS but it overall needs some tweaks and decent index support. When it wants me to point at my hands to bring up a menu or grab some plants (fucking love the pulling-to-activate shit) I'd prefer if I could generally point at it and not point with the top of my hand like I've got a laser on my wrist. Then add some stabilization to the menus anchored to your hands since trying to perform actions on tiny squares while both my hands are just being held up is annoying. It could use some better graphical options (I forgot to check but it feels like it was displaying on the HMD and my desktop monitors). Also no height adjustment as far as I could see. I feel like I'm standing on my knees sometimes. Might just be that I've been around unusually large plants and steep slopes though.

But it is definitely playable. A little rough, but not bad. Moving around and interacting with things feels good.

Many of the old CS maps have very limited points of entry and heavily favor the defender. That's why they got removed or heavily edited in later versions.

Aztec is probably the only maps from CS beta that's almost identical to what it was when first released. I think they only edited some of the crate placements.

Nuke is very similar to beta version too except for some of the roof stuff and B site vents and tunnel entrances.

My first objective was to investigate some robot on a fucking RADIATED planet with intense radiation storms, aggressive fauna and plants and sentinels. First, all of this is being done from their experimental fixes branch: To play in Experimental, right-click on No Man’s Sky from the Steam library page and select “Properties”. Among the available tabs will be the “BETAS” tab. Enter “3xperimental” in the textbox and press “CHECK CODE”, and it'll let you in, then select it from the dropdown menu.

Do the following and the game should look better than ever, and you'll get 90+hz and stay out of re-projection 99% of the time. The steps are similar to the early days of FO:4.

in nvidia and amd gpu control panels, force off Vsync, turn on "prefer maximum performance". Set "vr precomputed frames" to application controlled instead of 1, which is the default for nvidia. For newer games this setting does nothing, but I can confirm this game DOES listen to this (like it does/did in fo4) and it breaks re-projection. In windows, I recommend only having one monitor active especially if they have different refresh rates and/or resolutions, make sure it's set to it's maximum refresh rate. I also recommend maxing your fans so your video card doesn't go into a lower boosted state and flap between them.

This gives less overhead for re-projection, and decreases input delay, but YMMV. It's part of the reason that most people don't see 100% gpu usage, truth be told the game is gimping itself to your display's framerate cap, not the hmd for any post processing done on the desktop view before being sent to you.

go into the games Video settings. Switch the game to fullscreen (it won't do anything, but might as well), and start reducing the resolution. By default the game is rendering at your desktop resolution you are forcing a very high SS without knowing it... Get it just under or just over your HMD resolution. It does seem like the resolution is per-eye, even though it should be full-field. The vives per-eye resolution is 1080x1200, but you can't select that resolution so just set it close to that (or higher if you want SS on top of your SS in steamvr. 1080p is fine for me.

under graphics, turn off all antialiasing and anisitropy since it's calculated from the -desktop resolution- (unless you're going beyond it for double SS, and even then, it looks better off imho. You can leave everything else on ultra at this point except maybe shadows I've found, with most GPUS, even like a rx480 8gb because Vulkan is awesome.

Honestly everything would be better if it were made to our exact shapes and sizes. That's just how clothing and a lot of other wearable stuff goes. Have you ever tried a custom in-ear monitor that's molded to your ears? So much more comfortable than a generic pair with silicone tips. In the future this won't be too big of a problem anymore for VR HMDs as FOV and optics become so big that the placement stops mattering. Comfort might still benefit but I already see that as a solved problem if you're willing to do an easy mod or two.

So I bought Dirt Rally 2.0 since they finally pushed the VR update.

This is seriously the worst game I've ever tried to play in VR. Don't even think about buying it if you're gonna play it just for VR. It won't work.

It makes Dirt Rally 1 played through Revive look like the gold standard for VR games and performance, and I promise you it was far from it.

Let's start with how the game boots. In VR it places a 2D screen far away in the other corner of my playspace, that I can't really turn towards with my controller plugged in. No option to reset the view either. (Can't reset the view with the CTRL key anywhere like in DR1.) If you have OpenVR Advanced Settings installed, not even that allows you to move. (How the fuck did they hack that?) Then you're prompted to enter your name and profile details, but upon selecting any of the fields, it doesn't read any of my keyboard inputs for some reason, nor my controller any more, so that's a soft lock and had to restart the game within the first minute of booting it.

Try #2. Skip customizing my profile, just go straight to the racing. (All the menus are flat 2D screens by the way, that can't be moved either, right up until the very second you start racing. Worse than DR1 even.) Now there's finally an option to reset the view in the pause menu... but it does nothing. It maybe moves me a few inches closer, but doesn't rotate me nor am I still remotely near the driver's head view point. Okay, l'll just try awkwardly driving from the back seat to see if that works?

Not really. The frame rate is unstable and stuttering on an RTX 2080 with a 3700X at Medium settings (no not even High or Ultra). So I try setting my graphics to the bare minimum, but that only helps marginally and the SteamVR frame time graph indicates it's still mostly GPU-bound by some miracle, with significant CPU stutters now and then.

Fine, I'll try play with motion smoothing on? On the lowest settings? From the back seat? Sitting at a weird angle in my chair? And for whatever reason my head view lags behind the actual motion of my head as well (this is new, wasn't in DR1 either)? Yeah, nah. I give up.
